I just bought a set of frame pucks for my XB12Ss. When putting them on i first wiped down the frame where they were to be applied, unstuck the backing from the puck, and then pressed the puck onto the frame. Unfortunately neither of the two puck stuck very well. I called a dealer and the mechanic said they should just stick right on. Is there a trick or a heat resistant glue that anyone knows of that can solve my slightly embarrassing problem? | ||

Weird ... Should stick right on. Little tube of primer wipes the surface first (it's a clear liquid) Any chance that you used any liquid-type metal polish or cleaner that had any silicone in it? Silicone makes bonding impossible if there is the smallest trace of a residue left behind. | ||

I don't believe that there was any primer in either of the boxes. Just the pucks and paper for insulation. I just cleaned the frame off as best as I could and stuck them on. If indeed the frame wasn't cleaned off well enough am I kind of out of luck and need to buy a new set or is there a type of glue that anyone might know of that may work? Thanks. | ||

3M makes a HIGH STICK film adhesive (peel-and-stick stuff) known as VHB. Don't know if it's available over the counter. We use loads of the stuff but buy it in 100 foot rolls. You could google-search (3M VHB) to see if you can find a local source of cut pieces of the stuff. | ||

If they didn't come with the primer, I'd make the dealer take them back. It's their fault for not supplying you with the necessary tools to do the job. | ||

3M Products Check the 4910 - it is just the adhesive on a peel-off backing. THink of it like "Scotch Tape" that you can peel off the backing again. No foam (you don't need it) Not sure where you can get small pieces. Not sure about other adhesives that will remain flexible and stay attached at all temperatures and in the occasional fuel splash. Don't know why you weren't given the little tubes of primer with the pucks...? | ||

Thanks Slaughter. I'm investigating that tape right now. I'm kicking myself because when I picked them up at the dealer I should've asked the dealer how the pucks go on but it seemed like a pretty straight forward thing so I didn't ask. | ||

To add to that, when I called the dealer they never mentioned anything about the primer. They just asked "did you clean it real good with anything?" | ||

This is what I've used for years. If you go by a body shop supply store they should have it. If you know somebody that works in a body shop, they should have some. 3M Scotch Mount (with red backing). I bought some frame pucks a while back that I have been waiting for warmer weather to install, but they did not come with any primer either. I was thinking about just buying some automotive primer/cleaner for similar applications. | ||

+1 Andy. This should come with the pucks. I was standing at the parts counter some time last year when a guy picked his up. Boe (the parts guy) opened them up and they each had the primer with them. | ||

Court -There wasn't any primer with the pucks. I went back and checked again to make sure it just wasn't lost in the packaging, but there was no primer. -I'm not sure if there was supposed to be any in it. All I got was a tiny print out receipt, not a full inventory type receipt you would get with the purchase of some products. | ||

Easy fix. SEND me your contact info and your dealers contact and the part number of the puck kit and we can get you fixed up prontoliciously. | ||

ps. the primer, if I remember correctly, is in two 1/4" diameter by 3" long cardboard tubes, in which you crack an inner glass container, and apply from one end of each tube like a felt tip marker. They say 3M on them, and they look industrial. | ||

Yup, the pucks are supposed to come with two primer tubes about 1/4" x 3" | ||

Ditto on having primer. It's pretty heavy duty stuff, whatever it is... wherever you wipe it, it actually changes the surface of the frame paint, makes it look darker. I put a little too much on in one spot and it ran.  ~SM | ||

Don't forget to follow the instructions and test fit them dry first,and then use a pencil to draw an outline of the pucks on the frame. If you are not aligned properly, not enough surface contact area from puck to frame can result in poor adhesion. RTFM | ||

My frame pucks did not come with any primer either. Are there any alternative adhesion primers that can be used that are available at an auto parts store or something similar? | ||

Jeremiah: You've uncovered a bit of a glitch in the parts system. You bought "A puck", as opposed to the "Puck Kit". The "kit" comes with the i-sheet (instructions) and primer/adhesive, the individual puck does not. There are two routes to go:

I just took a closer look at my instructions and it says the kit includes, left and right puck. Under step 1 of frame puck installation it says " Using Isopropyl alcohol, clean the frame for the new puck. Wait a minimum of 5 minutes for the alcohol to evaporate." Do you guys think I should just install as these directions say or is there no doubt that I need the primer? There are 3 numbers on the heading of the instructions sheet. -JO3190.
