You need new belt, front and rear sprockets, new tensioner arm (or whole assembly), new guards (all), and a shorter bolt for the swing arm brace. Plug and play once you have all those parts.

You might want to take a look in the knowledge vault on this one, it has been very thoroughly discussed in the past.

To sum up:

1. The 2003 models have a belt built by Gates. It was inadequate, and was replaced in 2004. The Gates belt itself was upgraded, but several failures have been reported on this board. Undoubtedly the worst choice for your use.

2. In 2004, the belt was upgraded to a much sturdier belt by Goodyear. This requires new pulleys on the gear box and rear wheel, a new belt, different belt guards, and perhaps some other small parts. A conversion kit is available from several of our sponsors including American Sport Bike. Cost: $4-500 plus labor.

3. In 2006 the belt was upgraded again. It runs on the same pulleys as the 2004, and is most likely the only belt available now at your dealers.

4. Many astute and brave brothers, "The Chain Gang", have converted to chain. Around 40 of them at last count.Looking at the way you abuse your bicycle, this might be the ticket for you. There are two basic chain conversions.

a. The most popular and economic is the "Saintly " conversion. It cost little more than a new belt, and works well. Less than $200 if I recall properly. Available directly from Saintly, one of the members of this board. You do the install.

b. There are several chain conversion swing arms out there by Hals, a sponsor, Innovative, and the Buell race department. These are a lot more expensive, and feature the ability to adjust the chain length and normally provide a couple of inches more wheelbase which adds high speed stability. Normally used by road racers who need the ability to change gearing easily, and well heeled and knowledgeable street riders who just want the best gear.

My recommendation for you:

The Saintly Chain Conversion: cheapest and strongest.

check ebay and piece together the 04+ parts.
front sprocket, rear sprocket, idler pulley arm (you can use the same idler but need updated arm, but i'd get new bearings..takes two 6203 bearings)
and front sprocket guard

you can easily piece it all together pretty cheap.
or if you have the cash, get americansportbikes kit. thats easy enough there! I have heard people say you might need a new rear master cylinder, but my new belt is no where near close to hitting and im 185lbs? maybe on the bolts its different???

good luck!

I have a used idler and used belt final drive from trans. (30 teeth) off of my '04 XB12, interested? I replaced mine either for cosmetics (idler) or to lighten rotational weight (stock final drive), in good working condition.

Found the items that you may be interested in for belt conversion on ebay. Double check the final (front) belt drive gear, I don't think that item will work, not sure?? The rest looks good.
