I don't think they have a service interval other than replacing them when they wear out. That's cool that you have 20K with little wear! We should ask "Gowindward" about this subject. He puts tons of miles on his 12R. I wonder if he has checked his...

I change mine every 20,000.
But that was because I've had to change stators every 20.
I noticed some wear, so I changed it while I had the case open, it's an inexpensive part, so if you've got it open anyway, it won't hurt.

Oh yeah, there is a wear measurement guide in the service manual. Says how much wear would be present at the time you should change it out.

Had 80,000 miles on the original tensioner pad in my FXR primary. Had plenty of material left.

I have not checked mine, and I have 29k+ on my bike. DTX is right there is no service interval for it in the '04 service manual. I thought about replacing it at 25K, but decided that it must not need it if the service manual doesn't require it.

I have 30,000 on the bike now and am trying to get it ready to race this coming weekend, weather permitting. With preparation time being limited, I had rather not open the primary up and with what you guys are saying, I will wait 'til another day to check the shoe.


Had 80,000 miles on the original tensioner pad in my FXR primary. Had plenty of material left.

I too had a high-mileage '84 FXR (93,000?). I think it was one of the best all 'round bikes Harley has ever built.

My 03 XB9R shoe was barely out of the SM specs at 13,000 miles. For $24, I like to have a new one handy any time I've gotta take off the primary cover.

37K on my Uly, and still have the orignal one in it. Every time I check the primary chain free play for the last 20K+ miles it is OK.

I understand if you slow the bike a lot under compression it can wear faster due to the load on the chain being on the tensioner side. Kind of like going down a steep logging road in first or second gear and using compression instead of the brakes to hold your speed down for mile after mile. (which I do, without any ill effects)

I had 138,000 miles on my 85 FXR with the original shoe on it and 10,000 was with a side car engine sprocket you have to turn the mounting plate upside down to take the slack out of the chain. IMO I don't think we've had a wear problem since the wet clutches were installed
