So I had my first chance to compare the sound of a Duc to my Buell...

Was leaving the movies a couple of days ago, walk up to where my bike is parked, and as I'm putting all the gear on a couple of bikes pull up, one being a Monster. I would like to say that there is definitely a BIG difference between the sound of these two bikes. Of course I had to start mine up quick so he could hear the sound of an American twin with Micron before walking off. I love the sound of both, but I think I got the better of the two bikes. Don't get me wrong, if I didn't get a Buell I think I'd be riding a Monster today, but I like where I ended up.

Yup Ducatis are a close second but for plain old evil cacophony of sound that'll wake the dead (and set off car alarms) out of a sound millenium of sleep a Buell wins everytime.

Excuse me but I beg to differ.

ALL the XB range sounds like someone wrapped towels around their mufflers before they left the factory. Not until an aftermarket muffler is fitted can an XB be heard from more than a stone throw away, and then most sound too Harley like these days.

Even an S1W with Pro Race Kit fitted can't come anywhere close to that Ducati sound, and there's a good reason for that. The Ducati revs higher and faster due to its shorter stroke configuration.

Nothing can beat the V twin sound of a Ducati with Termi's fitted. Nothing ya hear!

Another thread where someone's opinion is shot down... and another's is turned into facts.

Good on you Sam!

I work just a few miles from a Ducati dealership and with the windows open it's great to hear those Termignonis going past at full chat. Some of my non-biking workmates can identify the different models, it's a truly spine-tingling soundtrack and you'd have to be dead to not appreciate it.

On the other hand, the dry-clutch models sound absolutely godawful when they are idling

C'mon Kyle. Not even the most hardened of Buellers could possibly believe the XB's with a different than factory muffler of some sort sound better than a Ducati on Termi's. But I know. Music to ones ears and all that.

Dry clutch, that's not a rattle. It's the sound of a thoroughbred racing machine, lol.

I like the sounds of a Ducati on Termignosis... but then again I like my XB. I was just giving you a hard-time, though I don't think the Deep Thunder Exhausts sounds like a HD.

I like the sound the MV Agusta F4 makes... had the pleasure of riding with one (read: he had the pleasure of riding with me) a week or so ago. Didn't seem too good in the city, but man is that thing quick on the Autobahn.

I'll beg to differ on the wrapped in a towel exhaust sounds.

When I bought my Firebolt, I took it to a friend's house. He read it through his neighborhood, rather spirited, and I couldn't believe how loud and GOOD it sounded, even when he was quite a ways away.

The only thing that comes close to the sound of a Ducati is a S1 with the Pro pipe on it???

Dude been there done that, bought the pipe new for my old tuber. It sounds great but not Ducati great. The XB's sound much nicer then the tuber's in my opinion.

I don't know. I REALLY like the sound of a Honda RC 51 or even a Superhawk with aftermarket cans. IMO, the best sounding twin out there! Ducs have a very distinctive sound too, but I like the Hondas better. My Buell with the D&D sounds pretty badass, if I do say so myself....check it out for yourselves here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uutci3sJes0. And just to be fair, some Ducs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjxRL4Nc3do, an Arsey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqs9R6pztfs, and just for giggles, my old TLS with Yoshis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4-Uj-Sdumg from about 5 years ago.

One of the beauties of living in the #1 Ducati city in the world that is lined with skyscrapers is the aural pleasures.

Ducati's are everywhere and you can hear them coming, in Gotham, about 9 blocks away.

Not much of a desire to own one, but I dig listening to them. I like to listen to Ducatis and ride a QUIET Buell.

I love the sound of both bikes. What I DONT love is the sound of our fuel pumps. Has anyone found a way to quiet that down at all? Does the DUC have that annoying sound or no?

Also, you have to love the looks of the Mosnter SRs.

Beautiful indeed.

Wow, I didn't think I'd start such an argument. Like Kyle said, I was just stating my opinion.

Let it be stated:
Both our bikes had aftermarket exhaust.

Both bikes sounded awesome in their own way (90 degree vs 45 degree twin, longer vs shorter stroke, water vs air cooled, 4 valves vs 2, etc.)

My personal opinion was that my Buell sounds better.

Richard - My full pump is quiet (06), however my buddy's is obnoxiously loud (03 or 04). You can hear his when he is idling... you can't hear mine at all.

Interesting! Does anyone know if the 06 pump will fit on an 03?

If so, I am so there.

Thanks for the info?

I decided to just get the Race kit for the new 12.
The Race Kit on the 12 definately sounds different than it did on my 9.

My dealer ordered one from another dealer and I managed to get one of the bling bling shiny ones. It sounds freaking awesome!!!

I think the RC-51, with the right pipes, is the sexiest sounding motorcycle on earth. I don't know if it is the exhaust or the gear-driven cams, but either way, pure hotness. Those Jardines in the clip above sounded to "snappy." I heard one while at college that had a sweet thump to it, but I never looked at the exhaust. Probably Acropovics. But, the bike sounds pretty hot plain stock as well.

Ducati + pipes= an awesome machine. My XB sounds good, but no way as deep, high reving, and fast reving as a Duc.

Ducs rule!

I heard a Suzuki TL1000 this past weekend that faked me into thinking it was a Ducati. Obviously, it had aftermarket pipes but DAMN! The only thing missing was the jingle-jangle of the multi-plate dry clutch!

how about the clacking of the extra cam shaft in the ducs clack clack clack... no thanks. desmo crap: to high maint, to expensive, limited parts avail, limited dealer support, to much status symbol and BS with a duc.... riding around trying to look pretty.... gimmie a break

It's all personal preference. They are both great bikes. I test drove a Monster 900 before getting my XB12S. It was an easy decision for me. I liked everything about the XB and I did like the Monster but it just wasn't "me" Those are my opinions on the bike as everyone else is entitled to theirs. This is a "Buell" enthusiasts web forum isn't it?
