On the way to work this morning (0445) through a lousy section of town, the officer who sits in the convenience store lot came after me.

"Morning, officer."

"Do you know why I stopped you?"

"Actually, no, sir."

"You have a headlight out."

I hope u pulled the trick of pulling the bright switch while looking over ur fairing and saying it's not out. Then letting it go when u sit back down. The cop I did that to took 3 times of me doing it before I started laughing. He wasn't laughing. But he did let me go after he checked to see if I was legal. That took 15 minutes of my time. It was worth it.

Honestly- this guy was fishing for a DUI prospect.

Keeping it in perspective...

If they want to pull me over to harass me just because I'm on a "crotch-rocket" I'm gonna give them as much shait back as possible. Of course, I'm 28 with a clean record and I'm legal to ride (license, insurance) If they wanna waste my time, I'm gonna get some fun out of it!

I love how some say "Cops are smart" and other sarcastic comments grouping all COPS together then complain when they get grouped in the "Crotch Rocket" group. some of you do not realize COPS are human also and do make mistakes. You want to be given leway but critsize COPS and do not give them leway.

and you proable guessed it I am in law. Sheriff not a COP but close. and if you still think Sheriff's are cops, go look up where the term came from.

see i messed up, check my spelling

Same token goes for the riders who run from them and speed everywhere. They give all sportbike riders a black eye.

And I learned that trick at a black-n-chrome bike night(Harleys) I had some guy come up to me all drunk telling me my light was out. I had him for a few minutes while I checked fuses. Pull the spare fuse, checked it. Put it back in. Asked if it was better. He says no. Looked myself and it was working. Go figure it was. Repeat. Fun times.

When I was taking my Motorcycle test at DMV the lady administering it said I couldn’t take the test because one of my bike’s headlights wasn’t working. If I could repair it quickly, she could put me at the end of the line and I could run to the auto parts store for a replacement, and hopefully fix it before it was my turn.

I just flipped the switch…

Many of the area LEOs do look at sportbikes with a jaundiced eye (a form of profiling if you will). Last year a state trooper was killed when he tried to pursue a speeding sportbike. The young man was found and eventually convicted of manslaughter. When I ride I keep in mind that I am going to be looked at more closely than, for example, that mini-van tailgating me.

I'm actually surprised I haven't been stopped on my way to work before. I do know where the officers like to park so I watch my speed and rpms at those spots. It must have been particularly slow and the officer was very young.

The comment most made about my bike is that I have a headlight out. I thought it was a hoot to be stopped and told that by the police. Anyway, I showed him the low/high beam difference and he told me to ride safely. He didn't check the paperwork at all.

I had one of the 1st XB9Rs and got chased down one evening by the Broward Sheriff's department after leaving a bike event because I had a headlight out. Then came a 15 minute vehicle inspection and ID check. Shortly thereafter I was stopped by the Volusia Sheriff's department for the thing. Deputy "I stopped you because you have a headlight out." Me, not wanting to do the 15 minute hassle again said "Before we go any further, may I ask you one question?" Deputy "OK." Me "Under Florida law, how many headlights are motorcycles required to have?" Deputy stands there pondering the question, and I just mount up and ride off. He never came after me. Deputy ""

Thats why they are cops not doctors or lawyers. Also most of them are fat and out of shape and if they didnt have a radio couldnt catch a turtle in a foot race.

Cops, sheriffs, highway patrol, deputy, officer its all the same just different titles with slightly different jobs.

Just in case anyone is unclear on the subject: "I pulled you over because your _________ light is out." or "I pulled you over for failing to signal."

Has been pulled over because the popo officer is looking for something else such as DUI, drugs, suspended license, etc. This has been confirmed more than once directly by LEO friends.

I just got pulled over this morning on my way to the gym. I was at a red light and seen the cop looking at me. Light turns green I go and look in the mirror to see if he is coming. Sure enough flashing blues. So I pull over and he gets out and says "where is your inspection sticker". I pointed to the forks, he saw the sticker, said it was white and blended in, apologized and went on his way. No license or registration question. Anyway, he was just doing his job.
To say the police are dumb is as stupid as it gets. There are stupid people in all walks of life. For the most part they are pretty intelligent. Just because they don't know about Buell headlights. Except for Buellers who does. I think the headlight set up is stupid anyway.
+1 for the police, firefighters, soldiers, and medical personel!!!!!

