If the "fork" on the kick stand pivot is spread, the bolt is broken. Mine was.

..or if the old one has broken at any time. As was what happened to mine. Kinda scary, keep an eye on it.

Yup my side stand broke off while riding down the road. Sucked when i needed to get off the bike. When i found some of the parts on the side of the road the bolt was sheared

Guess what you cant just get the bolt anymore. You got to by the whole kit 42$ for a 2$ bolt. Sucks even more now hugh?

Hopefully that means it's cause they changed the design of it to make it better.

if the stand has "spread its fork", just lean the bike against the wall, on right side, remove the side stand, squeeze the fork shut a bit in a vise, reinstall with a touch of grease on the smooth bearing surface, and loctite on the threaded portion of the pivot bolt.

So they quit making the bolt? I wondered why I've been waiting a month for one. The new tech inspectors just want it tied not removed, so I thought I'd put it back on to make it easier at home.

The kick stand does not require a $42 bolt.

One of the brothers posted a nice conversion where he drilled the thing out to half inch, put the bolt in from the back. Worked like a dream.

Could someone, such as the original author, repost, and possibly correct my impressions if not accurate?

Be sure to use a grade 8 or better bolt if you do replace the kickstand bolt!
Also be sure that it pivots on a shoulder or bushing, not on the threads.
The threads would wear down, possibly through the hardened surface, and you would
end up with either a sloppy fit, or worse a sheared bolt (again).

I was a machinist for several years and have seen failures like that more
times than I care to remember. I'm sure others on the board have too.

I replaced mine after finding out that it had sheared off at the threads...it took the HD dealer 1 month to get it in. When I finally got it, on the package it came in to my horror ....... "Made in Taiwan"
