All,

The simplest and saffest way to check max speed is with any of a number of Garmin GPS devices. Most come with a trip computer which records max speed for a trip. Mine was $200. They are useful tuning tools, accurated to about 0.3%. My K1200RS read 147mph at end of measured mile.

I have never exceeded the posted speed limit on my XB9R

How about the unposted absent limit?

Motorcycle Consumer News reported a top speed of 138 mph on the XB12S. i am breaking mine in gently, have gotten 110 in 4th gear. i am pretty sure that with the race kit installed all the XB's 9 or 12 will rev limit top gear.

I've only had mine to about 105mph, but on the last dyno run I had them run it to the limiter in 5th. According to the dyno, the bike is capable of ~133mph.

Indicated 120+ on a road once with probably another 1000RPMs left to burn. I've hit the limiter on the drag strip but never really paid too much attention there beyond looking at the slip.

The bike will easily hit the rev limiter with me on it, but then I weigh ~150lbs with full leather gear on and can get completely behind that tiny little windscreen!

Indicated 86 mph.

That's what the officer said.

I don't usually even look at the speedo.

Not to rain on the parade here but I really hope the majority of you are doing these runs on a closed race course - above 100 and two things can happen faster than you can imagine.

You get nabbed by the cops and lose license, bike, job in some cases (if you need to drive to get there or do it), etc.

You get outta control - rider judgement, obstacle, and/or mechanical failure and you go down - above 100 on an open road your chances of survival - nevermind major injury are less than 50%

Ride carefully guys.

oh yeah BTW...135 mph....out in the country. It didn't really take that long to get there.

so as far as danger no more than riding 35 mph in the city if you ask me . actually probably alot less dangerous actually

It may just be more dangerous to go the speed limit here in Atlanta, you'd get run over for trying a stunt like that!

Glitch that is like driving here in Phoenix. The posted limit is 65, traffic does 80 regularly. When you hit the open stretches between towns the posted limit is 75 with traffic cruising at 85-90. You come up on a Semi cruising at 85-90 the last place you want to be is behind it, so you crack the throttle and start around him. Flat on the tank, wind induced wobbles from the truck and the next thing you know you quick glance at the gauges right in front of your face and the needle is crawling up to the soft limiter with the speedo just crawling past 135. You shoot out past the front of the truck, the wind wobbles vanish, the bike settles down and feels rock solid you leave it pinned to make plenty sure you have the road clearance, feel it hit the soft limit, glance at the clock and its just past the 140 mark, pop up and roll the throttle back, quick glance to be certain your clear and some car didn't follow you past the truck, change lanes and drop back down to 90 and cruise...

Yep, that's the way it is here, 'cept ya got 6 or 8 lanes all goin' th' same direction. That why I take the back most all the time.

Just runnin through the gears gets me to 100 in no time, and in places that would probably get me thrown in jail. Don't know about top speed, one time I looked down at 125 and I kept going up, but I didnt look back down. Those speeds tend to create double vision.

132 mph according to the speedo. I weigh 180lbs minus riding gear. At my age I said I was not going to do stuff like that, but damn it was fun.

Nice one Bub.

Tell you what though, I've always wanted the tube Lightnings to break 150. Yes I've said it before, often, the XB is a step backward in top speed performance compared to the tubers, or most anything else come to it.

Kaudette or anyone else can claim speeds in excess of 120 or even less are purely academic but I can assure you, in the UK they are not. Many of us Brit's are addicted to high speed. High speed here shifts bikes off the showroom floor.

I can't help but wonder how fabulous an XB12S would be if it could reach with ease 150mph or more. That to me is a true measure of how an XB will perform at much lower speeds despite what the engineers here claim otherwise. Torque is a fabulous thing but only for so long, right up until it runs out of revs.

There's another problem too Bubba, this is a virtual world, wouldn't you prefer I lose my fingers?

According to the GPS: 54.7
...and it'll have to stay like that for the next 400 miles.