I was stopped by a female officer several years ago for my headlight being out. I flashed the passing light at her, and explained that the law requires 1 headlight on motorcycles. She gave me some cop attitude and I went on my way.

BTW, Cops LOVE when you explain laws to them.

Oh yeah, it's called "fishing" among other terms. Drive through Daytona Beach Shores if you wanna try it.
Everyone who reads this thread should go to the ACLU site to watch their clips on what to do or not, when being encountered by the Police. They are NOT your friend.
Remember, when seconds count, cops are only minutes away.

Hey, aren't all cops dumb because they don't memorize the operations manual of every make and model of vehicle (car, motorcycle, truck, RV, trike, etc) that has ever been made.

And who the hell do cops think they are for notifying a rider of a potential safety defect which the HURT Study determined that a front end collision being the #1 cause of motorcycle fatalities with the #1 excuse being that the driver never saw the motorcycle.

Hey, on second thought, maybe you're right - maybe that cop should have kept his mouth shut...

It's no wonder we have the Congress in office we have today with the comments I've seen on this thread. I have heard it said that government is but a reflection of the public.

That is funny but only because we know and they don't. Had the cop been on this, I could see calling him a . I assume he was not so I think "ignorant" would be the correct term.

Dont like the police, next time carry your own weapon instead.

I'm sure we've all had our bad experiences with the police. I'll say this, I'm very lucky to not have gotten some of the tickets I very well have deserved in my life. Reported then stopped for triple digits, attempted eluding (very hard for him to prove, he wanted to though), passing on double yellows (comeon bikes are far from incapable in a lot of these areas), general hooliganism, all let off by being polite and honest.

I've dealt with a couple bad apples, but for the most part, the good ones have left a longer lasting impression than the bad. I've worked with cops who worked 2nd jobs n such, outside of uniform they are usually great people.

Then there are the ones that just seem to want to abuse the power, I report these assholes all the time, I'ld like to think it helps, most likely not though.

Number one thing, you don't have to admit to anything, you can try to defend yourself in court. I've found it easier most of the time to answer with yes/no sir/mam, not talk shit and usually fess up to what I've done depending on how deep o doo doo I'll get in by admitting something, if I know I'm getting cuffed n stuffed my mouth will stay shut. If caught red handed, man up, attempt to take your lumps, they usually appreciate it and let you off(the good ones that is), if a cop comes up on me with attitude, I won't say a damn thing and make his job as hard as possible.

I have lots of LEO friends, and NONE of them are dumb. As a matter of fact, when you need them the most, the officer standing in the back of the crowd, being quiet, not saying a word, and no facial expression, is likely to be the one that kicks the most ass. Who would you want to show up first? A rookie, or that guy? They are people too, and a little respect goes a long way with them. Remember, when the situation is out of your control, they are the ones that take on the bad guy. I donate annually to my county police force, and try to meet as many of them personally as possible. Even if that means stopping at the local gas station, and having a cup of coffee with them. If you're afraid of them, what are you doing wrong?

I respect the police, but for me lately, the bad experiences are starting to out weigh the good.

Last week, a friend I work with, was heading home from work on his gixxer, he was approaching a red light in the right lane of 2 lanes, a dump truck was sitting in the left lane, light turns green and as he starts to go past the truck, the truck cuts him off by making a right turn from the left lane, my friend slammed the brakes and went in front of the truck to avoid going under, where there just so happened to be a mini van sitting at the light of the intersecting street. He went into the side of the van, over the hood and hit the telephone pole directly behind the van, upside down and IN THE AIR!

The cop, who didn't see the accident, wrote him a ticket, as they were putting him in the abulance, for following too closely, WTF!! How do you follow a stopped dump truck too closely?

This was also a day after another friend told me about his girlfriend going over the hood of a car on her bicycle, when a guy did a hit and run on her. Not one cop showed up, the paramedics called the police while in the ambulance to get someone to come to the hospital for a police report, not one cop showed up!

Like I said, I respect the police, but the bad is outweighing the good.

Sorry, I have a lot of anger built up inside, and this seemed like the place to vent.

I agree with Srwitt, there are a lot of cops who are really great people, but there are also the ones that abuse power. I've ran into many of these peckers while I lived in Detroit, I am glad I moved.
