When my bike goes back in the shop for the accident repairs, I'm going to be getting a new rear tire. It's got almost 4000 miles on it anyway, and the tread is wearing thin, so I thought I'd go ahead and have a new front installed as well.

I was looking at the Continental Force Sports or the Conti Road Attack Sport Mileage, primarily because I like the tread design, but I don't really know what's out there or what's good. I am not a terribly aggressive rider (still sportin' some healthy chicken strips!), so I doubt I'm ever going to need very high-performance tires. I want something that will give me good mileage, decent corner grip, and good wet grip.

Any thoughts? Opinions? Advice?

Thanks!
~SM

Metzeler Roadtec Z6.

Several schools of thought on this subject, Z6 happens to be my choice. You can ride them all the way to the edge, and EXCELLENT handling in the wet. You can expect to get at least 7k miles out of the rear and about 8-10k miles on the front.

Opinions are like a--holes... everyone has one.

I haven't tried 'em (yet) but it seems like my next set of tires will be Roadtec Z6. I've been using Sportec M1s (mostly for track days with Keith Code) but they do get chewed up quickly...

M1 is a great tire, but it's almost as far as you can get from being a touring tire.

I ran M1's until I realized I was never going to use them to their full potential, and changing tires every 3k miles got expensive. The Z6's have seen me through every corner under every condition without fail or fear of losing traction.

I'm not saying other tires aren't good, just a testimonial to the product I have tested and trust with my life. In 18 years of riding on the street, it's the best tire I have personally used. Others will testify that another brand is the best, and to them, it is. Nothing wrong with that at all. Try more than one set and stick with what feels best to you.

Pwnzor, glad to see a real review on the Z6s on a Firebolt. I bought a set for mine and at the last moment installed M3s instead. A friend of mine (who shall remain nameless) who also frequents this board had an incident with Z6s and is going back to Sport tires. He could have had the same incident with M1s or M3s, but probably wouldn't admit it ( I probably wouldn't either)

I have run the road attacks for the past 2 years and am very happy with them, the only issue I have ever had was poor handling when Cold on Cold days, of course I ride on Cold March days and it is to be expected. I wholeheartedly endorse the Conti's, perfect for anyone who isn't extremely aggressive but still likes to ride hard, hold really well.

See the recent threads here on Michelin Pilot Roads. Several of us have run them for several thousand miles with excellent results.

I was searching for a high mileage tire without sacrificing performance, often a contradiction in terms.

They guy at Wheel Works in Stanton, CA (old cat with a long beard) said that the Z6 was wildly popular among his customers riding sport touring bikes. So I went for it, and found that for me, it's been the best tire all around. I run it out to about 1/4" from the edge. I have seen pictures of a Honda ST1300 planted solidly in a turn, all the way over, scraping pegs and pipes, sparks flying. Matter of fact I saw it here on BadWeB but of course when I do a search I can't find it.

I hope you don't mean my FJR with Z6s. sparks bike

(It doesn't mind being mistaken for a BMW, but a HONDA?)

Just a thought, maybe we could have ONE tire thread instead of a new one every few days?

Bridgestone 020 sport touring tyres are great. The rear has a dual compound construction which means softer on the sides, harder in the middle of the tread.

I can get the employee discount on bridgestone tires so I would prefer to but them. The only bridgestone tire I have seen promoted so far is the 020 sport touring. So they have a dual compound tread, that sounds like an excellent idea. What would be the downside to that?

I believe dual compound means they lay in a tougher strip down the middle of the tire, with the more tacky rubber on the sides. More mileage without sacrificing cornering ability.

I can't see a downside to that.

I run Pirelli's on all my Buells.
I just got back from a 6500 mile roadtrip from New Mexico up to New England by way of Deals Gap and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
I put the Strada's on about 1000 miles before I left and they still have tons of tread left.
They shreaded the dragon and cruised the parkway with nary a slip. I'm VERY happy with them.

There is no downside to multi-compound tyres. In fact it is an excellent idea that only hasn't become commonplace because it's not easy/cheap to make a multi-compound tyre. [As an aside, I notice Pirelli Diablo Corsa (trackday/race tyres) have a triple compound rear. The Diablo Strada tyres fitted to new Buells are single compound.]

I've run a Bridgestone 014 (sport) tyre at the front and 020 (sport-touring, dual compound) tyre at the rear, and find that this combination performs very well with good mileage. The bonus is that they wear out around the same time rather than the rear wearing out first.

i'm running the metz. z-6 -good grip-appears as though i could get 5-6,000 miles out of them.heck the only complaint i had against the stock 207's is that they didn't last long enough! (-arn't the pirelli "strada"s basically the same tire as the z-6's ???)

I do a lot of (nearly) all-weather commuting, and also needed a tire with better mileage than the 4500 I got on the stock rear. I put a set of Conti Road Attacks on my 12R about 800 miles ago... Absolutely awesome! I've heard how bad the Dunlops were, but the difference was nothing short of amazing. Without really trying, my bike's no longer sporting chicken strips! It just glides through the corners, and tracks much straighter on uneven pavement.

Now if they live up to the mileage claims, I'll have it made!

Well keep us posted on those Continentals, I don't think I've read any posts from someone who wore them out yet. Curious to see just how long they last. It's a key factor to me because I'm not out to scrape my pegs at all.

Funny thing is, I'm not much of a scraper, either... The Contis just flow so nicely, that I'm way over without really thinking about it. Sweet seemless transitions from verticle to leaned and back. The Dunlops always had a "nervous wobble" about them in the corners that inhibited my riding much more than I realized...

Nobody's mentioned Avons (AV45/46 Azaro's).

http://arizonamoto.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=SWMT&Category_Code=AV4546

I've been using them on my K1200RS for a few years and like them. There's a set on my Firebolt now and they feel fine and seem to be wearing well.

In a pinch I put a Conti RoadAttack on the front of my K1200RS and did not care for it - it made the bike "stand up" when braking in a turn like it never did on other tires.

ok so if there is no real downside to a dual compound tread design then why does virtually no one use them? Are they that much more expensive?

The Conti Road Attacks are also dual compound, as are the new Sport Attacks! I recieved a set of the RA's last October to 'TRY OUT' I did have the M1's on there, and Bridgestone Battleax's.
I did wear out the Conti's, and both the front and the back wore together! I honestly can say that the Conti's felt every bit as good as any of the previuos tires.
Mileage was Phenominal. I got abot 8700 miles on the set. I must say that as soon as I put them on, I made a shotgun trip up to St. Louis to visit my father. 2700 miles with 80% being superslabs, at well above posted speedlimits. That had to have an effect on the longevity of the tires. I figure I could have gotten at least 10000 miles easy if not for that trip.

This is the rear after I decided to burn the remainder off. It would not let go off the ground, kept launching the front end upward.

and this is the front worn more on the off center than the middle.
Trust me, like Pwnzor said, many people have different opinions as to what is best. I would not hesitate to put another set of these on my bike, and I like to think that I ride pretty aggressive at times. Don't think you can go wrong with them!

ok cool, thanks for the info and pics. How did you feel about the bridgestone battleax tires? Did they even compare to the contis? As I said b4 I can get employee pricing on the bridgestones so if you were in my shoes would you get the contis again anyway? I ride the bike to work 30 miles almost everyday and then go play on the weekends, havnt been to a track day yet but wouldnt rule it out. Thanks again
