I'm looking to buy another helmet and I'm kind of stuck between an Arai or a Shoei...any opinions?

Anyone have the Arai XD? I love the look of the helmet, and the extra area of the opening would be nice in city riding.

I have the typical HJC full face now, and I want to retire a Shoei my gf uses and gve her the HJC. The HJC is okay and gets the job done, but man is it noisy!

Ok. Here is the story.

Arai is the best, because they have three different shell shapes, so you can get better fit, especially if, like me, you have a long oval shaped head. In helmets, fit is everything.

However if you find a Shoei that fits, there is nothing the matter with them either.

On a side note, I dropped my Arai on the floor, and broke a vent. I called them up, and two days later I had the part. For free. Stand up guys.

i know you didn't ask about AGV, but what they hey - that's half the fun... ; )

I just bought the AGV TiTech (Rossi Il Laureato replica) and love it. It's very comfortable (a squeeze to get on but once it's on it's great), has GREAT venting and is fairly quiet - I always wear plugs so I'm really not that fussed. It's also nice and light.

My other helmet is an Arai Quantum which is also a great helmet, but it's not getting much use these days...

Here's a pic of the Ti-Tech...sadly tho, mine did not come with the M1 or the fast as $hit little Italian man!

Well if you saw the old Shoei she is wearing...! ;)

I bought the HJC because it is what I could afford at the time, now that I am older, a more mature rider, have better skills, it is time to upgrade. I'd like to pay a little more for some style and increased comfort, especially with wind noise around the ears.

Anyway, I have heard lots of good things about Arai, and I love the style of the XD.

BTW, I have had excellent CS from HJC as well. I e-mailed them about a broken piece to hold the shield on and I had it in the mail the next day. They are cheap, but they still have good service.

Ive had the Arai XD for over a year now, best helmet I've ever owned. The detachable visor actually doesnt catch wind too bad below 65mph.. so good for city stuff and is awsome for blocking the sun at dawn/dusk. I also got the tinted face shield which is much better for day riding and not that bad to see out of in the evenings...

I love the motox style too!!

Anyone have any input on how the smoke / dark smoke / iridium finished face shields are at nite? Trying to get some info before I pull the trigger on one. Hate to buy something that's not practical for nite ridin'.

Oh, I have opinions. The Shoei fits my head like a torture device. Arai might make different shell shapes, but, none of the morons locally carry them. I bought the HJC AC-11. It's been great, not too loud (I wear ear plugs with any helmet if I'm going to be leaving the city limits). The only real complaint after 20k miles is the venting isn't the best, not nearly as good as the HJC Sy-Max (uber quiet too!).

Helmets are like shoes, try a bunch until one fits. I went intending to spend $300 on a helmet and ended up spending $110 because it was the only one that fit.

Arai - Corsair (good vents AND very survivable!)

I used it for "just one day" at Willow Springs and in 4th race, hi-sided.

Head hit the ground first, then the helmet was hit by Johnny Lowery (Ducati 748) and then, the sidecase of my bike landed on it, cracking it and driving my head into the dirt. 3 HARD hits in one crash. Gouges, tire marks, cracks.

I'll stay with Arai, thank you very much.

Dark Smoke = blind as a bat at night, better taking your chances without the shield on the helmet.

Iridium = will work at night but you can not make out small objects on the road (turtles, rocks, armedillos, debris)

Pinklock System = good compramise but you still have to have the inserts. I'd rather carry my clear and tinted shields if I'm gonna have to carry inserts.

Nolan and Schubert make a dark visor system that pops up into the helmet for night riding...works really well, I use it in the winter with reduced daylight hours plus I don't need the venting of my x-11 in the winter.

Fl_a1a - Thanx for the info - I might have to rethink a smoke shield. I'm coming from an enduro and I had an MX helmet with LST goggles, and I haven't been able to find a faceshield with "light sensing technology"

Grimel - I think that a pair of sunglasses might be plan "B". I think I'd rather have a tinted shield tho.

I should also add that the Iridium is my fav shield. It has the widest range as long as the sun is in the sky which works for my commuting needs.

Why not just change to a clear shield when it gets dark?

I just find the tinted shields too restricting. I leave at 6am (still dark) and get home about 4pm (nice and bright). I'm not changing shields once a month much less every day.

Grimel,

I wear sunglasses and have a clear shield. That way if I am out late, the sunglasses go in the pocket and I still can see.

Grimel,

I had a great tinted shield, one of those that are kind of yellowish. Worked great during daylight, but I found that when it got dark it was no good.

Clear shield now with light sensitive changing glasses.

I bought the arai xd cool helmet for city riding for sure but over 80 not to great. If you like haulin azz don't buy it. But like most people say it's how comfortable the helmet is and how noisey that shoud determine your choice.

Problem is FORGETTING the sunglasses when you pull the helmet off or put it on...

...but maybe it's because I'm an old fart and these things happen. : D

How noisy is the XD at speed? Say 70 or so. I am going to try them on tomorrow and see if they even fit me. As long as I can do the occasional freeway speed with it (longer trips I'll use the HJC for now), I'll be happy. But noise is a concern for me.

Hey Slaughter, I am glad I am not the only one who does that!

I wear prescription glasses that have transitions plastic (photo-chromatic). I hate having to carry extra shields when riding, but the problem is that the standard Arai shield block UV rays. Transitions need UV light to change.

Anyone know of a clear shield for an Arai Profile that does not have UV coatings? I figured some cheap aftermarket shield would have that, but Arai does seem to welcome aftermarket part to the world...

I have the Arai Corsair and ride day/night with their light smoke shield.

During the day I have sunglasses (clip on's over my prescription eyeglass) + the light smoke shield. My eyes are pretty sensitive to light and this combo works well for me. No problems seeing at night as well.
