*JAP* bike- seems to be a favorite. I get the pain of the past. We can start with the Native American Indians, British, Spanish, Germans, Italians- heck pretty much anyone race of people in the world to slander with a derogatory name because of wars/ past/ etc... But why does this forum routinely take the high road on "family friendly" and absolutely never make mention of the abrasive nature of the slur- *Jap* ?? |

I used that term untill a few weeks ago. I was'nt thinking of it as a slur untill my wife had me look it up in the dictionary. It is a slur just like all the others, and not acceptable to use. |

there is no nationality that would be shortened to Jew either. The people using the term "Jap Bike" are not trying to use it as a slur for the most part. I agree it is used in a derogatory sense at times, but that is in the context of non-american Not as an attempt to degrade anyones ethnicity. Having said that I will do my part to refrain from using the term in the future to spare the feelings of those it hurts, and I offer my sincere apology to those people. |

JAP: Named for James (John) Alfred Prestwich, who founded his own company at age 20, in 1894. Designed his first motorcycle engine in 1901, but it wasn't produced until 1903. Made the first overhead-valve V-twin in 1906. Built a 660cc three-cylinder engine for Dennell. Val Page worked for JAP before going to Ariel. JAP patented a desmodromic valve design in 1923.Very successful after WW1 supplying engines for many manufacturers, but as more companies developed their own engines, JAP relied heavily on industrial engine sales in the 1930s. Merged with Villiers in 1957. Unless I'm mistaken, Brough Superiors were powered by JAP engines, along with many other classic British bikes... |

"Jap bike" is really just a contraction of "Japanese bike". "Jap", when used by any Westerner younger than 70, is not intended to be offensive. In any event, most Japanese people (who don't know much about the second world war nowadays) are hardly likely to read/interpret anything offensive in the term "Jap bike". I think "rice burner" or "ricer" are derogatory however - especially as they are generally intended to be by those who use these terms. |

Hell, Most of the guys I ride with are Asians from Queens and Bkln and they call their bikes Jap bikes and rice burners. What's funny is when we got pulled over once, the cops were gonna give them tickets but not the only 2 "round-eye's" in the group...made for a very uncomfortable situation till one of the Asians produced his Badge(NYCPD) and the cop let us all go! Okay, Since those of Japanese heritage find it offensive I won't use the word. In fact I 've not used it in some years because of that. But I want to know who is going to work on getting all those J. A. Prestwich engines remarked? This beauty needs sanitizing real bad! Jack (Message edited by jackbequick on July 24, 2006) (Message edited by jackbequick on July 24, 2006) |

I get the reply points If you knew me- which no one does on our forum..., I am the furthest away from PC My opinion it is derogatory. And it is not to Jewish as is Jew. I worked for a Japanese company in the past, and made some good friends there. The word Jap is very offensive. I just brought it up for discussion/ awareness> not to complain on and on about it- done |

I'm not personally worried about Japanese people being offended. Offended persons should file a grievance at the office located at the bottom of Pearl Harbor. |

I guess it really depends on how the term Jap is used. In most cases it's just simply used as a short version of Japanese with no racist undertones. I have to say as for a racial slurs go, Jap really isn't that bad. Even the term Nip is just short for Nippon. I'm half Jap btw. |

With all the things going on in the world and with motorcycles, etc... We are discussing someones feelings. What a waste. Find something worthwhile to occupy yourself with. I think I'll go change my oil, should I use synthetic or mineral based oil? HAHAHA.... |
