It appears that in order to get the benefits of registering as an owner on the Buell web site you MUST provide both your VIN# and you MUST agree to receive either printed or electronic promotional stuff...
"You must either opt-in for promotional e-mail or printed material (for Fuell Magazine) in order to register as a Buell Owner. "

Fine, I don't mind if I get some email or brochures from Buell - in fact that might be nice. Then I read the find print in the "privacy policy" which actually should be called the "lack of privacy policy".

The Customer Identifiable Information we collect about you can include name, address, telephone number, E-mail address, credit card number and expiration date, password, preferred E-Commerce dealer, purchase history, IP address, what Web sites visitors come from, which pages are visited at this Web site, and information about online activities that are directly linked to them...
Harley-Davidson/Buell is in the process of contractually requiring other third parties to whom we transfer your Customer Identifiable Information to use your Customer Identifiable Information only within the context of their agreement(s) with Harley-Davidson/Buell, and only for the purposes stated above, including direct marketing of products or services to you. At present, however, not all third parties are so contractually bound, and some third parties may use your Customer Identifiable Information for other purposes.

Is this serious?? Buell is better than this. I was excited by the idea they are trying to offer some real stuff on the site, but I can't register until they can at least give me some reassurance my info isn't going to the russian mafia and who knows who else.
Grrrr....

Someone else will have to capture/link the image that seems sort of appropriate:

I kind of wonder how this sits, liability wise, for a future potential identity theft lawsuit for careless sharing of information. Credit card number, expiration date, and other pertinant information????? I think not, where's the remote control.....

This is why you never give out your real phone number, ESPECIALLY if it's a cell phone.

Lots of companies do this and there's nothing illegal to it if you agree to the terms. It's not the end of the world like a lot of people try to claim. You just get more annoying junk mail.

Perry,

They're only collecting you CC info if you provide it.
Do you make any online purchases through the Buell site?.
Do you participate in any online e-Commerce? If so, take a moment to read the fine print in their PP (Privacy Policy) and TOU (Terms Of Use) - that is if they have them posted - I think you'll find that the language is pretty similar. In most cases, you should have the option to either opt-out, or be provided with information on how you can cancel or have your account removed.

It's a good thing that you took the time to read the fine print before you entered into the agreement...

Cheers
-Jack

I agree with Jack - just don't give them any info you're not comfortable with giving.

I signed up probably the first week I had the option to do so and the junk mail hasn't been unmanageable.

I'm with Slaughter, however at the end of the year I bet the amount of junk mail, etc. far exceeds the 6 issues of Fuell I get.

I didn't intend to give them my CC number (although maybe they'd offer an online store at some point which would be very cool).

I always read the T&C and privacy policies... see I'm in the computer software business myself and I know something about how it works.

Even if I don't give my real phone or CC, the VIN# is required. I'm not handing out my VIN only to have it distributed around the world. I suppose I could invent one...

At least you can get to that page. It is even worse for me. I run BeOS operating system and it does not have macromedia FLASH support and I can't even get on the site.

For some ridiculous piss me off reason they won't even allow you to register without FLASH.

I don't know who does their web site for them but that is a really stupid idea. At least allow access even if the experience is a little degraded.

My 2 cents.
