Good Grief.....
Remember the TV show "McHales Navy" ? They called the Japanese "The Nips". But hey, they just blew the crap outta Pearl Harbor....I'd be pissed off too.

When I was a kid we called Japanese bikes "Jap bikes" and if a fellow rider had a junky "Jap bike" we called it "Jap crap".

Gotta go pickup my sheet and hood at the cleaners.
Cheers !

I call Jap bikes "Jap bikes"

I call Japanese people "Japanese people"

I'm so tired of these topics.

Being of Japanese-American dissent let me put my two cents worth in. For those of you who think it's just a contraction and not a slur, I may agree to a point...it's all in the context of what's being said. If someone wanted to post about a Hondazukiyamakawaski, but called it Jap bike because he didn't want to name every specific make, I'd agree. It's being used as a contraction....But trust me, if any one ever directed that at myself, my mother, or my family, it becomes a slur and I wouldn't take to kindly to that.

Hey no_rice...you're missing out! I LOVE rice...white rice, brown rice, wild rice, spanish rice, rice pilaf, risotto.....

Honestly the reason they called them "Nips" on McHale's Navy is because the people that live in what we call Japan, call the Island Nippon.

Ever wonder why all the electronic parts on bikes have names like Nippon Denso (ND) or Nippon Seiki? It's because the round eyes got the name wrong.

They marked it on a map and that was that, we re-named them. Kind of like that Italian map maker Amerigo Vesucci's claim to fame.

He named an entire continent he'd never seen after himself. So now most of us on the board are Americans because of his claim on fame.

Oh, one of the other things I've encountered being half Japanese, was the amazing amounts of snappy comebacks I came up with when being teased. I grew up in a small town in Massachusetts where I made up a third of the Asian population in my school. One of my best comebacks after being called a stupid Chink was, "I'm not Chinese, I'm a Jap, get your effin' slurs right!"

Oh crap...I almost forgot the best use of Jap-bike EVER!! We had a very large 3 day group ride leaving on a Friday morning. Should've saw the looks we got leaving the HD dealership when this fleet of Buells pulled out of the parking lot. Ferris and Al Lighton were there amongst a bunch of other badwebbers...Anyways, we're about three or four blocks away from the dealership when some redneck in a Dodge Ram pickup complete with requisite HD bar and shield in the back window pulls up next to us. You know what this dumb ass says to us? "Why you riding that Jap bike...buy a real bike and get a Harley!" This stupid mutha couldn't even recognize the thunder of our very American made v-twin...just that fact that they looked too...ummmm...fast? 10 bucks says he didn't even have a bike!

HA! That's a good one, Hattori. I haven't had that yet, but usually a blip of my throttle at a stoplight quiets anyone doubting. Or I just point to the "American Motorcycles" emblem on the airbox. Man I love my bike.

I gotta chime in here.
As a Japanese-American, I do find the word "jap" in any connotation to be offensive. I know many of you aren't using the term in a derogatory manner and mean no harm, but a racial slur is a slur, no matter what your intention.
And please don't give me that "Pearl Harbor payback" excuse. World War II ended over 60 years ago. You can stop hating the Japanese now.
I'm not going to insist everyone stop using that word "jap" from now on, nor will I be morally offended if you do. I am far from being politically correct. You have your own free will, do what you like. I just know what my own opinion is of those who callously toss out racial slurs. But again, I know many of you honestly mean no harm.
Try this: the next time you want to say "jap bike," substitute "nigger bike" instead. Now, maybe you'll know how it sounds to me.
Apologies to any I offended.

Kids, can't we all play nicely together in our sandbox known as BadWeB? Po-tay-to, Po-tat-to... It's all a matter of perspective. Those who believe it to be a racial slur, don't use it at all. Those who believe it to be a contraction, use it to describe bikes, not people. Those who use to to describe people as a racial epithet, that's not nice, and your mother probably wouldn't like hearing it come out of your mouth. However, I have a hard time believing that many members of BadWeB are that insensitive to use racial slurs with malicious intent. Those who use the term "Jap Bikes" do not mean harm by it, and I would think that most of us are mature and understanding of each other and would understand that it is simply an abbreviation not a racially motivated insult.

You brainwashed PC hand wringing weenies should trade in your Buell for a bike helmet, a ten speed and some of those spandex shorts with the built in maxi-pad. I know ... my comment is neither sensitive or constructive ... and I don't give a damn.

Anyone hear Carlos Mencias take on your freddom of speech and the first amendment? In his words , "stop bieng such a pu5sy" Many Americans have died so we can all have freedom of speech. Its motorcycle culture, we say "jap bike" because thats were they come from, it's kinda like two black people referring to each other as "nigga". STOP THE MADNESS I wish someone would kindly escort this thread out of the "BadWeb sandbox"

I personally don't write down 'Jap' bike anywhere. As one can't see the authors face, it's easy for the casual reader to misinterpret the context of the words meaning, outside of describing the motorcycles origin.

In real life I am sometimes guilty of the term, but would be careful where and when to use it if I thought it may cause offense of a racial nature.

That said, Buells might be engineering marvels in some aspects, but the Jap's know how to screw production bikes together and keep them reliable.

Given the mass production numbers, one would expect Buell to be able to bring their products to market with at least the same amount of consistent reliability as a mainstream mass producing manufacturer, if not more so.

The Japanese might have killed off the British bike industry, but there's a very valid reason for that, but without the Japanese I doubt the whole worlds motorcycling market would be where it is today. There investment in racing I doubt could be matched relatively speaking if we were to go back to the middle (give or take a decade or two) part of the last century.

Now this thread is really alight, and with some balance !

That reminds me of a girlfriend I had from Czechoslovakia. We were madly in love but my mother couldn't stand her for some reason.

When I asked her why, she said, "Son, I don't accept Czechs".

Vanvideo....

Pa-leeze. I can't believe you're truly that sensitive. How can you find the abbreviation of a country's name offensive? That's just looking for something to cry about. Now if we were all runnin' around calling them "slanty bikes", I could see your point. But this has nothing to do with race. It's like saying "US" instead of "United States of America", and to get bent over something like that is utterly ridiculous. Think the Triumph crowd gets angry if someone mentions a Brit bike?

Y'know what? I'm white. Painfully, blindingly white. I think I'm gonna' get insulted whenever someone mentions the color. White rice? The hell you say! White wine? Oh no you just didn't!

Sheesh...
