Will this work? I need more wind protection and don't want to sell the bike to get it.

I put a Royal Enfield replica fly screen on my XB9S, looks great and works. It can be seen in the Knowledge Vault section. Look for fly screens. Total cost about $70.00.

Harley_jethro and friends were doing this and said the existing Uly windscreen holes for the pins do not line up to the lightning's fairing (too wide). They started machining parts to make an add-on; but, haven't heard/seen anything else about it. I'd consider just drilling additional holes..
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/158849.html

Bcordb3 fitted a Royal Enfield 1957 replica flyscreen here:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/142429.html

If you wanna get nutz, I understand you can bolt the Uly instrument modules/brackets to a lightning which gets you the Uly fairing/windscreen (& power outlet). If you go this route, gauges are interchangeable fitwise, you'll need a security torx bit for the ignition switch.
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/147282.html
I've kept a copies of communcations & relevant parts pics/lists from Al Lighton (American Sport Bike) documenting details to do this - email me if you want.

Thanks for the quick replies. I like the idea of the Royal Enfield screen, but it seems to be a bit too wide. If I could find a piece of lexan that had the proper curvature, maybe I could cut it down/ shape it to fit my existing small flyscreen. I need to think of something soon, my commute is starting to get miserable.

dear santa-erik, for giftmas, lightning owners wish we could get a buell bolt-on adjustable windscreen; hey, maybe a custom production run on Uly screens with the holes drilled to fit xbs fairings.

Gentleman_jon/Dagwood, don't know if you can simply bolt the Uly fairing to the lightning; but, that'd be sweet! Bare minimum 'get nutz' option includes Uly instrument cluster module body parts, use existing interchangeable lightning gauges/instruments (love to know what this costs):

FAIRING/WINDSCREEN:
15. M1601.1AKMW FLYSCREEN KIT (midnight black)
13. M0231.1AKG GROMMET, mount (4)
02. AN1005.3FSS SCREW (6)
08. CB0008.02AB WASHER (6)
12. M0230.1AKB PIN, mount (4)
15. M0600.1AKMBG WINDSCREEN, clear

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
08. L0942.1AKYBP FAIRING SUPPORT, center (graphite grey)
02. AN1005.3FSS SCREW (4)
09. M0649.01A3 GROMMET (3)
03. B0510.1Z WASHER (3)
05. D0500.1CZ JAM NUT (3)
06. L0940.1AKYBP FRONT MODULE left (graphite grey)
07. L0941.1AKYBP FRONT MODULE right (graphite grey)
01. AA0507.2CZB SCREW
04. AN1005.3FSS SCREW (4)

Looking forward to seeing what DaveS comes back with after speaking to Santa..

Project is still in process.
Seems the day job is interfering with the Buell Customizing/Brainstorming.

Ordered an Uly shield for another mounting idea...and the parts are complete to mount the screen (also one-off) to the stock XBS series fairing. If the weather cooperates we will test drive this Saturday, and yes finally post pics.

Hey John, I hope you don't mind but I took you list and put in on Price check aisle 5 on DAVES want lists. I am thinking about doing this conversion for my CityX and he should be posting a price list for the stuff tomorrow.

Keep and eye out for the new ULYCROSS !

Superbee24/Dagwood, fyi, to my knowledge the 'get nutz' Uly retrofit option has not been tried by anyone yet - it was only discussed between myself and Al at American Sport Bike (I believe he has both a Uly and Lightning in his stable). He did mention via email that:
'The front fender is the headlight adjustment bracket on the Uly, not so on the lightning, but the lower triple clamps are not the same. SO you'll need to fabricate a little bracket for that.'
Also, please consider that parts list a partial preliminary discovery on my part only (may not be complete!).. I was looking into the possibility of installing additional small gauges into the upper unused section of the Uly dashboard; and, I wanted a dash mounted power oultet. Anyway, lets wait and see what DaveS + Santa's Elves come up with.

JOhnB, If you leave the stock lightning headlamps do you need the adjustment bracket? I sure would like to try this conversion but not if it is going to involve too much custom work.

Thanks for the info.

