Hi I recently lost the use of my big toe (it got crushed) from a high side...no big deal but it got me thinking. If you visited the ER from a bike crash could you share. What did you pay out of pocket? How long did it take you to heal? Do you still take pills due to the event? What part of the gear was the weakest link? | ||

Good to see another Floridian here! Feb 14th... chick ran a stop sign while talking on her cell phone. I broadsided her with the following results: Broken left knee, broken right femur, all ribs on the left broken, 3 on the right. Back broken in 5 places, right shoulder blade in 6. Left shoulder blade broken in too many pieces for the docs to count. Lacerated Spleen and bruised Kidneys. 2 weeks in the hospital, 1 month before I sat up, two months before I stood up, almost three months before I took my first steps. 7 months off from work, 100K plus in hospital bills. Out of pocket is about 10 grand. And yes, I still have to take the occasional pain med due to severe pain in my right hip. The helmet and jacket held up ok, although the helmet (a HJC) was destroyed when my head made contact with her car. I had the imprint from the forehead padding for about a week! This is my first full week back at work since the wreck. The doctor told me that I was the toughest SOB he had ever seen. He said that he honestly did not think I would have recovered from all the injuries. I have a wonderful wife and a ton of Badwebbers to thank for that awesome progress! Ok, I'll bite June 17th Highside at Nelson Ledges Road course. Broken Hip (Femur) required hemi hip replacement surgery (little more Ti in the bod) Out of pocket: 2K Total Bill: not sure, the bills are still coming in but we are over 20K at this point. Healing time: 6 weeks on crutches - still not 100% but it's getting better every day. I was back on the bike for some practice runs last Wednesday. Gear held up fine, no problems there. Scratched up my Arai, and my Joe Rocket gloves saved me from a severe burn from the front rotor; I ended up with my arm and hand trapped under the front wheel of the Buell, the rotor was burning the plastic nuckle gard on the left glove (It was smoking!)Hand was fine. Right elbow and forarm had a burn through the leather, but no hole in the leather. Great stuff that leather. Still taking Vicodin toward the end of the day when it starts hurtin more. | ||

Lets see, Almost 3 years ago got hit head-on by a car. Shattered pelvis, broken femur, Punctured femoral artery, severed Sciatic nerve. Something like $147k was spent on the crash team etc. The other person's insurance paid for it all. Gear worked great. Without it I have no doubt I'd be dead. Arai helmet, Sidi boots, Joe Rocket Jacket and Pants, Alpine stars gloves. Left leg is still paralyzed. I'm still taking a variety of pills from what I call "My home chemistry set" | ||

Hit from behind by a driver that was high on Heroin. He hit a car the car hit me. He didn't even tap the brakes and was going 55mph plus. The car hit me I flew up and crushed the windshield of the car rolled off hit ground. Ambulance trip to ER. Doctor said I was fine except for a broken finger. My back was out of wack. $500 just for the ride in the Ambulance that was less than 1 mile away from the ER. $500 for the DR. to tell me I'm fine, $2000 to get my back striaghtened out and physical therapy to make it stronger. | ||

My first post!!  (I own an XB9SL and an XB12s, been lurking for about a year.) 2 weeks ago. Buddy on a Honda Shadow, me in the lead. I took a right a turn, he tried to keep up, and viola, he punted my XB9SL right out from under me(Yep, rear ended by another BIKE). Umm, I should of told him that the Shadow in no-way-shape-and-or-form can out handle a Buell. Zero in medical, although very sore and bruised right side. $1100.00 in Buell parts. Low sided to avoid a head on with a cager out of their lane. Told the ER I broke my collarbone and ribs. They said yep I did. One x-ray, 3 minutes with the doc confirming what I already told them. One small bottle of ty-co. Total bill? 1,600 freaking dollars!!!! I told them to shove it and sue me. | ||

I had a front end collision with a cage last September. Total cost was around 7k. I think the CT scans were almost 4k. I didn't break anything or have any life threating injuries. I barely spent 8 hours in the hospital. The only problem I left with was my left eye being a bit fuzzy. Which led to a few visits with an eye specialist. Out of pocket: I paid $400 for the ambulance ride, 60 for 3 eye doctor co-pays and 120 to get my bike out of lock up. | ||

Ran off the BRP, hit a fence. 2 months in the hospital, nine surguries. $450K bill, my insurance covered most of it, I'll pay the rest, if I live long enough. Quit the pills after about a year, they had lost their effect after a few months. The pain remains, I have a collection of canes, now. | ||

Skyguy, I know where you're coming from with that. When I tore up my knee, I sat in the hospital for 6 hours, only to get an x-ray. I knew that it was ligament damage, but there wasn't anything that the hospital ER was going to do for me. They didn't even give me any medication (I'm glad in the end). My crash at the track, I didn't even bother going to the hospital. I had a pretty good idea what was wrong, so I figured I would save myself the time and money. | ||

2 months ago (ish) i was changing lanes when a mustang in front of me slammed on his brakes and changed lanes into me. i made contact with his rear passenger corner, and then the bike and i landed on our left side. he then proceeded to flee the scene. the bike suffered mortal wounds. at first glance i thought it would be ok but parts i hadn't noticed kept adding up. i was wearing a vanson jacket that took heavy scuffing to the arm and shoulder. my jeans about the same. my helmet smacked the ground but not overly hard, i decided to replace it to be safe. i walked away from the accident with a cut on the back of my knee (from my jeans?!) and a fractured index finger missing a fingernail. the only peice of equip i wasn't happy with were my Icon gloves. they deffinately protected my hands but i just don't like them for some reason. i went to the hospital (but not in an ambulance) received x-rays and was tended to by several cute nurses the doctor then reattached my fingernail and wrote prescriptions for a few things. i just got the hospital bill in the mail this week, just under $800. and my health insurance is covering everything but my $5 co-pay on the scripts. i know it's not nearly as bad as accidents others have had. but it's good to have info about all types of accidents i guess. as far as seriousness goes i'd say it was about a 3 out of 10. my bike would disagree and say 10 out of 10. maybe thats where the gear helps out. | ||

