I wonder how difficult it would be to mount up a fake radiator on a test mule and run it around town causing a stir, all the while disguising the real surpise.

Nothing the matter with water cooled engines, if that is what you want.

I started riding fifty years ago, and seem to have gotten by without the benefit of H20. Don't see the need to start now.

That being said, the design of the Buell engine would not be improved by simply water cooling it. Improved power would require other changes to allow higher rpm such as short stroke, multi valves, the usual.

I have often wondered why no one has come up with an innovative cooling system somewhere between conventional "automotive" watercooling, and pure air/oil cooling.

I was thinking of a miniature refrigerant unit to cool the heads, or something entirely different, that would allow a modified version of our engines to put out another twenty horsepower or so, without losing all of their traditional character.

I bought my Buell because it was an innovative motorcycle. Whether it's air or water-cooled is of no consequence to me.

Like Gentleman_jon says, more horse power means higher revs. Higher revs means giving up on the self-adjusting valves. Add to that your water cooling and you really start to eliminate the low maintenance advantage of the Buells.

There are low-rev waterpumper V twins around. One thing does not lead to another necessarily, it only may if the designer wishes.

You wouldn't lose the fan. It would just move.

Given Buell's history, if they built a waterpumper it would be unique, efficient, beautiful in a technical and bare-knuckled way, and it would make its own place in the market because of it.

How does liquid cooling make more HP?

well,
in the simplist explanation...
hp creates heat. the more and the quicker you can remove the heat the more hp you can create.

there is more to it than that but that is a quick way to explain it...

how bout a PS spermback water cooled buell is in order ;)

I like my air cooled engine. I love the sound, the feel and the look. That being said, I'd really love 20 more ponies at the wheel.

Now here is the real question, and I am not an engineer so don't flame me, but wouldn't it be possible for Buell to build a new air cooled V-twin not based on a Harley Sportster engine that is lighter and more powerful than the current engines? That's what I am hoping for.

To me, the beauty of an air cooled bike is simply one less fluid to leak. : )

The concept pic is a side view of a Sporty with a V-Rod style radiator, rear fender and Headlamp.

Good looking bike in my opinion.

Well... It looks photochopped to me because the lower end of the sporty motor doesn't look like that any more. That said... Sounds plausible to me. The testing grounds are indeed in AZ (or they do testing here anyway). Anyone know where they're at? I could take a run by there at some point and see what I see : ). I won't say anything though : ). It's the Ford proving grounds right?

I have a ghillie suit...

XBRR engine... air-cooled... 150 HP. I'll bet this engine is destined for our street Buells... it's fully shrouded too and is completely reliable for demanding and severe race use... Buell isn't racing simply for racing, but to gain knowledge and technology for the street bikes... maybe slightly "detuned" for at least 120+ hp. Light-weight titanium connecting rods and intake valves would be nice too like Corvette's LS7 427 smallblock.

That is 100% a photo chop. That is V-rod body work grafted onto a standard sportster. Looks terrible.
