I bought new plugs for my 2003 XB9R the other day from Advance auto parts. I had to special order them so I did that. I just went and picked up my plugs and I don't think I got the right ones... They gave me NGK KR8AI iridium plugs. The computer said they were a fit for my bike. Right now it has NGk DR8ES-L is it. Should I go ahead and use these plugs or return them?

I just looked it up and it says i need a DCPR8EIX... The computer at advance auto parts said this was an equivalent. Should I take them back?

Take them back they are the wrong heat range.

Should be a DCPR9EIX for the NGK Iridiums.

They obviously didn't ask you if your vehicle had air conditioning....

I forgot to say that I also have the factory race muffler, ecm and air filter. Will that make a difference on the heat range any?

Ditto... order a set from American sportbike, they will send you the proper plugs.

Thanks I will bring these plugs back and tell advance auto where to put em. I would just get them from my local harley/buell dealer but the parts guy was adamant that I put 6r12 plugs in my bike. I even showed him in my service book where it takes 10r12a, but that didn't work. So now I am going to be working on my bike myself.

Better yet! Go down to your local Harley/Buell dealer and get a set of Buell race plugs!

NGK still list the wrong plug in their catalogues for the XB, so this happens quite a lot unfortunately.

As has been said, the correct Iridium plug for the XB range is the NGK DPR9 EIX-9 or DCPR9 EIX-9 (if you can find them)

The only difference is that the DCPR range has the larger screw on cap included and the DPR doesn't (just liberate some from old plugs).

Mother Hubbard!!

Beginning of the winter I installed the DCPR8EIX's after talking to the NGK tech support and special ordering thru Advance Auto. '04 XB12s w/ race kit - runs fine, although pops a lot on downshifting (popped with the HD plugs too)

Think I need to change them out or just pull and check on the plug end deposits?

PS. Would the DCPR8's tend to run cooler and leave sooty deposits leading to fouling or vice versa?

For what it's worth:

I've had the DCPR8EIX's in my 07 9R since the summer.

It runs no better or worse than it did with the stock Champion/HD plugs.

No pinging in the hot weather, and no fouling so far this winter.

The DPR8 and DCPR8 are a hotter plug than the 9 and is closer to being an equivalent of the old type Buell plugs (6R12?) before they changed to the 10R12 type.

These are more suitable for Sportster use (unless you ride your Buell like a cruiser of course)

These plugs were marginal on the tuber frame Buells but even more so on the XB, and you could run the risk of melting rear pistons, as was the habit with the older hot range plugs. I would advise changing to the 9 asap.

Well I returned the plugs today and broke down and went to the harley dealership. They had the Buell pro series plugs on the wall so I went up and asked for them. The guy at the counter tried to tell me I needed the 6R12 harley plugs once again. Anyways, I walked outta there with some pro series plugs with part # 32822-01Y and plug # HDBP12P. Thanks for the help everyone!

Well I just found something very interesting on my bike. I went out to change the plugs and when I pulled the front plug, it was gapped to .022. It is an NGk DR8ES-L. I haven't gotten the rear plug out yet because I don't have the right size socket for it(my tool set bites). Anyways, i looked at the plug in the rear cylinder and I noticed it is a harley davidson spark plug. I don't know what part number, heat range, or gap it is yet, but I bet that may be why my bike doesn't run as good as it should.....

Another excellent plug for XB's is the Denso Iridium IXU24. Curiously enough, they recommend the proper part on their web site.

http://www.densoiridium.com/find_part.php

Resists fouling and is long lasting.

Available from Appleton HD and others.

Asking a Harley mechanic about Buells is often an amusing but rarely an illuminating exercise.

I finally got around to getting my rear plug out and it was a harley davidson 10R12A gapped at .044. The front was gapped at .022.... I took it out for a spin and it was much smoother now. Smooth idle and it feels like it makes better power. If I ever buy a used bike again I will definitely change out the plugs first thing.

I'm getting some Nology plugs this week. I also ordered the wires and coil from Nology as well.

Anyone here ever use these? All or any one individual part?