Back in April I was on a friend of mines Ninja 636 (hes still a friend) and a Jerk in a Land rover pulled out in front of me and I lowsided, lucky I got around him and into the grass on the side of the road before it slid out but I broke my shoulder in the process. I think im at about 3k between the ER and Orthopedic for x-rays and cat scans, took about 6 weeks to fully heal but it still pops alot and I can tell you when its goin to rain. side note...cost me about $1200 to fix his bike too. | ||

Shattered clavicle, 2 surgeries, 3 screws (only two remain), some residual pain when lifting weights (shoulder press mostly), prescribed oxycodone but refused to take any of it (no, I won't sell it to any of you). $0. Isn't Tricare grand? To bad it also comes with military doctors who didn't seem very concerned with keeping the scarring down and didn't think that rehab was necessary. Was wearing sneakers, one was thrown about a hundred feet down the road. Foot was bruised but not broken. Right glove (can’t even remember the brand) shredded taking a chunk out of my palm. It fully healed and the scar is hardly noticeable. Left shoulder of Joe Rocket Textile jacket ripped at a seam but did not come apart. I still have it hanging in my closet as a reminder. I now wear leather. Face shield shattered but the rest of the helmet (KBC) held together. Passer by that stopped to help reported that the bike flipped over ‘about a dozen times.’ Who wants to vote on if it was totaled? | ||

broken ribs, punctured lung, banged up all around from cartwheeling down the track from another racer hitting me from behind. emergency room was 5 hours, 2 sets of xrays, 2 CT scans, IV drugs, IV fluids, IV dye for CT scan, and tylenol to take and vicodin to take home = $7000. i owe $75 for all that. that does NOT include (so far) the additional insurance covered costs of: 5 additional doc visits, 3 more sets of chest x rays, physical therapy, 5 bottles of prescription drugs of course, there's been some costs for me, copays and such for the insurance, but really quite minimal. other personal costs - super vitamins, super calcium pills, dog walker twice a day, my father flying in for 9 days, rides/cabs to work. Note to self, ER costs have went waaaaaaay up since my ER files were collected - STAY OUT. I made at least 1 trip to the ER every 3 months for about 9yrs. I don't think the TOTAL bill was over $150,000. | ||

Just FYI.... you CAN bargain with hospital bills. Medicare is the gold standard for what all bills are based on, as you can probably figure medicare pays WAYYYYYYYY below what the hospital charges. There are ways to determine what medicare pays for each and every item on your hospital bill, if you go into the billing department and POLITELY bargain with them, based on medicare reimbursement numbers, you can almost always get a better price for your out of pocket expenses. Your best bet is to be nice, speak with someone of authority and tell them, I know what medicare pays for these items, I am willing to pay 10% more, for example and more often than not, they'd be more than happy to take that much and write off anything else.. Happy haggling!!! PS..I've worked in hospitals almost my entire adult life...these things I know.. | ||

I NEVER visit an Emergency Room, if I can drive (call a cab??) to another medical provider. What do they call it? Triage System, means if you aren't DYING, you wait and wait and wait some more. I am a professional at this point, so if I can make do under my own power, I will, visit Dr. first or the specialist and skip all the expensive "middle-men." | ||

After my stay in the hospital, and the constant doctors appointments I still go to, I'm very glad I did my time in the Navy. Since It's impossible to get medical coverage with a "pre-existing condition" My non-service related disability pension from the VA and SSDI have been life savers while I'm trying to get my life back in order. Medical bills can very quickly become overwhelming if you don't have insurance coverage, or some sort of other safety net. They add up so quickly! | ||

Lady pulled out in front of me last Sat. (7-29-06) I was doing about 45-50. I hit the rear brake it started to lock up, so I hit the front (hit it too hard! only 2 days I had it, wasnt use to the MASSIVE front brake) it launched me off the seat. My head hit first (split the HJC helmet I just bought that morning in the back) then rolled to my back (bad road rash on the lower part) then over to my right arm, again bad road rash and broke it. $75 ER visit, $30 for pills, and 2 visits to the bone doctor $60. Its been a week and its not so bad, I can move my arm more and it didnt really hurt at all. As for the bike (2006 XB12R) R.I.P. only had 74 miles on it! I am still waiting to hear from the insurance co, but I am pretty sure they are going to total it  | ||

Arai makes the best helmet, no doubt SIDI when comes to boots, Alpine Stars on the gloves beyond a doubt. Jacket and pant's are just what I like the looks of. I am super anal about the fit and construction of my gear though, I know there is less expensive stuff out there that will work also.} | ||

not on my bike but in my 04 jeep wrangler unlimited.i was t-boned on my way to work on a sunday morning. broke 4 ribs,( left side) spleen was beat up and bleeding. cuts on my face from diver side window hitting me.right shin cut open from the transfer case shiffer.brused lung and hip.the look of my coworkers having to cut me out of my car was priceless. 2 nights in icu 4 night in trauma ward. $45,000.00 for all of that and i didnt even need a stitch! insurance took care of everything except the helicopter ride. |
