Normally you turn the key the gauges sweep the fuel pump whines the oil light goes out you hit the starter n wala instant fun mobile. NOT TODAY. Gauges sweep. No fuel pump. No oil light. No start. No clicking or clacking like starter or battery. NOTHING. Fuses are all good. Where to go from there? |

Chek your kick stand safety switch. I have seen a simalre situation and the kickstand safety switch was the culprit. Also check the clutch safety switch too... |

Do the XBs have the kickstand switch? |

Yes But I've noticed Since I had most of the charging system replaced(stator starter voltage regulator battery). It's weird,Before it just wouldn't start if the kickstand was down. It would start but die if you let out the clutch (didn't have to hold the clutch in). Also now with the new parts the fuel pump wouldn't prime until you put the kickstand up AND pull in the clutch. Also recently (week or two) I've noticed the neutral light is acting up. It'll go brighter when you pull in the clutch to start it. Or it'll be real dim when in neutral when riding. Or it just plain woulnd't come on at all. SOMETHING definetley isn't right and I don't want to pay the 50$ just for the dealer to come get it and mabye end up paying out my ass if whatever it is isn't covered under extended warranty. |

Do the XBs have the kickstand switch? Yes My Ulysses does NOT have a kickstand safety switch. So the other XB models have one? Did you check the battery? |

The 2003 XBs had a kickstand safety switch. I believe it went away with the 04 models. |

Buelltroll, your latest starting problems could be related to the diodes. 1) There are two diodes in the starter interlock wiring. They are located in the fuse block, upper right, first two rows. Check if these are blown/ installed backwards/ missing. 2) There are three relays that must work before the engine starts. Check the wires going to the ignition run/off switch. If a wire got pulled out of that switch or there is a disconnect anywhere with that wire, you will get nada as in no ignition relay click when trying to start. 3) Do you know if the dealer or did you bypass the sidestand safety switch? |

Diodes are still there. One facing right the other facing left. I'll check the wires in the morning,I never did anything to my sidestand switch and I'm pretty sure the dealer never did either because as I said before it used to just die if you left with the kickstand down but after charging system work it started not even letting the fuel pump prime until you put the stand up. |

Kickstand up presumably means you're sitting on the bike with it dead upright? maybe check, or bypass the BAS - just a WAG, but its one of the few other things that might change as you take the bike off the stand. |

I idled the City X on the side stand, clicked it into first and the engine did not shut off. |

Yes I checked the killswitch.... Please people I REALLY dont care if your bike has a kickstand switch or not.(14 replies and only THREE were NOT about rather YOUR bike has a kickstand switch or not) Mine does. I think I'm just gonna bite the bullet n call the stealership. This is the last time though,I don't care if I take a loss on it or not I'm tired of wondering if today is the day its gonna leave me stranded way the hell up in the canyons. Don't call the dealer. They may or may not find the problem and will charge you mucho bucks in the process. If this happens and they don't fix it, you will, no doubt, get turned off for good. Instead, I would suggest getting the factory service manual, taking your time and fix it yourself. Every conceivable troubleshooting step is in there related to the problems you are having. I only touched on 2. Face it, you have a lot of maybe interrelated problems with this bike, probably caused by all the aftermarket stuff you changed and the way you treat the bike. These bikes are so easy to work on, it's almost criminal that the dealers charge what they do (ducking for cover). |

I think it's too late. I already have a service manual. I don't feel like working on it. I want a bike I can turn on and ride and turn off n not worry if its gonna start the next time I want to ride. I think I got the 1098 sickness, because this all just seems WAY TOO FAMILIAR and frankly I'm tired of it. Aftermarket? I have the same setup as 90% of people on here. |

Tell ya what, Get a new bike, any bike, and abuse and stunt the shit out of it like you do your XB and report back if you do not have one single problem. Not being an A$$ I really want to know. I always hear everyone talk about they ran there "insert Japanese model here" into the ground and "I ain't ever had no trouble." |

I don't ABUSE or STUNT THE SHIT out of my bike. If canyon carving at 100mph is abuse mabye I should buy a bagger eh? And if the occasional wheelie is stunting mabye I should try out for team extreme or sumthin eh? I'm just sick and tired of reliabilty issues the ONE place I havent had any is with my original 03 belt,It's got 14k on it and still hasn't broke. I have been waiting for it to for years now. |

What year? S or R model? Check the battery connection terminal bolts. If you don't put in a few more washers than stock they tend to rattle loose. Did you wash your bike recently? Check the relays on the bike. I had a dead one that gave me similar problems. The relays were upgraded sometime after 2003. They are only $5.00 a piece. |

Oh, sorry. Didn't see you have a 2003. Replace all the relays at once (3) to keep things simple. Also, put a voltmeter across your battery. It should read 12.6V or more. If it is your original battery then you are probably going to have to replace it. Go to a Harley dealership (if your Buell dealership isn't close) and ask for a battery for a VRod. They are the same as the Buell. I think I paid $57.00 or so for it. Good luck, Deep breathing helps. Unless you hyperventilate and pass out, of course. |

every pic you post is of you doin a wheelie or burn out. When you first came to bad web all you talked about was doin wheelies and stunting and your profile even says you broke your front motor mount 'cause of "hard landings" I don't care how you treat your bike just don't expect any bike to be fail safe unless you ride like a grand-ma... |

my riding partner, twintour, had a starting issue on the way down to the dragon. we had to bump start him several times along the way. when we got there he started his trouble shooting. what he came up with was something real simple it could have been overlooked by anyone. there was a layer of corrosion on the starter switch and the contact. a few scrapes with a knife to the switch and contact to clean it off, and it was starting up like it was meant to do.maybe not the solution to your problem, but maybe something to consider. at least i did not mention the sidestand safety switch. |

The belt gets replaced every 15,000 miles. You've got 1000 more miles to go. That's something you can do by yourself. It's not any more bother than replacing the chain on a ... Wait, I get it. You have the service manual and you don't feel like working on it? Well then, why are you asking us for advice if you are just going to take it to the dealer regardless? Have you ever argued with the service people at a dealership about the way they do or don't fix your bike? Trust me, you don't wanna get on their short list. This forum is all about Buell enthusiasts and everybody who takes pride in their ride. {poet, haha} But, of course, this is the internet and everybody is entitled to their opinion. That's why people who see your list of problems may have something to relate to at least one of them. So, we're here for ya, man. Just let us know if you REALLY want us to help and you REALLY want to fix your bike. But that's OK. Take it to the dealer. Believe it or not, we are all very interested in knowing just what the problem is with your bike, now that you've gone public and have a thread for it. Honestly, Troll, I'll betcha there are people out here in cyberspace who would probably bet on exactly what your problem is (with the bike). |

Darn, I just went back and read your post about the diodes. You said, "One facing right the other facing left." On my 03 XB9R, both diodes face left (arrow pointing to left side of bike). Do you think that might have something to do with your starting problem? It's in the FSM, Figure 7-10. OK, I'll bet it's a diode problem. Any takers? |
