So, with my new "Hercules" translucid airbox cover, you could barely see the filter inside my '07 inner airbox (Hercules is way darker than Kick Ash). So, I snatched the '07 inner box out and took a scroll saw to my old '06 air box. The filter shows up nicely now, but WOW does it sound different! At 3k rpms, there's this incredibly loud "BRRAAAAAAAAAP!" that kicks in. It's awesome!  ~SM | ||

LOL! "Angry Chewbacca"! That's hilarious! I had no idea the inner airbox blocked so much noise. I wonder if THAT'S the real reason for the inner airbox, because it would be a LOT simpler for Buell to just rig up a sealed outer cover if water was the only issue. ~SM | ||

I did this last weekend and found that my exhaust is way too loud to hear any intake noise. | ||

I have a chopped airbox, and a stock exhaust. I'll bet ya I'm the only one that hears Chewbacca when my bike goes by.  I think the airbox is louder than my exhaust! I'll have the put-put problem cured soon! | ||

I opened the front end of my airbox recently and it does sound nice, even with the stock exhaust, when I want to make noise, I just press the momentary switch above my starter button and the intake noise is more than matched by the exhaust(the interactive valve opens on demand)  | ||

What kind of negatives are there to removing that inner airbox? In the pics it looks like you guys just totally took that inner cover out. Any problems with rain or anything else gettin stuck in their? | ||

Elliott, with the airbox opened up, then engine has access to more air, or the engine isn't having to suck as hard to get it. Under most circumstances, the computer can compensate for this by enriching the fuel mixture. However, there is the possibility of running lean. Since I've done this to mine, I have developed a flat spot in my throttle response from a dead stop. Just as I start to take off, the engine wants to lug and hop a bit. I need to do some data logging to see exactly where I need to adjust my fuel map, and by how much. ~SM | ||

Firebolt32 The original top has been cut into it's current form. Neoprene washers and wingnuts keep the top locked down. I used the original holes in the bottom of the airbox (where the breather tubes used to be) and drilled two directly above. I used REALLY LONG bolts, which is what you see sticking out. I thought about trimming them down, but, the airbox clears them with plenty of room to spare. so, I left them as is.  I have a newer lid (with the grill in the front). The sucking noise (or 'honk' as the SV boys like to call it) is more noticeable post open conversion. BUT, I don't hear it much over my drummer. I only hear it around 3,000-3,400 rpms.. if I am cruising in that range. All out acceleration through the gears, and I don't notice it at all (because the drummer trumps the honk!). | ||

Good article. Perhaps I should point out that I chopped my airbox STRICTLY for cosmetic reasons. I wasn't looking for any more power. Now, thanks to my vanity, I need to re-tune my bike.  ~SM | ||

OK, looking at this last pic, it's easy to see that all the hot air from the rear head will travel up and under the airbox cover and get sucked in, when the bike is idling at a traffic light. The IAT sensor will pick up the temperature and lean out the mixture. Then you go to take off and you get a nice pop the first time you twist the throttle and sometimes a little pre-ignition until the wind cools down the airbox. Has any of you guys ever monitored your IAT before and after the chopped airbox? I bet you'er in for a surprise | ||

This is a little off topic, but still related... Anyone know where to get a nice rubber grommet, or grommet strip that can be used after cutting the airbox cover to clean up the hole? I've looked at NAPA, Advance, Lowes and the like, but can't find what I'm looking for anywhere. Any ideas? | ||

Miko, not sure why there would be a difference in temps when idling. Even with the inner box intact, it still has to pull air from the outermost box. ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on June 11, 2009) | ||

I'm talking about trim for the holes cut in the outer airbox cover to allow "ram air" into the filter box. Just as shown in buellinachinashop's profile and what zatco is talking about.(can't tell if you have trim in there tho?) |
