I know many bikers.. love loud exhaust.

I'm not a biker..I'm a motorcyclist and trying to keep people friendly with motorcycles. Doing my part you know. That and I don't have anything against my neighbors.

I can't imagine any way to quiet a bike. If the stock exhaust isn't quiet.. not likely to find one that is, especially with the buell's configuration. But maybe someone has a suggestion. I like my xb. But I'd rather not have to cut my engine on the way into/out of my subdivision; let my neighbors sleep.

You can keep your flames to yourself. Loud pipes risk rights.. as the AMA is fond of saying.

You should try a drummer! I asked the same question a few months ago.

I will say my loud pipe kept a dog from walking out in front of me, so it has its benefits, but I to am concerned about waking up my neighbors.

Are you saying you think the stock XB exhaust is too loud? I don't think you'll find a quieter exhaust anywhere. Ride it easy when you're trying to be quiet, and I can't imagine you'd cause any problems.

If your neighbors are offended by that meager volume level, you need to move.

In the morning, I push my bike to the street and start it there. That way, any noise is directed down the street and not echoing off my neighbours houses.

That's the best I can do for now. I've had no complaints.

Over the winter, I'm considering the xopti mods. That seems to produce a quieter and richer tone but maybe it won't be.

+1

As long as you short shift your XB, it is very quiet. Sometimes you don't realize it while riding.

If possible have someone ride your bike slowly up and down the block and listen for yourself.

Yea it seams louder on the bike then when the bike rides by you. The other thing is it produces low frequency which will travel further, but is not nearly as annoying as high frequency

I bet your neighbors cant hear your bike.

I know there are folks in your neighborhood with louder exhausts on their trucks.

I am with you Zeroman. I much prefer quiet bikes and it really p#$%@ me off when some clown rockets down my street with his straight pipes. My Buell, Triumph, and HD(s) all have stock exhaust and while I know I am giving up some performance I feel it is a fair trade off.

My experience with the two Buells I've owned is that the bike sounds a lot louder when you're sitting on it, than it does to the people you ride by (assuming you've left the exhaust stock). Could be a non-issue.

If your neighbors complain, buy a leaf blower and tidy up your yard every Sunday morning...

I bet you could find an straight truck muffler that could be welded on, though you'd lose your exhaust servo. I had a 1967 Dodge Power Wagon with a 318 in it, and put a set of "Turbo" mufflers on it (dunno the brand). That thing was so quiet you couldn't hear it idle if it was more than 15 feet away. The tires literally made more noise than the exhaust, even at 10 mph.

I had a neighbor complain about a friends bike with VH pipes. Then A few Sundays later he started working on his 2 stroke dirt bike. He won't complain again. And I don't think the Buell is any louder than all the trucks and SUVs with the flowmasters. I leave for work at 3a.m. and get no com, plaints about MY bike.

Best way to deal with neighbors: talk to them before there is a problem.

Are you running the stock exhaust? They are very quit. When I go to my friends house, he knows I'm there because he hears the Uly fan running when I shut off the bike. He doesn't hear me ride up to his house.

The stock exhaust is loud?

That thing is stupidly quiet. It might be gutted like mine, but it looks stock. That would be a loud exhaust.

IF it is stock, it's time to sell and buy a moped. If you honestly think your stock muffler is loud, you are a puss.

Ive noticed, with a stock exhaust, when I start mine of a morning and go back into my apartment, the thumping of the motor is VERY noticable. It doesnt shake stuff in the apartment like the racekit used to do, but it is noticable. Vtwins just make noise.

What about the muffler off of an XBRR? I don't know if it is a perfect direct fit or not, but it is pretty quiet.

I was VERY disappointed the first time I heard an RR on the track in a "Thunder bike race". It sound quieter than a stock pipe to me. I can't have much back pressure either, if it was on the RR...

I always thought the sound of a Buell was one of it's strongest selling points. It is always a good idea to look(or listen) to what you are buying before a purchase.I've found it best to be sober before I start spending money.
ie: If it's too loud, sell it and buy a Japanese product. They are much quieter and just as good a bike.

If I wanted friends... well sometimes I just dont play well with others. Loud pipes are your indication that if you dont like the sound, we probably wont get along anyways.

One easy modification is to make your own baffle and clamp it over the end of the exhaust. You could use varying types and layers (thicknesses) of mesh or screen. you could also add some steel wool in between the mesh layers. The key is to minimize the sound while limiting the amount exhaust restriction. Be careful not to restrict the exhaust too much. Start with less restriction then test ride to hear and feel the effects.

The guys I autocross with use that trick to quite their cars to comply with the local track noise requirements.

I plan on adding this mod to my XB.

It was a stupid question fueled by sleepiness and drinking.
I'll let it go. Stupid enough to warrant a pseudonym. Ergo "signing up last night".

I am thinking of buying an old muffler, cutting it open, and playing with baffles. Its more or less an automotive muffler right?

I'll just try to feel less self conscious about pushing my pastimes on others. I just hate bothering nice old ladies for no logical reason.

the ama guys just want you to keep it legal and short shift in populated areas etc.

They offer testing and such to prove to you how loud you are.
