Hello All and im sorry if this has been covered before.

But im looking for any ideas on which grips have good feel and knock out a good amount of right hand vibrations (hate that darn numb wrist after 20 minutes on her)

I have an 03 XB9S, and do mostly city driving.

so far im looking into these.

but i really want something solid black, and i hate all those darn designs they have on some, just black is all i want :-)

thanks for your help buellers!!!!!!!!!

Numb hand? Try riding with less pressure on your hands? Use your back to support the weight instead of your arms.

That said...

I've used the stock grips, the traction grips and the superbike grips from American Sport Bike and I like the stock grips the best. Never had an issue with vibration though.

I have the Buell Traction grips on my bike.
They have a slight barrel shape that fits the palm of your hand very comfortably.
They were reasonably priced too.

Buell Traction grips. They're a little fatter and seem easier on the hands.

I am a firm believer in the Traction Grips. Indeed, they fit the palm more ergonomically than conventional grips. Prior to their use, I was having some numbness problems in my hands. Also, they look like they belong on the bike, no kitsch. Cheap enough too.

You may need new grips...

But on the other hand, you may be suffering from some other ergonomic problem related to the seating and handlebar geometry. You may have too much or too little pullback. The bars could be too far forward for you. They could be tilted up or down too far at the end. They could be too low. There's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all motorcycle any more than there is a one-size-fits-all helmet.

You might also be more susceptible to vibration. You could put in a "Bar Snake" or bar end weights (Google Manic Salamander) to cut down on vibration.

You have an S model with all of the tubular handlebar goodness that brings. Experiment with different bars, rotating the bars forward and back, aluminum bars, dirt bike bars, ATV bars, etc. The best bars are usually the ones where you can reach out with your eyes closed and simultaneously land your palms flat on the bars just as your fingers touch down on the brake and clutch levers. Yes, I'm a stickler for this kind of thing, but it makes all of the difference in the world when you get it right.

This is what worked for me.

Buell Traction grips, are very good, and inexpensive.

HVMP Bar ends, definitely reduce vibration.

I have found that it is very easy to hold on too tightly without even noticing it.

Perhaps consciously relaxing your grip as you ride may help as well.

+1 for the Buell traction grips. Had them on for a few years now and love them. While you're changing them I'd recommend the heated grip kit from American Sport Bike if you do ANY cool weather riding at all. They'll pay for themselves the first cold snap.

Kyrocket, how well do those work? I am getting ready to install crossroads bars on my bike and figured I should do this while I'm changing grips. I was also going to install the Uly/cityx deflectors once it gets cold. Also, where did you mount the switch and run the wiring?

And to the OP, I too am a believer in the Traction grips. Can't go wrong for $16 IMO!

yes yes tell me more about the heated grip kit. does it work well?
on my old bike i had some Oxford grip wraps and they worked freaking awesome! do these heat very good since they are under the grip, does the heat get through the grips and through the thick winter gloves?
and thank you for reminding me of this. i actually had that exact kit a while back, and gave it to a friend after deciding to just get the oxford wraps instead on my old bike.

I love the traction grips too. For larger hands especially they just plain ROCK!. Plus by moving your hand around
on the grip during a long ride the barrel shape allows for several different feeling grip contours to help ward off
numbness.

For vibration I'd go with a bar snake, or some of the heavy stainless bar ends that I've saw semi-recently on a link
here somewhere...

Some grip heaters are done via inserts into the bars, others wrap around, and others are integrated into the grips
themselves. It all depends on what your individual set-up requires.

Do a google search for Spider Anti Vibration grips.
Lots of color combos and work great to keep the numb hand away for 2-3 hours at a time.

HVMP Bar ends work great. I also have BMW grips that come on the f650gs. Also very good grips and not as expensive as one would think. I also have poly heaters and they are great. Turn them on hi to get the grips warm then must switch to lo because they get too hot.

O.K. O.K. here goes.

