There are a few people who are having this problem. Around 4k the bike hesitates then kicks in, intermittently. I am hearing the fix could be an O2 sensor. Anyone having the same problems or find a solution. I have 6300 miles, race ECM & a/f, D&D pipe.

I have a similar problem and no cure yet. I used to have a flat spot right before 3G but the race ECM, filter and pipe helped that. I installed the ECM and had the TPS reset 300 miles ago and now I'm seeing a real flat spot from 4250 to 5000 where in 3rd around 5000 the motor stutters as if it is flooding. Sometimes it wont even pull past 5000 in 3rd and up! I was told that the race ECM needs some time to recalibrate but 300 miles is already quite a bit... I can't imagine it is an 02 sensor as I have less than 2000 miles on my bike.
Hopefully someone out there may know what's up. If I get any info from the dealer here I'll post it.

Mileage doesn't necessarily mean it can't be an O2 sensor. It could be bad regardless of the mileage.

I haven't noticed this problem in a while, mine was doing it, mainly when cold, when I'd hit it hard. Just bog like it was gonna die at 4000. Haven't tried to recreate it anytime recently. Maybe tomorrow.

Ted lets think about this...new D&D pipe and ecm and a/f. Is it a skip or is it that the power is coming on right then. I know with the race kit before I drilled the air box it was like that.
Plus if you have that box still on with the big holes in it that might be it. Mike had the same problems when he did the big holes. He got a new box did the small holes and it stopped.

hmm. I have small holes in mine. after putting the nallin/force pipe kit on I noticed a "miss" right at 4k, going down the freeway. after a few hundred miles it seems to have stopped.

No it's a skip.Power is a lot smoother with D&D and other mods. When are you getting the new a/f covers(XB12 cover)? That other idea you had with the a/f is amazing! The bike ran great even w/them big holes... till it started to bog between 4-4500rpm. Started this intermittently on Sunday. It's like it has a stu...stu...studder, then kicks in.

It's not big holes vs. little holes. We've got several guys running around with no upper air box at all with no problems, it's hard for the 'holes' to get much bigger than that.

Mine doesn't appear to be doing it anymore. Tried a couple times this morning on the way to work. Brain fart in the ECM?

I had the same thing on an intermittent basis... I think I've narrowed the problem down to gasoline brands.... Over time I realized that Hmmmmm; it seems like when I get 93 OCTANE gas at this one "off brand" station it wasn't too soon afterward that I would start experiencing the "hesitation".... My symptoms manifested themselves typically only after the bike was up to operating temp, then allowed to sit for about 20-30 minutes, then get back on... The hesitation would stop once up to full operating temperature.... I have since stopped using that brand/and particualar station's gasoline... For those of you in VA Beach it is the R-CO station on Princess Anne Rd in Pungo.... I now fill up w/quality name brand pertrol before heading that way, thus eliminating the need to fill up "there".... At this time I see no need to reset the TPS as the bike hase fine "idle characteristics"... I doubt the O2 sensor has issues; as if this were the problem I would expect the check engine symbol to illuminate... It does not....This fact combined w/the fact that if it were a bad O2 sensor I would expect to see poor performance consistantly.... That's just my take..... IMHO - Do the easy stuff first... Switch gas and monitor for continued poor performance....

Our results down here have been the way I said. It could have something to do with heat. This was in the hot summer months. But that is how it has worked here. Real humid and wet air and lots of heat.

Ted they should be here soon They've been ordered for over a week now. They might be there now. Its my day off and I have been real busy for the last 4 days to the point of stupidy on my part.

The upper air box cover for the XB12s is different from the XB9s. There's a conical shape to guide air into the velocity stack molded into it, and the solenoid for the exhaust valve resides in a cutout in the top cover of the airbox.

