alright guys here it is i removed the X from my airbox(yeah yeah i know you want it)and had to wet sand the cover because super-glue was used at the factory to apply it. wet sanded all the way up to 600 and it came out nice. i went at it with all the novis products and cannot buff it clear again to save my life. any suggestions. i pulled the X to do some striping, heres what im into so far.    | ||

paint looks sharp! I can't tell you what product you need, but a buddy of mine once used a "plastic polish" that he was using to take the chrome off this headlight plastics. What it left behind was bare black plastic that was so shiney and smooth it looked painted. So all I can say is don't lose hope - there's something out there! | ||

You want to go much finer with the sand paper, like to 2000. Then you polish it with a String buffing wheel, which stays cool, and a fine rouge or Eagle One Nano polish. Then finish up with Plexus. There was a very informative thread on this subject, but I just can't find it, and I have spent ten minutes looking. I think Micro Mesh was also mentioned. We need a better search engine at this point, because there are so many useful threads. | ||

by the way this is a trial run semi- permanant...i had vinyl stripes cut by a guy i've used before....so if it doesn't pan out i've lost nothin but time and i'll peel em off. but i'm pretty sure i'm in love w/ the orange on black(harley did 1 thing right when they went with that color combo)    | ||

G-John has it right. Go to 1000 to 1200 grit wet sanding, then on to 2000 grit. If you get it sanded thoroughly enough it will be easy to buff out the 2000 grit scratches. I would machine buff it with a medium fine compound on a wool pad and finish with a foam pad and finer compound. If you have all of your stripes on you will have to protect the edges of the stripes with masking tape. | ||

I see lots of people that have a heck of a time cleaning and polishing there plastic's. The real fix to not dealing with gas stain's and the crap that come along with translucents is to have them cuffed and cleared. Then the problems are over and they are easy to keep looking new. | ||

thanks to all for your responses...again you guys all came thru. just got it squared away! wet sanded up to 2000 grit and then hand buffed with 3M PERFECT-IT 3000 rubbing compound and my airbox is clear again  . i'll post up in a few hours once the stripes are on. | ||

When you get done sanding and you're still frustrated, you need to get some of this: I use this on all my plastics including my clear windscreen and I get zero swirl marks and a sparkly-clean and smooth finish. It's available at Autozone for about $5 and it will get your entire bike gleaming. | ||

One of the guys here uses CD repair kit fluid on his Valencia Orange. You know the stuff you wipe on a scratched CD or DVD and buff out? Works awesome on his bike, looks just as good as new. Easy to get and keep around for those just-washed spiderwebs, after you get a good finish on it as listed above. | ||

pwnzor - does the Nano remove scratches too, or will I have to do all the wetsanding nonsense to get those out first? I'm trying the Nano right now, but it just kinda makes the scratches shiny ::rolls eyes:: |
