What's the going dealer rate for the 1,000 mile service on a XB?

Also, synthetic or organic in the motor?

At FT Lauderdale Harley Buell they charge $199.95
and Only Harley oil when under warranty is recommended.

In Los Angeles (Bartels HD/Buell) I paid $186.84 the labor was $130.00 (2 hours) parts were $52.51 most of which was for the cost of Harley Syn 3 oil.

I got mine for $150, included the oil change. You got a decent deal including the syn.

I paid $250.00 for my XB9R and $200.00 for my wife's Blast at Knoxville Harley Davidison. After the salesperson said the first service would be free.....

I still can't believe the prices you guys are paying ? surely the 1st srvice/inspection should be free no matter where in the world you brought ?

Just out of interest I paid £130 for the 2nd (2.5k) service,what do you folks have to pay ?

I think we are $179 here...

but lets open a can of worms....why should the first service be free. I guess we could add on some mysterious charge to the bike at the sell and then tell ya the first service is free.

the techs get paid for a living and they deserve it. Who here works for free!!!! mostly nobody.

nothing is free in this world. at some point ya pay.

when I sell a Bike here I don't add on set up or freight. I guess I could and then give the first service away.

six one way a half dozen the other.

I just don't understand all this..."it should be free " stuff.

I am not mad about this I just want to hear some thoughts on it. and not any flaming crap just good general thoughts

Here in the UK it is dealer policy that the first service is free from the dealer you bought the bike from. When I took my bike for first service at my local dealer instead on the one 300 miles away the bike came from they questioned why I was paying for the service and thought it was a computer input error til I told them the bike was from elsewhere, I had no problem paying the £160 ($240?) to avoid the 600 mile round trip for a 'free' service.

But thats us UK-ians.

If I recall correctly, I paid about $160.

As far as the first inspection free issue, it's kind of a toss up for me. I think that if the "company" says that it is required, or strongly suggested to have this kind of service performed at our 1000 mi. mark, it should be free.

But then, you have to look at the economical side of it. Some one has to pay for the technicians time.

Fifty dollars worth of parts that Buell Inc. KNOWS that we are going to need for this service, should be no charge. But, like I said, someone has to pay the Techs.

I was warned of all of the charges that I was going to incur during the life of my ownership. If was going to b*tch about it, I should have done it then. But I didn't. I got the scooter that I wanted. I got great service with friendly people. It all depends on how you perceive your surroundings. My local dealership stopped selling Buells and that is what I wanted. Most of the guys at my local dealer are a bunch of pretentious whores, anyway. I was the one to make the 50 mile trip (if you knew the area I had to drive though, you'd understand) to deal with the people I deal with, and I believe it was worth it. I cannot complain. Well, now that I have run off on my little tangent, I guess what I am trying to get at is, you get what you pay for.

That's a passage from a snail mail I received today about refinancing my home. I know you have all received it or one of its siblings.

It makes no difference how you write something up it's not free, nothing's free, never has been, never will be, and that's economics.

Now, I'm sure that Brian/Daves will sell any of us a brand spanking new XB12 and give us 5 'FREE' services, a top of the line Buell helmet, leather jacket, boots, and bling. Now remember that all of those things are 'FREE!' The price of the bike will be $14.5K (and you more than likely just financed oil changes, clothes, and bling -- nothing like paying interest on oil ;) .) I don't know how the dealerships are paid when you finance a motorcycle, but I'm willing to bet they make an extra nickle for every dollar they can get you to finance -- or something like that.

A beautiful sunrise/sunset is almost free, but where are you standing when you see it? How did you get there?

No problems with Bartel's. I purchased my XB9R from them and they have performed all the manuals scheduled services and I'am just about ready for another service (7500 miles) I like the Saturday service, its on the first come first served basis. I can't comment on there Buell parts availability because I have not needed anything. The service guys seem to act extra friendly when they aren't real busy and more normal when they are busy.

I should probably elaborate on my $260 service at Mancuso. Two things are leaving me w/ a sour taste...

1 - When I dropped off the bike, the tech told me the service would be "about $200". What he meant to say was that the labor was about $200 and the parts are extra.

2 - The tech asked if I wanted to go w/ synthetic. I asked for the price difference. He said about $8. I assumed $8 total, but he meant $8 per quart!

I live so close to this dealer that it's hard to think about choosing another, but I'm at least going to call around for comparables on a race kit install.

If you bought a bike from the J.A.pan compny you can expect to pay another $250 on top of the $200 harley wants, for valve adjustment check and carb sync!

Well all I know is that Fletchers HD told me that the very first service, when I purchased my XB9S, was on them. Like someone said earlier, it is probably factored into the price of the bike at purchase time. I do know that the 5K service cost at Fletchers HD in Clearwater, FL was 225.00. I had my cycle service done at Cycle-Rama in Pinellas Park, FL. They did a great job, Very satisfied with the quality of work and price. Only 140.00. I think that was good for this area.

well they say everything is bigger in texas

Motul twin syn 20/50 is good also and can beused in the engine and tranny been using it for a few years and about 20k miles. all is good.

you can get this thru almost any dealer. parts unlimited catalog

i used the new mobil 1 for v twins.8 bucks at auto zone.and it did make a huge difference in the tranny.used harley syn 3 for that.

Hey buckin and the rest of those figuring out the truth about "free service"

Half of the truth is that the service is not free... the other half is that you do pay for it at some point. The reason the dealer goes through that step (some dealers) is to get you to come back!! Thats all that "free service" is about.

And on that note, some dealers may actually do it for free and suck up the (minimal) cost. This is a way to set them apart in your mind- you'll tell your friends, etc.
