I was able to reset the TPS with the old scan tool. Did they not have this tool or is there a supposded new one for the bolt?

Fasteddie, I have not posted here in a while. Since Court helped me with a shock problem on a 98s3, but if you need a good dealer in Atlanta goto Earl Small's. They put my race kit on and did the 1st service in about 3hours while I waited. The side stand was taken care of on my lunch hour.

I'm not writing off Thunder Creek. They seem like nice people. I'll assume it was a breakdown in communication that when I scheduled the TPS reset they didn't know they didn't have the right machine. They did manage to get one and get the job done.

As to the rest, they said they'd do the rotor bushings and the sidestand recall prior to my picking the bike up if the parts came in, or while I waited at a later date.

Though Chattanooga is about 2 hours from my house, it's US 64 which is GORGEOUS and I'm always looking for an excuse to ride!

Image is on the way back with da wife AND the mother-in-law in tow!

Good idea. I've been burdened with the "behind the scenes" facts (becoming a bit of an oddity on the internet :) ) and you are wise not to write them off.....smart move and enjoy the XB!

Fasteddieb Don't get me wrong, I was not saying to write anyone off, just some information if you needed it. I am very familiar with Thunder Creek and several other shops that are around. I have not been an active poster on this or any other board but I have gotten a lot of valuable information from here. I did work with the blast for a year or so in classes but the XB is a great bike and the only thing to do is change the fluids and ride, what a concept.

Thanks for the muffler compliment. I did not put any outlet tubes on it, only the single outlet hole. There are no brackets for the chin spoiler, either. I installed it on the bike last night and went for a ride, seems to work just fine. Not too much louder than stock (No neighbors woke up), and a nice tone (to my ear). Power-wise, the engine seems to rev more freely (whatever that means). Tonight I shall remove the rubber airbox snorkel that passes through the frame, since that is a restriction, and clean up a few details.

BYKERGEEK: was whoever bought your Latus muffler here on the board? Just wondering if they installed it and what their opinion of the sound is.

EVERYONE!: I heard TwoBuells bike with the full race kit and the fetal pig actually sounded good. Much better than the one I heard this summer which was barely louder than stock. Does adding the ECM and air filter change the sound that much?

paroyboy: I think so but I don't know his bbs name. I had listed it here and on ATC. It shipped to Philly so it probably isn't too far away. He already had the Buell race muffler so I can't wait to hear a same bike/same owner comparison.

Hey guys,
I went ahead and put on the race kit last night. I like it, sound is good too. Stock sound was a dissapointment to me, but now it has a good healthy rumble at idle and good bark at speed too, but not too loud.

I needed the TPS reset big time, the bike wasn't happy after just swapping out the parts. The guys at Glendale Buell were really cool about getting it dialed in just right, thanks Matty and Daniel! Spur of the moment too.

After the TPS and idle reset the bike was good to go. My initial impessions are, no loss in bottom to mid range power but not much gain to be felt either. Just before, and above 5K rpm is where the kit wakes up this motor, it also feels like it gets there quicker too. I also noticed a difference in the compression braking. The stock unit would let the rpm's come down gradually if you rolled off the throttle, now they come down quicker but with some occasional popping out of the exhaust. Not backfiring just that popping you get with a more open exhaust.

The rpm range may seem high to some, but like most the things Matty has been telling me and I'm finding to be true, the XB mill likes to be spun up higher and is happy there.

I also weighed the race kit parts and then the stock parts after removal. Weight difference is 4.5 lbs less with the kit installed. At least according to my unsophisicated equipment (bathroom scale).

Pictures of alumimum muffler on XB9R.

Muffler weighs 4.1 lbs (10 lb weight savings over stock). Internally, it is a loose copy of the HD Race Kit muffler.

Sound is maybe(?) not as loud as an HD Race Kit muffler, but something at that level. Has a nice low rumble to it.

Has anyone modified the guts of the oem muffler yet? I'd love to see some pics. Hopefully, Santa will bring that mig welder for Xmas and I can try it! :)
The other thing I have been thinking of was more traditional; bend up a SS pipe to exit and come up below the pasenger pegs so I can mount a conventional CF or Ti slip-on.

I do not figure it will last all that long, but I did want to try the 4.1 lb weight. Hey, I made it myself, if it breaks I shall modify it to last longer. I have a mere 15 miles on it so far.

..Here in the UK a Buell specialist is offering a Wileyco race exhaust for the Firebolt, Anyone have any knowledge of this item? Whats the general opinion of Wileyco products?

Just got a notice from Buell. They are changing the finish on the race muffler. Ceramic coated, for a smoother finish. Doesn't say if it will be the same color or not. I'm guessing the same color.

I've got the new muffler on my bike now. It has a slightly different Part Number, they added a "Y" to the PN, if I remember correctly.

The finish and color are a little different. The previous ones a were a little 'brighter' in color than the rest of the silver on the bike (ie: the frame and swingarm) and had a more sparkly finish, . The new ones match the frame and swingarm perfectly in both color and finish.

The old ones also had a plate rivetted to them that said "For off road use only". Great attention getters for our friendly LEO's. The new ones don't have the plate on them. Now those words are obscurely stamped on the underside. Thank you Buell!

Ya, Timbo's on the right track. We added "a" to the end of the part number. The old kits we be sold off and the new ones are a joy to see. Not only because they look a million times better, but because Buell responded so quickly to consumer concerns about the finish of the product.

Here I got this kewl looking NEW Buell with a rusting muffler.

I suppose I'll have to find an aftermarket place to get it re-coated.

By then I'll have invested nearly the price of the D&D unit.

Early BMW K1200RS's came with a brushed aluminum muffler cover that was very hard to keep clean and generated a lot of complaints.

BMW switched to a polished cover and was willing to replace the earlier cover with the updated one at no cost to owners.

If there is a cosmetic flaw with the early race kit mufflers, Buell should consider doing the same, IMHO. Mine hasn't been on the road enough to show any rust - in fact, I may have the newer model. I don't recall an "off-road-only" label.

Yuck!

If mine does that I'll have a serious discussion with Buell.

From my experience so far, I'd think the dealer that supplied it for me would go to bat for me.

There is such a thing as an "implied warranty of fitness for purpose" - and one would assume one of the purposes of a muffler is to withstand the elements.
