Folks, I need your help with a tough decision.

I'm really close to buying an 08 XB12X. Dealer wants full retail which I'm not inclined to pay. Here is the deal on that one:

$12,005 bike
$-225 freight =11780 bike
$1041.17 accessories - top and side cases, and tall windshield at 15% off
$407.12 - title, tag, lien filing fees and install labor (labor at 15% off)
$775.74 sales tax for MD
$14,004.03 grand total

He has a leftover 07 with full bags (Buell promo is giving bags away free) and $1500 off sticker. Here is the deal on the 07:

$10,495 - after $1500 off
$407.12 - title, tag, lien filing fees and install labor (labor at 15% off)
$654.12 - sales tax for MD
$11,556 - grand total

So the difference is $2.447.78 or so. The 08 has heated grips ($240 option for the 07), larger diameter forks with smaller turning radius, larger oil cooler, larger crank pin with larger oil pump, and 300 additional RPM. Also, the bike should never lose timing with a magnetic ignition pickup vs a manual one.

The larger oil pump and larger oil cooler interest me since my thinking is the bike will run cooler because of those upgrades.

So, what is the opinion? Is it worth getting the 08 or the 07. By the way, money is always an object, however I can still afford the 08.

I've chimed in on several very similar questions over in the BB&D forum, and my take is this:
I faced almost the exact same decision and went with the 07. After 5000 miles I have absolutely no regrets about not going for the 08. I added heated grips (among many other things, you can see the list on my profile) to make the bike perfect for me. It's decked out. Others will chime in and talk about the wonders of the increased oil pump and the easy TPS reset, but I'm thrilled with the results I've obtained from my 07. BTW-ECMspy (which is free) and a cable can do wonders if you didn't already know...and reset the TPS too. Also consider the 08s are not getting near the gas mileage (check out the scoop in BB&D). Go with the 07 and don't look back (not 08 bashing here, just my take). Use the extra money for a cruise...or better yet FARKLE! Just my 2 cents. This is a great bike so you're in for the ride of your life regardless of the model year you decide on. Good luck!

Uly1080, thanks for the input! The sales guy just bought a left over new 06 Uly 2 months ago and has no regrets either. Not that I really expected him to say that he did. His take was the 06 had somewhat softer front spring rates and he compensates with a few additional turns of preload.

Not exactly sure what you mean by this "ECMspy (which is free) and a cable can do wonders if you didn't already know...and reset the TPS too." and didn't realize there was a difference in the gas mileage between the 07 and 08 models. Any idea why? Forgive me, I'm a little uninformed about those things.

I just bought an '08 XT, 300 miles on it and loving it. I almost wish I had the extra fork travel it bottoms out pretty hard landing wheelies. Even with the compression stiffen up.

I've never ridden an '07 Uly so I can't comment on the differences. I defiantly recommend the cargo boxes, they are massive.

the 08s have driveability issues that cant be resolved at this time.. some of them run pretty crappy at low speeds and the factory has yet to find a cure..

Word to the wise.

Never ever buy the first model of anything.

Lots of changes this year.

May as well be a new model.

Lots of support snd knowledge about up to 07 models.

Doug,
To clarify, ECMspy is a program in which you can essentially perform brain surgery on your Buell. While some may not want to use it to tune/change maps, it does come in handy for simple maintenance issues such as a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) reset that you would otherwise pay a dealer to do. Also very effective at diagnosing any problems with the bike. If you browse around the forum a bit, you'll find plenty out about ECMspy. As for the difference in gas mileage, not exactly sure why, but you can get more info here on some averages that 08Uly (his screen name) is working on:

Here's a pic of my 07.

Josh, nice looking Uly! Thanks for explanation as well. I went through and read the gas mileage thread. The mileage difference doesn't make sense to me between the years even with the motor changes between the 07-08 models. With only a 4.4 gallon tank gas mileage and range is an important factor in my decision. Right now I'm leaning towards the 07.

Yes Joe I am. The more information I have the better decision I will make. Either that or it will drive me crazy!!!!

Understandable. Fortunately you're stuck with a salesperson who'd rather make sure you're on the "right" bike, than one who has to make a sale rightnowwhatcanIdotoputyouonthisbikeTODAY.

Just keep me posted, and don't forget - it's a motorcycle. They're supposed to be as much about FUN as they are about logic. : )

Joe, it's the burden I bear for being "too logical" in my decisions!

Glad I didn't chose my wife in the same manor

shop!

i got my 08 for $13k OTD with all 3 hard bags and a tank bag. most dealers i spoke with in Nor Cal would do an 08 with all the bags for about $14.2k OTD.

i haven't noticed any low speed issues on mine yet. feels extremely smooth.

i doubt the changes are worth $2k, but feel they are at least worth $1k!!!
YMMV

good luck, you'll enjoy either one greatly!