The heated grip kit is self adhesive like a large sticker and has two small wires running from them. When you take the old grips off simply wrap the "sticker" around the bars and slide the new grips over them (don't forget the grip glue). I wear fairly thick HD gloves, by no means winter gloves but pretty thick and if I have the heater on high I have to take my hands off once in a while to cool them off. That's one + for the kit, it has a high and low. Here's a shot I took to show the mounting of the fog lights but as you can see, if you have any slot/hole in a bracket somewhere you can mount the switch in it.

Check American Sport Bike page I think they have everything laid out that you will need in one of the pictures. My resistor needs to be replaced only because of something I did to crush it but other than that I have had no problems with it for several years now. It's pretty simple to wire and comes with instructions.

If I was too vague or someone wants more pics or info. just pm me and I will be happy to oblige.

Let me also tell you I ride a tuber (the old Buells, not a potato lol) I have not had the pleasure yet to tear into an XB but it seems that you could run the wires under the "fake" fuel tank back to the fuse box. I wired mine into the factory license light since I no longer used it and this way I won't walk off and leave the grips on since they only come on with the key on.

Rah(many sevens) What did your friend think of the kit or did they ever get around to putting it on? Just wondering.

Oh, one question I almost forgot to ask: how did you route the wiring from each of the elements? I was thinking of drilling a hole in the handle bars to route the wiring so it is hidden. Any suggestions?

Also, did you sandwich the throttle side heater between the grip and the throttle tube, or between the tube and the bar? I'm not sure how hot these get, and I don't want to melt things...I would think between the bar and the tube just to minimize movement/stress of the wiring, but I figured I'd ask.

1324 here's the answer to your wiring question. Right side "sticker" will wrap around the throttle tube and sandwich between that and the grip. I slid some shrink wrap around the wires for some protection and to keep them together so there wouldn't be a couple of smaller wires blowing in the wind. The right side just hangs down and is mixed in with everything else coming from the grip.

On the left side I took the housing apart and routed them through there. Gives it a really nice factory look and you can't even tell that the kit is on it. If I do it over I may drill a small hole in the plastic housing on the right side but the wires don't get in the way and I don't even notice them while riding. The picture kind of blows it out of proportion. It looks like it is hanging way out of the way but they actually come in close to everything else. I can't seem to find the digital camera and the phone is quicker to download.

If you can tell by the picture, just in front of the bundle of wires coming out for lights and signals, that small wire is the heat wrap coming out of the housing. Scope out your housings first. They're real easy to take apart and put together and the plastic drills much easier than the handlebars. I've always been hesitant about drilling the bars. Now drilling things I've picked up at the bar... now that's a whole other thread!

Thanks for the clarification and pictures, they definitely helped! I'll take a look at my cables and wiring once I swap the stock bars for the crossroads, but if I can route the wires with the stock wires/cables, that will be good enough for me.

Thanks again.

They really aren't that hard to put on, after you're done you'll wonder why you were sweatin' it. The resister needs to be mounted somewhere toward the front to keep cool I think I remember reading somewhere. I mounted mine to the frame with some GOOP, you can usually find it at any parts store or Wally World. Either the automotive or aquarium stuff works about the same and it will peel off if need be without damaging paint or finish. At least mine never has. Just a little hint to help out.

MAKE SURE YOU DON'T MOUNT IT SOMEWHERE WHERE THE FORKS WILL SWING AROUND AND PINCH IT BETWEEN THE FRAME!

I need to make a run to Radio Shack before it turns cold. After the poker run today, I'd like a little cool air. 183 miles in mid 90's was like riding in a blast furnace all day.

Thanks for the install tips, Kyro.

I'm looking forward to using them, I'm just too lazy to install them in the middle of summer. But I know I'll be thankful in about 2-3 months (or hopefully more!). All I need to do now is pick up a set of Uly handgaurds to keep the wind off my digits. Hell maybe even a heated vest to really extend my riding.
