I installed one on my X and had the TPS reset just like I was supposed to do. I am also using the Jardine pipe and K&N filter. Until I installed the ECM my bike ran great. Now it takes two or three times cranking it up before it will set and idle. Even after it warms up it does not idle as good as it used to. Seems to run fine out on the road but not much different then before. The engine seems to be making a little more valve noise also. Thought about trying a different heat range of plug since the ECM lets more fuel into the combustion chamber. Any thoughts on this?

It sounds like your TPS wasn't reset properly or your idle is set too low. I recently (like two days ago) reset my TPS (with the Directlink) at least 4 times until I got it right. My bike acted just like yours until I put some reverse twist to the throttle while setting the TPS. This was the first time I've ever done this, so you can say I was on the learning curve.

I thought about setting the idle up and see what happens.

Mountainrider,
I have the same bike and the same setup, except I have the D&D exhaust. Before I put on the Race ECM it popped quite a bit on decelleration. Once I put the Race ECM on, the popping pretty much went away. However, ever since the Race ECM has been on (8,000 miles) the bike has been a little bit quirkier, especially at start up. In colder weather I HAVE to give it some gas to keep it running at start up. And likewise, it doesn't idle very well until fully warmed up. Once warmed up, the bike runs and idles PERFECTLY!

It sounds like you and I are in the same boat...

Drake

I'll break the trend.
Installed mine a few weeks ago, the OPS pipe, open airbox I have been running for a while now.
Reset the TPS and it runs great!
Donutclub has it right, you have to blip the throttle when you reset the TPS on Directlink.

Where do you get a direct link, and how much does it cost? Does it come with instructions on how to reset the TPS?

You can buy it from American Sport Bike for around $358. It comes with a user manual that allows you to change your fuel injection mapping and or reset TPS and the AFV.

If your just looking to reset the TPS, you can pick the the VDSTS package for $195.

I have about 10,000 miles on my Race ECM equipped 2003 XB9S.
I have used it with several setups and it has always worked fine: none of the problems that others reported.

First I used the K+N air cleaner and the Buell Race Can, then I switched to the Original Drummer, and just recently opened up the air box.

Through it all, it has always started up on the first try, idles smoothly, runs fine hot or cold, and just pops a little on decel.
I would say that yours isn't set just right, Mountain.

The difference here is the fact that it is an 05 XB9. I have only heard of this issue on 05 XB9's, which has a different Race ECM than the 03's.

Sounds like a TPS problem to me, most likely not set right. Donutclub had it correct..to set your TPS you must apply reverse pressure to the throttle while the key is out and off. You'll kinda hear a clic or snap noise when you have bottomed out, just don't go to far or you'll be doin this There is one other possibility, your static timing could be off. I reset mine, but DL and VDSTS will not help you here. The only way this can be set is by digital technician from harley/buell

I had the Harley dealership set the TPS , I would think they would know what they are doing. But anyone can make a mistake. I did set the idle up and it is a lot better now. Cranks right up and idles. Plus my corner speed will improve since the bike will not come to complete stop when I crack the throttle.

Mntrider....Mine idles differently now.....When I first start it it seems slightly high, but after a minute or two it runs like normal. Did you run it around 4-5k rpms for 10 mins or so? The ECM needs to "learn" your exhaust setup. Mine ran kinda rough until a constant run down Hwy 78 to the "V" around 4500 rmp. Now its like a Demon Buell. Throttle responce is amazing. I watched SMHD/Buell set my TPS and they do know what they are doing. The tech showed me how the digital tech works. Pretty neat.

Lets see did I run it at high RPMs ? LOL!!!!!!!

Just teasing.

I plan on riding tomorrow with a couple of fast guys and by the end of the day it should smooth out if it is going to. The bike is really rich at cold idle. It is a lot better with the idle set up and I like it in the corners better also.
