That's the 1200 kit. The customer wanted to do an 88 incher but the cranks weren't quite available yet.

In your opinion, what's holding back the 12?

Aaron,

Your work is absolutely first rate, and anyone would be proud to run one of your engines. Your 9 power curve looks delightful, and better than a stock 12. But in all fairness, I gotta tell you that is the lowest output stock XB12 I've ever seen, and I've seen a LOT of them. You should be seeing 94 RWHP and 80 ft-lbf.

JimM, as far as what is limiting them, it's basically a couple of things. We limit the RPM to make them super durable, because we cannot afford to have issues. We cannot put the big bore cylinders on them because we will have base gasket issues, which are OK once in a while on a custom engine, but can't be tolerated OEM. Remember we're the company that gets crucified for recalls and quality.(Check the recall records of the Blast vs the 650 BMW if you want a reality check on where Buell's quality is today, but who cares about reality, it's so fun to kick around a little guy).

And, finally, we make them legal for all world-wide regulations. Wanna take a large bet on the Nallin/Force pipe above passing European homologation? I'd be willing to put a LARGE amount of money against that happening!

So, bottom line, Aaron and Nallin do absolutely great air-cooled twin performance modifications; Buell does the best air-cooled production legal twins in the world. Room enough for both to get kudos? I think so! 8^)

Any thoughts on trying the 12's new header on a kitted 9?

Anon, thanks for your comments. And of course you're absolutely right, we are not operating under the constraints of the EPA or other regulatory agencies, and as such, it's a totally unfair comparison. But, unfair as it may be, it does show XB9 owners one of their alternatives for keeping up with the 12's, and that's all I was trying to do.

With respect to the weak results we've gotten on the 12's we've dyno'ed, I hate even saying this because it'll sound like an excuse, but the evidence is mounting that the SAE correction isn't being good to us up here in the high country. There's been a whole series of things that are all pointing the same way, these two 12's are just the latest. For example, we did a race motor for a guy recently, it pulled 158hp on our dyno, he took it home to a considerably lower elevation and it pulled 163. I tuned Kevin Hern's M2 up here on my dyno, it made 104hp, he took it to Shreveport and put it on Brian's dyno (which is now up here) shortly thereafter and it pulled 107. There are other examples and the vast majority of them (all but one) point in the same direction, suggesting we're getting penalized by the SAE correction. STD penalizes us much worse FWIW.

But for comparison purposes, hot-rodded XB9 to stock XB12, the delta is representative, that's the main thing. Those results were taken on the same dyno on the same day (yesterday).

Aarons big bore XB9 sits at 100hp on the chart while the 12 sits at 90hp. How much did it cost that 9 to get to that level? Howmuch do you think it would cost a 12 to get over 100hp? Probably a little headwork & perhaps a pipe, I dont know for sure. Compare how much you would have in each bike $$$ wise & see where the better value is.

Just the head work would probably be enough to get the 12 over 100rwh.I put stage 3 heads on my M2 and picked up 12rwh.Ive been told the ported xb heads are flowing better than the stage 3 thunderstorm head I have.If I remember correctly, which Im not sure of,a riding buddy took his motor out of his XB9,took it to Nallins, had the big bore kit installed, then went and picked the motor up and reinstalled it in his XB9.Im think I herd a figure of around 3500$,for parts and labor to install the big bore kit.

$3500? If it was my dime I would get the XB12 for $2000 more than the 9, get the heads done & maybe the pipe & say bye bye to any 9's that wanted to try & race.

Dyna,

If I were buying one new, and didn't already have an XB9R sitting here my choice would be the 12. Unfortunately the cost to trade is much greater than 2,000. $5,000+ can buy a lot of speed for an XB9. :)

Anon, I realize what strides the factory has made, as well as the restrictions involved in mass production.

I wasn't questioning the stock bike's "value", only from an aftermarket performance stand point.

Dyna,
Don't forget to factor in savings over the life of the bike on insurance. I know in my neck of the woods, it would be quite a bit cheaper to insure the 9.

Some areas that would matter. Around here the Buells are dirt cheap to insure, doesnt matter which model you have. The difference between my X1 & the Blast was about $50 a yr.

Another thing to consider is that if you want to make an 88incher, the 9 starts making more sense financially even if you haven't already bought the bike. The crank assembly and the throttle body stuff cost less than the difference in price between the 9 and the 12, and you get a 7500rpm rev limit.

Dyna put it this way.I got my policy renewal a month ago and I've been paying $172.00 a year through Universal Underwriter's which was being used through HD and now they don't do cycle insurance anylonger. It's been moved to a company called Formost. They want me to pay $538.00 a year for the same coverage.I haven't had any tickets or claims or nothing. How's that for a premium after paying what I was the last 4 year's.

Its a different insurance company. I have the same one. Universal underwriters no longer insures bikes in a lot of states & wisconsin is one of them, yep foremost is the one who took over & they are a bit higher.

The insurance for my dyna stayed the same, but for the X1 it went up from $200 a yr to about $300.

All insurance companies have wacked out & different rates. For a real joke get a quote from either progressive or geico..you can do it online.

LOL...Progressive wanted $4200 for my Firebolt and $2500 for my Blast. Full coverage, middling levels. God, I love America. Legalized age discrimination. Hell, add sex and class to that, too.

bryan,
I dont know what you ended up paying for insurance but I went through the same thing. I know that there is a state farm located on fort street in wyanondotte that will charge 650/yr. I ended up getting a better price from our auto insurer. (nationwide).

My insurance is currently through State Farm (I have all my myriad insurance policies through them) and try as I might no one can beat them so far. I love the answer I get when I ask how to get my rate down. "Turn twenty-five." What kind of bullshit is that? My record's already good, is it going to get better all of a sudden just because I'm one day older?

Anyways, Mookie, you've got mail.

I previously had my other UJM cruiser with State Farm, but when I got my M2, HD Insurance through Guide One turned out to be cheaper; and with $250 deductibles. I also have auto, homeowner and umbrella with State Farm.

Darthane, don't rush to get older.

Oh, I do, vehemently, loudly, and very, VERY rudely. Fuck the squids, may they all burn in hell.

It's really sad that the only age landmark I have left to truly look forward to is based on nothing at all and is anticipated so that an unfair system will get slightly less unfair.
