ref 9R, stock dunlop (not the original), about three to four thousand miles of use

I have several spots on the rear tire where something is coming thru. Banding? I dunno. Here is a picture of the worst of it:

What is this? I've not even worn the tread down to the indicator bumps yet...

That sure is a lot of tread left for Dunlops with 3-4K on them. Mine only lasted about 2500. I looks like something cut your tire. With as much tread as you have left I wouldn't worry to much about it. I could be wrong.

Don't buy tires from Harley, or Buell dealers! My buddy has an '06 12R and the tires since new, have ply cord showing in the rain grooves. I don't know if Dunlop is pawning off 2nds to Harley dealers, or what, but something's not right.

You need to establish how deep it goes. If its more than just a surface "scratch" , bin it and get a new one!!!
Dont wait 4 it to bite ya..........

It doesn't seem to be a cut or scratch - it looks more like something pushing thru to the surface. There is one that runs on the other side of the tire as well - you can see it in the pic if you look carefully.

I'll be taking it to someone to look at it, just wondered if anyone else knows anything in the meantime...

Just dump the tire and replace it. Would hate to lay down your bike if it's some thing you could have prevented for a couple hundred bucks.

Don't do it!! Unless you want to spend at least 140.00 more for that tire (incl. mount and balance)than you will pay anywhere else.

Don't buy another dunlop for that bike!

Unless the new qualifiers are better than previous offerings.

Get that tire off of your bike!

I had a Dunlop do something similar to that except it was from edge to edge on a couple of spots around the tire. I replaced them with Pilot Powers and couldnt be happer its like a whole different bike.

Jon - can you point me to any specs on the Qualifier's? Mileage rating, etc. I know- hit the Search button. Will do. But if you have anything to add? Thanks.

the qualifiers are not a "mileage" tire. they are a sticky sporting tire.
Along the lines of the Metzler M3, Pirelli Diablo corsa, or pilot Race.
