I have two issues at the moment...

first is a biggie... what the heck do I do with everything from under my R tail... battery/fuel pump/shock reservoir

second... I've fitted the S tail but have yet to remove my fuel pump, as I didn't read the whole procedure before "tinkering"

So now I'm stuck with my R subframe attached by the fuel pump resting on a sawhorse on the left of my bike.

Anyone gone through the fuel pump removal? Can you talk me down before I put off my plans for a while and put my R tail back on?

I was going to take a picture, but, batteries are dead.
As soon as they're charged I'll post a pic.
Not sure how much help it'll be though, mine is an XB9S, not converted, but, it may just help anyway.

hey glitch...
man that'd be really helpful. Still not sure that I'll be able to finish this swap this weekend. Have that fuel pump issue to rectify. But pulling the tail apart was pretty easy, I'm sure putting it back together will take twice as long...
Not sure what I'll be doing with the rear R... I've got a pair of vintage saddlebags I'm going to have to work a mounting system for... but if all works out, I'll prolly sell them, with buell brand saddle bags and tail bag. Shall I mark you as interested?

Um, call me dumb, but what does the fuel pump, thats in the fuell tank/frame, have to do with this conversion??

uh Glitch, can you help out here?

Most XB's do not have the fuel pump in the tail if memory serves.

Could we be talking about the rear brake cylinder reservoir or the rear shock remote reservoir.

When Brian put the R tail on my S, I don't remember any fuel pump issues.

There is a separate fuel pump cannister on the R that is fitted under the seat, next to the shock reservoir. Which leads to my dilemma about space in the S tail. So into the S tail, I have to fit the Battery, shock reservoir, wiring, and Fuel pump cannister (it's identified in the R manual as such... and has the daunting fuel pump disassembly requirements to boot!). I'm thinking I'll have to mount the shock reservoir outside the compartment. Not sure how to keep the fuel pump canister away from the battery leads... which again points to me having to reassemble the R tail this weekend.

It's not a fuel pump canister.

It's an Evaporative Emissions Control canister. It is present only on California model XB motorcycles. You may remove it safely and discard it. Route the fuel tank vent line down and away from the motor. I have mine behind my left heelguard.

There is no reason I can see for removing the fuel pump for a tail swap.

So this is what I'm taking about.

The instructions mention disconnecting the fuel pump connection and the sends me to the fuel pump disassembly instructions (which calls for swing arm removal - yoinks!) Has a hose labeled carb and a line labeled fuel... looking at the manual it shows how to clean an object with covers removed that looks a lot like what could be in this black cannister.
Please realize that I'm only going by the manual and a bad copy of it too boot, so if anyone knows better... I'm just going by this, please understand I'm not trying to be snarky.

here's another view. Again the R sub frame is rotated backwards along side of my bike (which has the S tail on for a quick look.
end of subframe is pointing towards the front of the bike. You can see the S seat on the right of the picture and my white airbox

So on one of my last bikes... the emission cannister was snipped and plugged. Would it be something as simple as that? I do have to worried about the gases under pressure correct?

One hose goes to the fuel tank, the other to the air intake. Route the tank line down and away, and plug the intake line. Toss the can in the dumpster.

About the helibars... subtle difference, extremely subtle. Haven't had a chance to ride with them yet... worth the $200 I got them for, I think so. About 2/3rds the size of the XBR's top tree, makes the dash look tiny.

Hey Glitch,

Man these REALLY help. Man, you don't know how much these help. With you and Matt (pwnzer)'s help I think I've got this done this weekend.

Now the daunting tasks of creating mounts for the saddlebags (and getting them painted white - they are aged off yellow)

I've got a local guy that does leathers motogearusa.com (warning his website is a bit obnoxious) but I owned a one piece of his and it's really good for the price, and he was the only guy to work with me in creating a suit that looks a bit more like a two-piece stormtrooper suit... and maybe works a bit less than a racer suit... all for just over the 50% deposit for most custom leather places were asking (Z, Syed, Bates). If you want more info, just pm me.
He's a good guy with a good product (again for the price).

Hey Glitch,

is there some kind of battery tray? Just asking as I can't see too many attachment points in the S tail. Nothing to keep the battery from sliding around. Hmmm and the shock reservoir mount looks a bit different... but that should be a simple swap.
Looks like the main thing would be the lock cable.

Yeah, there's a tray...kinda.
It's part of the undertray.
It's held down by a small rubber strap.
Don't worry about sliding around, ain't enough room for any of that.

Hey Brian... Thanks, mine looks a little messier at the moment.

Do you have any locking issues? I'm sure it's causes by the fact that I have a R lock cable still, but I can't for the life of me, keep the seat locked.

And did you find any problems with the lock interfering with the tail light connector?

On CA XBS models, our canister is hung, rather ungracefully, off the left side of the engine for all to see and know you are in compliance. On my CA '04 Sporty, it is hung under the frame, in front of the rear wheel.

get the S cable for the lock. it will make life easier.


i did have a problem with the wires connecting to the tail light getting in the way of the lock. if you look in glitch's pictures, you can see that the S model has a different plug for the tail light. it is hard wired into the main wire harness. on the R model, you can disconnect the end of the harness and make your own custom harness.

Ordered the S cable, for now I've got the R cable snaked out of the tail and hidden for access.

Still wondering about the master cylinder....
