just curious, but you have 6800+miles on your bike and have NEVER checked the oil before?

either way, some of the xb's have had some oil usage issues for the first while of there life and then seem to get better.

i just had my valve seals replaced for the second time. they had a problem with them with the 05's. mine would use a excessive amounts of oil as well. the up dated seal are orange. keep track of how much oil you use. mine was using about one and a half quarts in 500 miles.

On my 1000mi. check the dealer changed all the oils. I checked the transmission a few hundred miles later and found I had to add over a half quart of oil.
I don't think I could have lost that much oil in the transmission.

Allowing others to add, adjust, or maintain the proper fluid levels on YOUR motorcycle involves a great deal of trust.
Please think about that statement.

It also adds a great level of ASSumption when assigning blame(s)

"thanks for the stupid comments."

Your welcome... and thanks for the stupid topic.

You might want to check the air in your tires, too.

Yellowbolter - we own bikes that require regular preride inspections. I will tell you that I have actually let my oil run below the add line once.... it made me reevaluate my preride responsibility to myself and my bike. These bikes use oil at a sometimes faster than expected rate. That being said, just think if there was a possible warranty issue and the shop received yer bike low a quart of oil. I'm not preachin' but our equipment is our responsibility.

You might want to snug up the bolts too. I doubt your shop did that if the arses missed the oil.

Peace
Freezer

Yellowbolter's post was a good reminder to everyone not to trust the dealer to properly fill the bike after they have serviced it.
I know that I did, the first service, but never again.
In my many, many years of having vehicles serviced at the various shops (bikes and cars) I never ran into the problem I found at the Harley dealer with this bike.

PS - How many of us include the transmission oil level as a regular pre-ride check

I saw one of the harley mechanics checking the oil on a Buell XB by straddling the bike to hold it upright, he said it was a little low. When I told him the proper way to check the bike was on the side stand, he checked it that way and found the level correct.

what level do you use for a cold oil level...like a 1.4 inch under the full line?

If it weren't a pain the arse, I would check it more often. I assume (maybe wrongly) that because the transmission is a relatively closed system, the likelihood that the fluid level would be low is remote. When I change my fluids, the level is never low.

Because the oil is coolant, lubricant, and vibration damper, I check it before and after every ride. If I end a ride and the oil is at the right levels and then check it before a ride and it's low, I know that it might be that I just haven't let the engine heat up enough. I never want to find puddles of oil in the filter box.

Your bike is your baby. Period. Your bike is a piece of meat even to the most dedicated service shops. Expecting them to do anything not on the list is expecting them to go above and beyond the call of duty.

I do everything I can not to check the oil cold. Part of the preride check is a good 5-10 minute warm up.

I check my engine oil after I ride and add it then, when hot. I don't fill it to the full line on the stick though. Maybe an eighth inch below.
I never find any oil leaking from the bike.

Above the minimum line=no fill

At or below the fill line=Add until oil is 1/3 to 1/2 of full. (you are adding cold oil so I leave room for that oil to expand).

Ft_bstrd,
I mentioned the transmission because shortly after the 1000 mile service on my bike I checked it and found it to be more than half a quart low.
Obviously, since it's not leaking, the dealer didn't fill it to the proper level.
There should be no need to check this on a frequent basis.
I do check it after they have changed it,
because of the previous experience

I change my own unless I have it in for some other service. I can imagine what happened in your case. One guy is working to fill the primary and gets call away. Someone else is told to button her up and doesn't check to make sure that all the trans oil is in.

I wish there was a sight window. It would sure make checking a lot easier and would cost virtually nothing to add to the design.

If you dont give all the information up front, how does anyone know how to reply?

For all we know you could have taken the bike in for a tire change and now are pissed because the oil level is wrong.

Facts are good, information is good, speculation and name calling are not.

Dude, settle down.

I was asking an honest question.
By reading it, there were many things that you could have been 'getting it from the dealer' for. I had no way to know that you just bought it, neither did anyone else. Hence the reason people were shocked that it was your first time checking the oil.

All I was saying is from my experience on the boards, is that if you give complete information, you get a much better response from people. I was just trying to help you out and get all the facts before people started jumping you.(that didnt work so well)

As Old_man said:
"Yellowbolter's post was a good reminder to everyone not to trust the dealer to properly fill the bike after they have serviced it."

I think that would have echoed throughout the reply's if more complete information was presented.

This goes for all service that gets performed, not just motorcycle. My mom had the oil changed in her car and they forgot to put the oil fill cap back on. That made a mess. Always look to see what has, and has not been done to your vehicles.

Has a lot less to do with what you said than how you said it.

Start any conversation like that and you pretty much guarantee everyone stopped listening, and any hope of help, went out the window with the 3rd word.
