Greetings,

Well, it's done! It works great and is easy to do. Use the stock S flyscreen as a template. Mark the standard mounting holes on the back of the Uly windshield base and drill four 1/4" holes. Mount using the stock S flyscreen screws then install the clear section. Done and ready for testing. When all is OK, remove and finish as desired. Enjoy!

It works great! Had it up to 100mph for testing. All the wind blast is off your chest. Well worth it.

$128 for the clear windshield, flyscreen and mounting hardware.
$35 for the Line-X.

I'm curious as to how much it would cost to get the front fender, chin spoiler, flyscreen, and my turbo airbox coated... any ideas? Turn around time? (assuming they can coat the fiberglass airbox)

I saw you reference Herb or someone from California, but I don't need exact numbers.. a rough estimate (+/- 50$) would be much appreciated.

It cost $185 to have all five parts Line-Xed (fender, flyscreen, air box cover, chin fairing and cheese grater).
Line-X dries almost instantly. I dropped my stuff off on the way to work, picked it up on the way home and installed it.
If your Line-X guys know what's going on they can coat anything!

That orange thing is a cap for my catch can drain hose (I did not have a black one). I have a Motion-Pro petcock hidden in the chin fairing that controls the flow of "gook". I put the cap on to keep "whatever" out of the small section of hose after the petcock.

OBTW, when you Line-X the cheese grater the holes get filled in so when you are riding in the rain water does not pass through. Unfortunately your back still gets wet because the rear "fender" is too short but stopping water coming through the cheese grater does help some.

Nice job. I'm still considering getting a spare set of plastics and having them Line-X'd. How is it for bugs and grime getting imbedded in the textured surface? Is it easy to wash?

I have had 30 or 40 bikes in my life with every kind of paint or plastic you can imagine. Line-X is by far the toughest and easiest to take care of stuff you could ever get. When they apply the sealer coat over the Line-X base coat the surface actually becomes slick rather than tacky or rubbery. Very easy to clean bug guts out of the texture. No more scratches or water spots, etc. Sweet! If you want to get fancy you wipe the Line-X down with Armor-All type products and it looks outstanding.
I have had it on my bike for over a year now. The only thing I would ever replace Line-Xed parts with is carbon fiber stuff and I'm so pleased with the looks and performance of what I have, especially at the cost involved, that I doubt I will ever switch.

That looks great! How does the wind protection compare to the stock flyscreen?

If you find yourself needing additional protection, Cee Bailey's http://www.ceebaileys.com/buell/ulyssesws1.html offers a screen that is 3 inches wider and 2.5 inches taller. Makes the Uly all-day comfortable at highway speeds, so I assume it would do the same for the S.

With the right prep any surface is Line-Xable.

The stock S flyscreen offers NO wind protection at all. Buell also offers an optional tall windshield as well but I went with the standard one for starters. It is a massive improvement over the stock flyscreen.

FWIW, there has been a recall of the Buell tall screen, as it had a tendency to fly off at speed. The CB piece, IMO, offers better protection and is much higher quality. If you need it...

Sweet. I thought about installing the whole Ulysses cluster but that was cost prohibitive. This is relatively cheap. You don't get the DC outlet which, while handy, isn't that big a deal. You got part numbers for the three Buell parts? Did you get them pretty quickly from the dealer/factory?

Does the Line-X stay on the chin fairing OK? That might be what I can do to solve the problem of the gray part of the fairing looking like crap since it is next to impossible to clean and gets everything on it from/including the front tire (tire mark from small emergency stoppie).

Answer me this.... if you have to drill holes in the Uly screen to get it to fit the S mounts, how is it supposed to attach normally? Just curious, really.

Oh, and what "mounting hardware" are you talking about, if you used the stock S mounts?

Yes, the Line-Xed chin fairing is the answer to the cosmetic problem. Just coating the front section up to the rivets on the sides will work great.

I got the parts from Dave S. at Appleton H/D. You probably already know this but he is one of our sponsors. I think I had the parts in 10 days with the Labor Day holiday in the middle. I don't have the P/N's, I just told Dave what I wanted and he set me up. Dave is your man!

I've been looking for a bigger windshield since I ride so many miles and have held off on the options because of one thing or another; Laminar Lip mounting is cheesy, word that the buffeting is just moved, etc. I'm thinking this is a must do, and it is a Buell design. I can't think that the Uly/Ss difference is that great that this would cause any major handling problems. Color might be the only problem if I don't Line-X it. Thanks for the info and pics.

Yes, I filled the Uly mounting holes before I had it Line-Xed.
The mounting hardware that I referred to was the four screws that hold the stock S flyscreen on.

Just ordered the parts from DaveS. Unfortunately it doesn't come in Thrust Blue, so I ordered the black and will paint/coat if I hate it. I ordered 4 extra Ss windscreen mounting bolts and plan to use nuts on the underside to plug the original holes in case I decide not to coat it, should just look like 8 mounting screws. Hope the Uly and Ss patterns are far enough apart to do this.

I went with the regular screen as Ejiii used but there is also a 4" taller clear section for $99 as DaveS pointed out for those who want more protection. Also Buell so it is presumably wind tunnel tested OK.

Oops, just looked at the Buell site and the Uly has 6 mounting bolts according to the pic. Hopefully the screen comes without the XB12X emblem?

There are 6 mounting holes in the Uly windshield base. Three on each outer edge. I filled mine with Marine-Tex before I Line-Xed the panel.
The panel also comes with a Uly emblem.
I worked the set up for about a week now with runs in the 80 to 100+ mph. Seems like it's pretty solid. Now to come up with a rear water deflector so my back does not get wet when riding in the rain!

On the stock XB flyscreens I've seen, there appears to be a strip of self-stick foam about 1/2 inch wide/thick running horizontally across the entire width of the flyscreen about halfway down.

If you've noticed this on your stock flyscreen, did install a similar piece of foam on your Ulysses windshield?

Sorry for all the q's. Going on a roadtrip in less than a month and any relief from windblast would be welcome.

Mikemax - If I do this mod, I'll prob just fill in the pre-drilled holes with black plastic fasteners/snaps often found in cars.

Saw the normal and 4" extended Ulysses windshields mounted side by side at the local dealership. The extended is quite large, should be nice for touring. I would worry a bit about not having the upper bolt that the Ulysses has with the extra pressure. I think a backing strip of metal on each side using the stock holes would be warranted if I feel the need to upgrade to the extended windshield later.

It's amazing, the foam is there to prevent headlight reflections from coming back to the rider! Ride without it and you will see exactly what I mean. BL (before Line-X)the black Uly flyscreen reflected like crazy. AL (after Line-X) it has been toned down a lot. To answer the question, No, I did not add the foam to the new set up.
I will probably pass on a picture without the clear shield. It's set in place just right. It comes off easy enough but the difference in curvature from the Uly to the S (as slight as it is) takes just some minor adjusting which I really don't want to disturb. Sorry.

Is the screen still working for you? I do a lot of long rides and would like to have better wind protection so I am considering this modification. How tall are you and in hind sight would you go with the 4" tall windshield? Also, does the wind still blast you in the chest or is it above your shoulders. Thanks for the help.
