I'm new to Buells, does anyone have a good recommendation for what type of oil works best for them? Bike's an 06 XB12Ss. Thanks. |

I have tried AmSoil. I didn't feel that it was any better than the Syn3. |

Mobile 1 Syn or Amsoil. I like Mobile 1 because I can get it at Autozone in either 20W50 or 10W40(which I run during the winter) |

I put in Amsooil 20W-50 in the motor and tranny and it seems to work well. Tranny shifts easier, thats the only thing I noticed. |

I currently use redline racing in 20w60, but have also used amsoil 20w50 as well as mobil 1 20w50. All in both holes. |

Maybe a better question is which oil *not* to use... as most oils will work great. On the "do not use" list, I would put Castrol Syntec 5w50 (full synthetic). It protects fine, but gets consumed quickly. |

Do not use Mobil1 Gear oil in your primary. Unless of course you have something against your stator. |

You can't go wrong with H/D lubricants. Especially the primary case, there, I only use H/D Formula +. The engine I use Shell Rotella full synthetic; this can be bought at wallyworld by the quart or gallon. Oil filter, I've used Mobil, Purolator PureONE or OEM Buell/HD. |

I also use Amsoil 20w-50 in the motor and tranny. I also noticed easier shifting, though it appeared my tranny was a little over full from the previous owner. I'm very pleased with Amsoil products so far. |

Thanks to all for the many choices. Sounds like I can't go wrong with H-D or Amsoil. |

Whatever you do, DON'T USE WORMS!!! Although the proteins in their skin is very slippery, it is actually TOO slippery. It'll cause your ball bearings in the engine to stop rolling. But they do a great job of cleaning up any soil that got past your air filter and in your engine... Whatever you use, just follow the API and vis. rating in the manual and if still unsure, check with the oil manufacturer. Make it simple. |

I used Amsoil in my Sportster 1200s and Mobile 1 in my Honda V-4 and old Suzuki 1100. No problems. Mobile 1 is a bit easier for me to get so I will go with that after I do my first oil change. First I will break the bike in and have the dealer do the first service, after that I plan to do everything myself, as I have on my other bikes. Anyone know who "makes" the oil for Harley? |

Extra Virgin olive oil is ok, but the higher flash point of peanut oil makes it better for frying. The advantage to the olive oil is that it is higher in monounsaturated fats, where the peanut oil is higher in polyunsaturated fats - both good fats by the way, but I prefer monounsaturated. Either one is excellent for raising your HDL (High Density Lipoprotein levels), but olive oil has also been shown to correlate with lessening the occurence of certain cancers. The first pressing of olive oil tends to produce the most flavorful oil, with each subsequent pressing producing oil that is lighter in flavor than the previous. Olive oil is also part of a Mediterranean diet, which has long been touted as a healthy lifestyle. I've also use Olive oil to fuel hurricane lamps in a pinch. It's an expensive light source, but sometimes it is the only thing you have. You could also run olive oil in your diesel engine if you had too, but you'd need a fuel pre-heater if you plan on leaving the car or truck outside when the temps run below freezing. I'd avoid canola oil, which is a manufactured oil made from toxic rapeseed oil. There is no such thing as a canola, it's a tradename. What the hell is a canola anyway? I hope this helps. |

I use 3-in-1 oil on all the pivoting parts, but I think WD-40 would work just as well... |

http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2156.pdf This is a very interesting read and despite the fact that Amsoil put it out and their oil "won", there is enough information to draw your own conclusions. I would say that any oil that meets the manufacturers requirement will do and that you cannot go "wrong" with the manufacturers oil. That said, it is my opinion that the manufacturer's recommended oil meets a minimum specification and needs to be cost effective. If you want superior protection then research is required. What constitutes superior protection and what that really means over time can really only be decided by you. I think that modern oils and sex (both properly selected for the application) can only be described as good and better Read with an open mind, some of you might change what brand you use. For others - no proof is necessary to support their preference though they will offer anecdotal stories with hearsay and magic - oil is a religion and only theirs is the right one. I'm not flaming anyone - running what you like in your bike and suggesting it to others is fine, but if you are going to be adamant about it - offer supporting data. I was already using Mobil 1 20w-50 because of it's availability and assumed quality associated with their name before finding this report (it came in 2nd)...... |

Has anyone here tried Lucas Oil full synthetic 20w-50w? I have been using this oil for the last 2500mi and it seems to quiet the lifters and I haven't seen any consumption so far... But thats just in the engine i recommend the Formula Plus for the trans and the HD type "E" in the forks... My .02c... By the way why did no one let the new guy in in on the fact that oil threads are a questionable topic....?? |
