I hit the 10k and have some questions/concerns for those who do their own wrenching. 1. First off, dealer wants $720 for 10k, nothing new there, so I'll take care of what I can myself. I will need to get the fork oil replaced, dealer wants $300, Does this sound high to you? 2. Has anyone had any problems with the warranty after doing the 10k yourself. Let's say my clutch cable snaps, HD didn't do the 10k, which means that they don't know if it was lubed at 10k or not, will Buell warranty cover situations like this? Does the service on my bike go into the computer for any dealer to look up? 3. As far as my clutch adjustment, my clutch has never ever engaged until the lever is nearly completely out, I would love for it to engage at half travel without having a bunch of freeplay in my lever, can I achieve this or is everyone's like this? Does a little extra turn on the adjustment screw affect this at all? 4. My bike runs good, but could always run better, is it worth it to have the timing checked, I'm guessing that this is a quick hook up to the computer, I hope? 5. Besides the brakes, steering, and suspension are there any other pertinent areas to check for loosened bolts? Anything else to look out for? I enjoy life and want to stay safe  Thanks | ||

Does a little extra turn on the adjustment screw affect this at all? The manual should have detailed instructions on properly adjusting the clutch. Once it's adjusted to the manual specs I would suggest only using the adjustment on the cable to tailor clutch feel to your own preferences and just leave the adjustment inside the derby cover alone. (that's just what I would do - there may be other ideas and methods out there) 4. My bike runs good, but could always run better, is it worth it to have the timing checked, I'm guessing that this is a quick hook up to the computer, I hope? You should be able to hook up EcmSpy to check the timing. If your bike is the same basic idea as my X1 (and I believe it would be, since it's not '08 or newer) Then you just take the timing plug out of the right side of the engine (at the bottom of the cylinders) Then rotate the engine until you see the timing mark(s) The tuning guide has good instructions on what to look for when adjusting your timing, but I know that you're looking at the signal from the cam position sensor and comparing it with the physical location of the timing mark on the crank. I've found that pulling the spark plugs, putting the tranny in 5th gear, and turning the rear tire by hand is the easiest way to get the engine rotated to the exact position you need it. Hope this helps, and if you don't have the service manual yet then that's the FIRST tool you should buy before starting any maintenance. Even spending $50-$60 on a new one is worth it since you'll get to save on those $700 regular maintenance intervals that the dealer used to perform for you. | ||

the problem with the fork oil replacement is that you need a special tool to remove the spring tension to undo the attaching hardware. this can be had aftermarket for about 150. then it still takes all day to remove the forks, dissassemble, clean, fill, reassemble and reinstall. if there is a sportbike suspension shop or guy near you i would remove the forks and bring them to him along with my service manual and let them do that part and then do the reinstall myself. me, i bought the tools and did it myself, changed fork seals too. next is the high tech shim stacks. i want the drop in cartridges but at 1400 bucks i need to get faster first. good luck, tim | ||

To heck with 300, the other dealer 5 miles to the west of me wants 180 for fork oil, 400 for the whole 10k service. Said fork oil will only take 2 hrs, can someone confirm this? Why such a huge difference in price? The dealers are literally 12 miles apart! | ||

i believe you can buy the a new set of blacked out forks for the same price as the fork maint fee. food for thought. | ||