Superbee24, to clarify, I think DaveS was only going to look into getting a batch of Uly windscreen's drilled to match our Lightning fairing's. I do not think he was looking into retrofitting the Uly fairing to a Lightning.
Anyway, if you're considering the Uly retrofit option which means you want the Uly fairing too - you might need to fit all the instrument cluster module stuff to do it cleanly. If the Uly's fairing can be mounted to a stock Lightning's cluster modules/brackets, then great, forget about all this.
The Ulysses/Lightning headlights seem to be the same; however, the upper mounting bracket (MAYBE) and lower adjustment bracket/screw locations are slightly different. So, to do the full Uly retrofit you also MIGHT NEED to get the Uly headlight mount bracket, screw/bolt assembly - I'm not absolutely sure about this!
Parts list (again, not complete and maybe not necessary!):
11. Y0347.1AKA BRACKET, headlight mount
04. AA0404.11CVB SCREW(3)
03. AA0404.11CXVB SCREW(2)
06. B0513.1Z WASHER(2)

As Al pointed out earlier, the lower adjustment bracket/screw points are different between the Uly/Lightning.
Lightning's have a lower headlight adjustment bracket attached to the lower fork clamp tree.
Ulysses's have a screw (I think) that goes thru the top Uly fender to the underside of the headlight.
I don't think this too much a concern unless you're considering fitting a Ulysses front fender; then, you'll have to fabricate something.
ulysses headlight assemby headlight lightning adjustment bracket headlight lightning mount
Hope all this helps and hope I haven't confused you further! Again, the whole headlight thing may be a non-issue ok? Private message me if you want more reference material (parts pics) no problem.

I contacted this company http://www.laminarlip.com about created a "Speed Shield" for the XB9S/XB12S/XB9SX/XB12SS

My thought was to make a shield like the one pictured on the Kawasaki Z1000 http://www.laminarlip.com/speed3.htm

Laminar said they would be happy to build one, but would need access to a motorcycle for a couple days to spec the shield. They even offered to give a free shield to the person who let them borrow their motorcycle. If you happen to be interested, Laminar is in Santa Anna, CA (unfortunately I am in Cleveland, OH).

I like that speed shield, especially on the Triumph speed triple. The price is not bad either- 79 bucks!! I would be interested in one of these if they could make them for the XBS.

Thanks DaveS, interesting to see what individual components cost for a Ulysses-to-Lightning retrofit at your appleton-badweb nice price..

Could you please include the Uly power outlet part(s) in the list?
Also, I think someone was interested in getting the Uly barricade-orange fairing (not the midnight-black) which has a different part number.

FYI, for those that are going for it, you may need to get an ignition lock removal torx wrench to relocate your ignition lock, available here:
http://www.americansportbike.com/shop/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?usr=51F4562168&rnd=2144 830&rrc=N&affl=&cip=71.136.94.36&act=&aff=&pg=prod&ref=16049&cat=&catstr=

Question for all and hopefully a non-issue, does the stock Lightning upper headlight mount fit ok inside the Ulysses instrument cluster modules -OR- do we need to modify it or get the Uly upper headlight mount (11. Y0347.1AKA BRACKET, headlight mount)? It seems to me that the Uly upper headlight bracket mount is wider and has different bolt locations for the cluster modules and horn mount. Also, assuming there will not be clearance issues with the stock headlight location and bigger Uly fairing and lower adjustment bracket mounted on the lower fork clamp tree..

To be fair, anyone wanting more info on this retrofit should contact Al Lighton at American Sport Bike who took the time to help me work out the details originally and documented assemby pics and Uly parts required..

(correction: my original list, FAIRING/WINDSCREEN: 15. M1601.1AKMW FLYSCREEN KIT (midnight black) should be numbered #14 per the parts manual pic).

The headlight bracket is
#Y0347.1AKA 21.19
The socket for the power outlet is
#Y0198.1AK 13.50
of course you'll have to wire it up as I am sure the S bikes do not come with the wires to it in their harness.

The screens are the same price, black or orange.
Orange is part # M1601.1AKMBW

I have one of the Cee Bailey screens in my office.
I am working with them to have the mounting pins included in the box so you can quickly swap windshields.
I have not mounted it up yet but it looks like a nice quality piece.
It is about 3 degrees out so I will not be test riding one for a while!
