Was riding the other day and got two signals from other riders. I wasn't exactly sure if I took them the right way.

Ist was from on coming rider: index finger and thumb forming a circle and three fingers spread out. Does this mean i should switch to low beam? (did have low beam on).

2nd was from a rider passing me: while passing he stuck his foot out towards me. He was say hello, right?

I ride in NY, in Bear Mountain area.

normally a foot out would be to draw your attention to a road hazard. In your line of travel on that side.
On the gas till you see god, then BRAKE!

I think the first guy was saying you have an awesome bike. The second guy was just a goon and his foot slipped off the peg : )

Maybe the first guy was telling me I have a great bike or maybe he was calling me an a**hole. That hand gesture will get you a ticket on the autobon.

The foot should have been to say there may be a road hazard in your lane.

If you get someone that taps the top of their helmet they're generally telling you there's an officer ahead.

The other sign... I'd say he just liked the bike.

Our crew will point with our hand when passing on the right when we are going to merge in front of you and will poke a foot out when passing on the left when we are merging..

1st = Nice Day, How you doin'

2nd = We use this as an acknowledgment gesture, or a thankyou if someone pulls over to let you pass. This is so your hand stays on the controls. Call it a 'Foot Wave'!

I've seen the foot wave use to warn the bikers behind that they're switching lanes or something like that. I've only seen it once or twice.

When a women sticks her left hand out with palms facing down, fingers spread and shaking her hand at the same time, she's drying her fingernails.

If heading up to the top I would have asked him what the and gotten an answer. By the way a few of us from the area ride there very often, will be up there Sunday.

Most hand signs are for group riding or riding with others and are used to signal some common messages. As always, no matter how large your group, all signals coming form the ride leader (left hand sign only) should be copied by all riders so everyone gets the message. Some signals change depending on whom you're riding with. It's a good thing, when riding with a new group to get a run down on what they mean..

In my cruiser group, tapping the top of your lid means 'Just me' usually when you're pulling out of the group and heading off alone - the reason is to keep the TG from following you to find out what the problem is.

The MC's use the helmet tap to mean LEO, but in our group, you could signal that just by pointing to one of about 2 dozen riders..

Some of the standard signs are as follows - all hand signs unless indicated are given with only the LEFT hand -

A foot of hand (left or right) point toward the ground means - Hazard in the road on that side.

Point to tank means - Gas.

The 'Jammin' pinky/thumb wiggle above the head means - Ride Stagger.

Point to the sky - Single File

Palm down wave - Slow Down, palm up wave - Speed Up..

Showing palm flat to the rider behind - Stop Ahead.

Open fingers to clenched fist above head (usually pumping arm at the same time) means - Close up the spacing of the group.

Hand signals for turns mean that direction turn coming up OR lane change (signals passed back for TG to secure the lane indicated) Certain groups have additional signs for control of the group during lane changes.

'Thumb to mouth' with a closed fist (like your holding a cup or bottle) - Thirsty.

Rub or point to stomach - Hungry

Fingers open and closed (like a mouth opening and closing) - Turn signal is on.

Point to (on an XB) air box on traditional bikes, gas tank - Need fuel.

Tap tail section while either in front of or next too other bike - Follow me.

RIGHT HAND, fist held at waist level horizontal to ground - Block intersection / number of fingers displayed prior to this is how many bikes needed for the block.

RIGHT HAND, held flat like a karate chop - pass through intersection, no blocks.

RIGHT HAND, Karate Chop from shoulder towards your front tire - Run Ahead (usually means to check the road ahead and report back - or in conjunction with a block sign to send the blockers ahead to establish the control of the intersection ahead of the pack)

There are a few others, but I think the covers a good number of the ones used in a group situation.

Recently after smoking a guy on a japanese I-4, I saw him raise his hand with only the middle finger extended.

I took this to mean "you're number one and you have a sweet bike"

Is that the correct interpretation?

I thought I was the only one signaling "Green Cloud" to the people behind me.

good links harleystuff. that's good info for group riding.

living in NC all the cruiser guys would wave and the sport bike riders wouldn't. moved recently to MO. sport bike riders wave more than the cruiser crowd does. kinda weird. unless riding in a group then cruisers will wave.

Y'all forgot the shaking head around franticly while smacking helmet signal,

I believe that means "!@#$%! There's a bee in my helmet!!!"
