hey hey was just wondering if the free spirit tensioners are actually worth the money?
ive got an 06 xb12r and according to buell it is good for a life time warranty on the belt but according to others thats-a-load-of-crap and i should get one to keep my bike happy

can anyone who has used them let me know if there is any other benefit to having it or even if its necessary ?

EDIT was going to ask about drummer exhausts but realised i had put them in the title already - am very confused about the models available - some are twin exit some are single - do they all give the same dyno results?

cheers
AKS

there are no twin tip drummers available.

http://www.kdfab.com/

there is a regular drummer, a drummer SS, and a drummer CF available for your bike. i have had both the regular and the SS, both work VERY well.

You mean this little gadget? : )

That is actually a picture of my old one that broke in half while riding home from work on day. I have one of their new black anodized ones on the bike now.

I love it and haven't had a problem with my belt yet. I have ~28K on my bike with ~23K using the Free Spirits belt tensioner. Mine came from Trojan Horse, one of our sponsors.

I have to explain about the one that broke. I was riding home from work and noticed my bike "felt" funny. I pulled over and the tensioner wheel was missing, well half of it was missing. I backtracked and ended up finding it the next day. So I sent an email to Trojan so they could let Free Spirits know what happened. I tried to contact Free Spirits before sending the email to Trojan but their Contact Us link was bad on their website. I wasn't looking for anything, I just wanted to pass on the info. I had the part on my bike for well over a year and I bought it from a friend of mine that went with a chain conversion so he didn't need it. Well much to my surprise Trojan Horse replaced it for free as this was the first time they or Free Spirits had ever heard of such a thing happening. Trojan and Free Spirits back their products 100%.

So since I was getting a new tensioner for free I decided to order some low profile scoops and an air filter from Trojan as well. Gotta support our sponsors you know. : )

Thanks again Matt @ Trojan Horse!

I'd like to see some proof of that.

I am YET to hear of someone that owns one of these to break a belt.

i have used trojan horse a few times in the past and they are simply brilliant : )

just curious but would a belt without a tensioner still be working just fine after 28K?
im thinking this is maybe a "just in case" little gadget rather than something that will help my bike travel smoother / faster/ last longer...

There were a lot of problems with belts during the early years of the XB line
Hence the number of revisions to the belt since the release of the XB line.

That problem seems to have gone away in the last few years, either that or folks stopped bitching about it. lol

I think the best application for the tension would be a Ulysses that does some moderate off roading. It allows for some slack should you bet a twig or stone stuck in the belt allowing it to pass without puncturing the belt. Just my .02.

I have almost 30k on my original stock belt on my 05 XB9SX... Stock idler pulley.

Of course, I have a spare belt hanging on the garage wall where my wife can find it and bring it if I were to call... so that no doubt has caused the belt biting gremlins to go bother a less prepared Buell owner ; )

I like mine! Never had a single problem.

I personally think it is better on the belt then the stock idler. Some will argue that, but in MY head an adjustable tensioner makes the best since.

Plus Trojan is AWESOME to deal with!

I say get it! I screwed my belt up on accident when I first did my 04+ belt conversion and it's still rolling just fine. I'm pretty sure the tensioner is what's saving it.

The reason for all or most of the belt breakage was yes the belts were not is tough but it was also a fact that customers and techs alike were installing and removing wheels without consulting the manual on how to handle the belt correctly. My 04 still has the original belt. Yes it doesn't have the mileage that some of you have but it has been on off on off multiple times and its going on 6 years old to boot. Like I said that belt tensioner is cool to look at but doesn't work any better. Proof you want??? The XB has been around for awhile. Some would say for how much longer?? What I can say is... They have updated belt a few times but they still haven't hung springs on the belt tensioner yet. I wonder why???

Give em a little more time. It took 5 years to correct the firebolt headlights and 6 years to realize that they were wrong about the right hand scoop.

They're slow learners.

The right side scoop is garbage. If you actually look at the pictures its more than just a scoop, and its design is significantly different than the after market RSS's that have been around for a few years.

And it wasn't 5 years for the headlights, it took only a few months once they figured out the issue.

Bads I hear ya and what I'm saying is that they DID break with the stock one but there is no record of one breaking with the Free Spirits unit.

Trust me I am not nice to my belt when removing my rear rim. I don't take any special precautions and am yet to have a problem.

I'm not trying to start an argument and am only stating what I know. I'll put it to you this way, it can't hurt. Right?

Actually if you do a search, you'll find approximately 60-70 threads pertaining to the XBR headlight problem and they date all the way back to 2003.

So in all fairness, maybe it took them 5 years to "figure it out" before devising a solution.

Show me one dating back to 03 or even 04?? Sorry I've been here longer then that. They figured nothing out. The compant does what it has to and it did. It doesn't happen over night. Nor do you know what your talking about as far as the scoop. Have you seen one personally?? I have and can also say its design was for air and fuel in its design.

here a headlight thread from 04 and I thought I remember one that was earlier that this one. Don't feel like looking too much, non-issue now.

You are right Damnut. But it wasn't probably recognized till 05 or 06. Then it takes time to issue a recall. Like I said it doesn't happen over night.

Just put one on at 8,000 m.
Black color not available.
My XB is easier to push around after installing FS tensioner.
No change to vibration at hard decel/braking (that I suspected was belt related).
