I know this is the XB board and I do own a 07 XB9R its just this board is waaaaaaaay more helpful than the others in my opinion so here we go. I just found a 05 Blast that has 198 miles on it and has been sitting for years. The tank inside is rusted however it only appears to be surface rust. The battery is dead and who knows what other surprises this thing holds for me but the main question for now at least is this,

DO I need to buy another tank or is there some chemicals I can pour into the tank to clean it out or is there someone that knows of another way to clean the tank w/o buying a new one?

Also, any other advise on how to get this thing running. Its a 2005 Blast that's never been registered and has 198 miles on it. Much Thanks Guys

I have put sand in my gas tanks when I was younger to clean out the metal gas tanks in the freebee bikes that I have gotten. Just used some sand and just shook it around like crazy to clean the inside. I had a friend at a paint shop who put it in a paint shaker with some ingenutity. I would try to take a peek in the cylinder as well to verify there is no rust. It may be easier to get a new tank though. Just my .02 cents.

Isn't the tank plastic...I know it's under a plastic cover, but isn't the tank itself plastic too? I swear mine is, but it's been a year or so since I've had the cover off...maybe I'm losing it...

There are a couple of products that are made specifically to take care of rusty motorcycle gas tanks.

One is called Kreme. It's been around forever. It cleans then coats the inside of the tank.

Do some searching and you'll find a couple of products to help you.

Ive used like ball bearings, just put them in and give it a good long shake with some alcohol or something, then apply the kreme suff per directions. Works out very well.

check the valves and valve seats also. do this by hand. i purchased a rebel 250 a few years ago that was 3 yrs old had 83 miles on the clock. cleaned the tank, carb, checked it out started up and dropped a valve into a cylinder. i was not happy. after talking w/ my repair guy, he said, i should have turned over the engine by hand. lesson learned

Um,
no it isn't
the outer cover and the tank it's self is plastic. If there is rust in the tank it fell in there.

Just remove and rinse...

Unless you are talking about the oil tank. If so it will be fine...

I was wondering about this thread. Didn't think Buell made any bike with a steel tank in over a decade.

Sort of like rust-proofing a Corvette's body panels...

The tank on my Blast is all plastic...you either have some funky fuel deposits or somebody put some rust in it...

But it is possible for a Blast tank to go "bad"....I know of one where the plastic delaminated, forming a "bubble" inside the tank...the symptom was....the tank would only hold a gallon or so of gas...wierd huh??

More likely the tank was left with gas in it and it evaporated leaving a brown film inside the tank.

Not Buell related but does anybody know where I can get a radiator for a '73 Superbeetle?

No?

How out a set of piston rings for an '87 RX-7?

i saw a diagram at one point which showed how to electricly remove rust from inside a rusted tank. it said it was reversing the natural rusting process. i have no idea where to find it again, but i do know there is a scientific way of doing this, not just shaking some foreign object in your tank for an afternoon and hoping you got it all. if you need to spend money to rebuild a motor, it is worth it to buy new tanks to ensure your not putting crap into it.

Take a look at por15 as well. I used it on my 73 Yami and it worked very well but a bit time consuming.

Rust usually gets inside clean, full fuel tanks by someone dumping in gas from an old, rusty gas can. I worked at a rental center and we had that problem all the time when clients topped of tanks before they brought their machine back from cans that hadn't been used in years.
