If you were going to be rebuilding an xb9 motor, what enhancements would you do on a budget to see the greatest performance gains? (no easy answers like: big bore kits!)

Hi-flo heads (port/polish), cams, race kit, maybe change gearing if you'd like. When you say "budget" that throws a wrench into things, no pun intended! But, come on.... What kind of "budget" are we talking here, nothings cheap nowadays!

Why are you rebuilding it? Was some portion of it damaged?

...it is relevant - if, for example, the pistons/jugs were damaged and you would have to pay to replace them anyway, suddenly a big bore kit is not as much money over and above the replacement cost. ; )

Okay, not quite as simple a question as I though.

Background: I bought a repoed xb9r w/ 23k on it. It runs fine and is not leaking from any location that I can find other than an excessive amount on the air filter. It doesn’t look like it’s been puking any more than any other v-twin, it just looks like the filter has never been changed or cleaned. The moral is that it gives me some kind of idea as to how the previous owner maintained it.

Registering and insuring it for one year in DC would cost more than I bought the bike for, and I also have an S1. My plan was to take some time and build the bike up for next season (I’m hoping to move by then). I was just going to replace gaskets, seals, bearings, and anything else that looked excessively worn. I’m not looking to build a race bike; I just figured it would be a waist not to do something while I’m in there.

I’m sure people are still going to ask for a dollar value for the budget. Let’s say no more than 1k, but the cheaper the better. I already have a list of other things I need for this bike that is adding up fast.

re-build on a budget:

Upgrade the oil pump drive gear, and big end bearing while it's apart.

port job and serdi valve job on heads. On an XB9 maybe shave a few thousands off of the heads to bump up compression ratio.
for a 12, I'd use the high dome 9 pistons instead of the 12's flat tops.

For cams I'd stick with stock, or Revolution Performance's RP610 cams. Hotter, but still streetable.

That's about all I'd do for a budget build that I wanted to use on the street, or even lower level racing.
