My new XB12S has an idle speed problem. Warm idle speed is 1500 rpms and when hot it climbs as high as 2500 rpms. Unfortunately my bike has been in the shop since 9/9/03. Buell has been working with my dealer on this problem, but they don't even know what's wrong yet. Am I the only XB12 owner to have this problem?

No problems with mine although it has stalled a couple of times right after start up while its sitting there warming up. It does start right back up though, and as I said, has only done it a couple of times.

Don't know if this is it. But a few of the early race ecm's had the same problem here. Replaced them and all was well. Plus the TPS on the 12's has to be set with the digital tech or it just won't work. Does it I dle up and down like that. Say your just sitting there does it flucuate between 1500 and 2500.
Savage, this seems to happen on the 12's if the tps is off a lil and it takes a min or 2 to warm up the the o2 sensor to make it operate so it Idles well.

All of the 12's have to have their TPS set at the dealership. As the bikes come from the factory they are either off or somehow lose their setting while in transit. Its part of the checkoff list on the bikes setup that the dealer is supposed to complete.

If I start the bike hot, warm or cold it idles at 1500 rpm. I've never let it sit and idle more than a minute or two. It stays steady during that time. When I come to a stop, the idle speed is random. Usually it's 1500 rpms, but it could be anything between 1500 to 2500. Sometimes it idles at 2000 for 1-2 seconds then drops down to 1500.

The dealer set the TPS with the digital tech and the idle speed dropped to 1050 rpm for the first time ever. After cycling the ignition, the idle speed returns to 1500 rpms. Apparently, Buell will not pay for any work without prior authorization through Oct 31. So the dealer had to contact Buell. Buell and the dealer have been working on my bike since 9/9/03.

Mine is almost ready for the 1000 mile service so I'll have the dealer check the TPS setting to make sure its right on the money. Wanna make sure its all set before I head to Torque Fest.

This sounds just like the problem I had with my new XB12R! Have your dealer check the cam sensor behind the riveted emblem, mine was installed improperly, (probably by a Harley employee who can't even pronounce Buell) and everything had to be replaced.
The symtoms were the same plus it started dying if the idle dropped below 1000 rpm after it warmed up. Check this soon or you may be pushing instead of riding!!

I had one of those early race ECM's that wouldn't zero.

Took it to two different dealers on at least three occaisions but still it wouldn't run right.

Selling dealer swapped the ECM from one he had in stock and problem went away.

They really pulled their hair out trying to figure out why it wouldn't zero (TPS). Had Buell on the phone and everything.

After 11 days in the shop, Buell sent the dealer a new throttle body assembly. The original throttle plate shaft was loose. I'm not sure what kind of bearing is between the shaft and throttle body, but the end that the TPS attaches to was loose. I could easily wiggle the shaft end 0.025" with my fingers. I put about 300 miles on this weekend with no idle problems.

I just bought a new 2006 XB12Ss and have the Exact same problem with the idle. Good warm up idle speed. Gets hot in the stop and go, fan starts running, and the idle sits at 2500+ rpms. Good thing it's the winter time. How much would we like to bet it's the exact same diagnosis?
