So I have this crazy old man that is a friend of mine, and he always is bringing me these weird solutions to lifes problems, like taxes and speeding tickets, ect.
Yesterday he comes to me and we get to talking about a bike he just bought... A little while later we start talking about engines and how to make them better.

Here is what this guy said... tell me what you think.
He says you can add small amounts of acetone to get better fuel mileage, I have heard of this one. Then he says he adds a very small amount of synthetic oil to his gas and it lubricates and helps the seals. Might this quiet the Buell motor down a bit?
I have to question him, of course, gas and motor oil? but the man does have 645,000 miles on his truck!

Have you guys heard of such practice, or any pro's or con's?
Thanks

Geez, 645k miles! Does the man work in cali live in florida?

I've never heard of either. Might have to do a little research on that.

I have heard of that, some say it works some say it doesn't. I think the Myth Busters got into this one. My buddy in KC does it and his shit box has yet to die

Acetone does WORSE as far as mileage. It is used for removing water from fuel tanks as it can mix with the water.

Synthetic in the gas?

What seals is it supposed to help? Think of all the fuel-wet seals and think of putting oil in the fuel in large enough quantities to make any difference.

Just the fact that the guy has all those miles doesn't really prove anything; as my Grandfather told me: "If you fart once an hour for a hundred years, you'll live to be an old man."

"as my Grandfather told me: "If you fart once an hour for a hundred years, you'll live to be an old man."

And I herd from an old man if a pregnant woman eats persimmons when she is pregnant she cant produce milk.

I just thought I would add to the old man quotes.

I used to run small amounts of Marvel Mystery Oil in engines. Black magic ... I want to believe .

I add a little Mystery oil directly into the carb on my RX-7 if it has been sitting for too long. Smokes some but lubes the apex seals a bit.

With the XB Buells the crankcase breather goes into the air intake anyway it seems to me. Oil whether you want it or not

Oil is hell on octane. Drops it considerably.

How can oil reduce the actual octane rating...?

-n -p and -o Xylene and Toluene are already found in gasoline. Toluene has an impressive octane rating 122 RON and 107 MON. Race engines with rediculous amounts of boost (40+ psi) can run nearly pure toluene without predetination issues. However, without the high compression and intake pressures, you're just going to run rich with incomplete combustion. Taken to the extreme, it's like running diesel in a gas engine. Diesel has an equivalent octane over 300. Where some is good... more isn't necessarily better.

I don't know enough petrochemical engineering to answer that, but I know it does.

My neighbor builds race car engines. He puts METH...not the drug...in with gas. He says it helps burn cleaner and run smoother. But you don't want to do this everytime you fill up. I do it about every two weeks.

To help further this thought, water has an infinite octane rating. If you dribble a small amount of water into the throttle body while the engine is running, it will help break up carbon deposits. That does not mean that you want to be putting water in your gas tank to help keep your engine clean.

If you have a two stroke, put oil in your gas.
If you do not have a two
stroke, do not put oil in your gas.

I've heard about the Acetone thing. I looked it up, and found enough bad things about it not to ever want to try it in any of my vehicles. It seems 'regular people' pouring it in there, were saying great things, while anyone actually researching it or dissasembling parts before and after, were all saying terrible things.

The oil in the gas doesn't sound like anything I'd want to try either. Just seems like it'd add a build up on the valves and pistons, and if you add a bit too much it'd SMOKE!

I use "Seafoam" to clean the inside of my car motor.... but not often, and just a little bit inside a vacuum line, it completely burns off within 5 minutes. Basically like steam cleaning everything in there.

I've never done anything like that to the motorcycle. I suppose I could take off the air filter and spray a tiny bit into the carb.

The main question is why? Go out and race the piss outa the thing for a little bit. The inside of that motor will be sparkling clean afterwards.

if you want to run oil in the gas why not just fill up with diesel that has a high octane rating too haha

Back in the 'old' days of Manx Nortons and pre-unit Triumphs adding a few drops of Castrol R to the fuel was a common trick, and was done because the lubrication system on these old bikes was pretty poor at the best of times, particularly at the top end of the motor.

These days there really is no need to do this, and it is just a left over old wives' tail from the bad old days of motoring. It will probably do more damage to piston rings/valve stems etc than make any improvement.
