Just was wondering if anyone has done this service their self or if they recommend the dealer doing this? I can't see spending 300bucks for just about everything I can do according to the Service Manual.. Your thoughts are needed..

Dealer. As easy as the stuff seems to do, it'll be a good opportunity to gage your dealer should you ever need to get warranty work or more complicated repairs done. It only took my dealer one day. I dropped it off the night before and was able to pick it up the next day. This is the way it SHOULD go for everyone. Sadly, this is not the case. Like I said, this is a good opportunity to gage your stealer...err..ummm dealer, I meant dealer.

Yea, you might save some cash doing it yourself, but it's money well spent to figure out what kind of dealer support your going to get should you need them for something else in the future.

Also, some dealers say that the 1000 mile service must be completed by the dealer in order to keep from voiding the warranty. I've heard arguments to both sides of that.
Just giving you a heads up.

I was also thinking that too but wanted to see if everyone else took their bike to the dealer.

I always do my own. I see it as an opportunity to "get to know" my bike, and I always learn something new. I can also be sure it's done right...

For three hundred dollar you can buy everything u need to do the rest of the work yourself over the life of the bike. I just order everything from daves. I had to order the service manuel, gaskets and filter, and Techno software. See 1000 mile service in the appleton sponsors section.

If Daves is correct, ( that would not be a real big surprise), I should say you already learned all you need to know about this particular dealer's service policies.

I just ordered the parts and service manuals from Daves, got some Mobil One and an oil filter from Walmarts, and got to bond with my bicycle.

I guess I might be called old school, but I get nervous when anyone else is " kissing my girlfriend": I just like to do it myself, know the job is going to be done right, know what I mean?

Do you own. It's easy and it s a good way to learn about your motorcycle.

My dealer actually caused some damage at the 1000 mile service. Now the only thing I go to the dealer for it to reset the TPS.

I just called a different dealer (newer dealer) and they were very nice. Have a buell mechanic and will only charge me 199. I am using my own Amsoil and filter.. I think I will take it to them so I can "Get to know" them for warranty work?? After this I will do it all my self.. Does that sound reasonably priced??

I don't know about the warranty issues, so I can't help you there. I'm scheduled to drop mine off tomorrow at 9 am and they said I can pick it up anytime after 2. I'm paying $145.00.

Talk to the Service Manager and then call BUELL SERVICE ... This way you get to check out if the SERVICE MANAGER will "BUELLschitte" you by what BUELL SERVICE says ...

Of course buy the supplies from the Dealer and keep the receipts for proof ...

Buy a service manual and do it yourself. Even if you make a mistake, in the long run you will be better off.

Buellistic, what should one ask when they call Buell Service? As I'll be at 1,000 miles in a few weeks and I don't mind paying the money for it but why call Buell Service and what to ask them and whatnot?

Ditto the 95% majority. Please do this yourself if you're comfortable with the maintenance and time required. Plus, as with ANY automobile/bike, buy the service manual because it'll point you in the right direction if you have any questions. (loaded with information too)

I don't have a local dealer, there is a service dept nearby that can service Buells, but they are booked a month out. Looks like its Self-service for me!

can anyone give an authoritative answer on the warranty issue? Does servicing yourself jeopardize the warranty?

I'd love to service myself, but it isn't worth being denied warranty service later, especially since I got the 4 year extended warranty with the purchase...

I'm due for the 5K service soon, and I'd love to save some dough!

I'm not completely certain on this, but I believe it falls in with the Magnuson-Moss warranty act. Requiring you to have the bike serviced at a dealer would be considered a tie-in sale, which is not allowed.

However, if you make a mistake while servicing your own bike and cause a problem, that problem will not be covered by the factory warranty. For what it's worth, if your dealer makes a mistake that causes a problem, that won't be covered by the factory warranty either. Repairing a mistake made by the dealer will be the responsibility of the dealer.


As for who should do the 1st service, depends on the rider and the dealer. Basically, if you think you will do a better job than the dealer will, go for it. I had my 1st service done by the dealer, but only because I knew the tech that would be doing the job and trusted him. I've been doing my own services ever since.

Thanks all. I already have a service manual but I guess I am being a little lazy.. I like the dealer so far so I will see what happens...Dont' they check the valves as well.. That is the only thing I am kinda leary about checking..

BUELLs have HYD. tappets which is a maintance free system, "BUT" make sure you change the filter/oil every 3K with Syn3 ...

For the first service, I am taking it to the dealer. They agreed to change my plugs along with the service for no extra charge except for parts. I don't have the service manuel yet either, so I don't have specs on belt tension and a few other things.

Nope. Hydraulic lifters mean no valve adjustments ever. (we need a clipart that says "I heart pushrods")

The service manual should list everything that needs to be done during the 1k service. I *think* the TPS reset is the only part the average DIY'er can't do at home.

break it or you wear it out, just replace it ...

That's nice to know. I had the local dealer tell me they wouldn't change my fluids in the Buell because they didn't have the service manuels for the Buells, which include belt tensioning. I should go back and smack the woman in her mouth for that one. She was just pulling shit out of her ass. She should have just told me no and not made crap up.

getting my 1st schedualed service in 3 weeks, and its $215, minus the primary gaskets and fluid because i just had warrenty work done. So it should run about $175. They told me it would take 3 hours and they will give me a demo bike to ride while they work on it!!