Just follow Buckinfubba's directions and drill small holes all over a/f box. I made mine w/hole saw and they were to big, so I tried Bubba's next idea; seal the outer air box with weatherstrip. Seat of the pants feels smooth and strong. I will drill smaller holes in the XB12 cover and try again. Bubba got +2hp from just the holes on the dyno. No dyno results w/sealed outer airbox yet.

well actually it was 4 hp and 6 lbs of torque with the holes drilled. Got rid of the dip in the race kit.
Just for all your thoughts The pipe that me and a buddy have been working on is beating the race kit but were still working on it to see if we can get more. It has a wider and smoother torque power band which has given us obviously a wider and higher hp power band . I'll keep ya posted. By the way when we get this done it will also work on the 12,s

Got that power with the standard race kit.
The pipe we arer working on is doing better than that!!!!!
It also is a lott smoother power delivery I rode my bike with our pipe and then with the race kit pipe . so I could feel the difference instead of just looking at a chart. Plus our new pipe is no where near as loud plus it is more of a low rumble.
This is how I spend my days off.....working...but what the hell if I come up with a good affordable pipe it will be worth it

actually an hour of your time...and a lot of holes....take the top off and turn upside down....look at the squares you can get about 3 holes per square with a 3/8 bit...then do the sides and front and back.
Now not that this made a difference but I used a deburrer on every hole to remove plastic and venturi every hole.....oh well who really knows...besides somebody with a machine to see if it works....but there you go

A question for those of you dealers that may have both a 12 and a 9 sitting around -

Will the top, inner air box cover from a 12 fit the bottom air box plate from a 9?

I experienced the hesitation in acceleration yesterday. It was about 38 degrees F when I left for work, the bike hesitated/blubbered at 5100 RPM. I played with it while buzzing down the freeway. It would happen if I slowly rolled into the dead spot, more throttle angle no dead spot. If I tried to hit the throttle hard near 5100 it would skip like the belt was jumping cogs (of course it wasn't). I put in more/different gas to see if it was bad fuel. Same results, must be the TPS needing reset.

I have exactly the same problem as Dbird29 above... I've now put over 400 miles on it and it is still the same - doesn't matter on outside temperature differences or heat of the motor - always the same flat spot / skip @ 5G.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Not to get everybody wound up but. Check the injector wires and make sure they are hooked up correctly. the front should be a gray wire and white/yellow. The rear should be a grey wire and a green/gray wire.
I had this problem here with one that just got hooked up wrong at the factory. It caused the skip at about 4k and nowhere else. It would idle fine and all that. If you ran thru the gears you wouldn't notice it as much.
If you have this problem contact buell customer service with your vin number so they can track it down to the line. I held off on saying this because I don't want you all going crazy tearing your bikes apart because this doesn't happen often. But the problem does seem the same the way you put it.
If that is the problem. Please take it to your dealer to have them switched around so it is covered and you don't screw up your warranty. Plus they will have to reset your AFV to 100% again. If this is the problem it will correct it perfectly. I could go into detail about it but I will assure you it is not hurting your bike. Just check it and if so take it to your dealer to get it fixed please.
If you are not handy with tools please take it to your dealer to have it checked.

I'll have to look at the wire idea. Could sympathetic vibration cause loss of electrical contact on the injector?
I have a 5100 miles on the xb9s but never noticed the flat spot until 2 days ago. Of course it could be I've always just run hard past the spot.

Thanks for the info Buckinfubba. I just did the lid of the airbox (little holes) and surprise, surprise - no more stutter et 5G! Looks like it could be a a/f issue with the stock lid. ??

In any case, if you don't mind more noise ( and I mean MORE - I'd guess 25% more than with the std race kit) then go for the small holes in the airbox - this really seems to open up the motor all across the powerband!

I'll see if the stutter comes back and if so have the tps reset.

I just went out and checked mine (it's torn down waiting parts... ahhhh!). Mine is wired correctly according to Brian's post.

I get the flat spot/skip sometimes too.

Could someone send me some pics of the modified airboxes with the holes? I keep reading these posts about drilling holes in the airbox and I'm having trouble visualizing the end result.

Ran a couple of tanks of gas thru the Lightning today. No hesitation! Looks like it was some fuel fluke. All better now.
