I wrapped the headers. Where to two pipes meet into one, I had extra wrap. The wrap started to glow at that area and smoked much than other areas so took off the overlap and it no longer glows.

I thought the hottest place on the header would be the header meets the engine, not where to two pipes come together.

It is gonna stink and smoke for a couple of rides/heat cycles. It is normal.....

If the wrap worrys you remove it. No sense wasting time worrying about something so trivial.

I did end up removing it. I may put it back on when I have time too burn out all the smell (xmass vacation), but the stench clogs my nose and is staying in my clothes which is a problem since I use it to commute to work.

My observations-

-Bike does not get as hot when moving above 20mph.

-In traffic, it seemed just as hot.

-Bike takes longer to cool after turning off.

-When taking off wrap it seemed that the pipes were lightly baked with dark brown oxidation ( after two days ). I polish my pipes weekly which takes off regular oxidation, but it seem like to get them to shine I had to take of 2 months worth of oxidation ( by looking how dirty the polishing rag is ).

-Deep exhaust note.

Deep exhaust note just from a wrap??? How is that supposed to change anything?

Possibly, the frequency the pipe resonates or reverberates at is dampened by the wrap, thus changing the audible tone. I imagine the heat insulating properties make it a viable sound insulator as well, thereby reducing the level of ambient exhaust noise and allowing you to hear the pulses from the can more clearly.

Wonder how it'd sound if ya wrapped the can?

I wrapped my S1 pipes in '97. They still smell like wet dog when they get wet and hot.

exhuast gas stays hotters because the pipe stays hotter(doesn't lose heat to atmosphere due to wrapping), thus it moves through the pipe faster, thus changing the sound of the exhaust note...

Yeah, after wrapping my pipes my Jardine stickers melted off of the can.

was it type R wrap?
because that would explain the change in exhaust note :P
