...and I don't necessarily feel so "isolated" after reading others experiences within this thread of the same apparent problem.

Dago,

Don't you know me better than that by now? Hey man, I'm the only one that understands how fast your bike really is (was).

my knock wasn't the primary chain... it was within spec as was the oil level.

the sound was even worse today so I hauled the bike to the dealer in a truck... they think it might be that same sprocket shaft nut mentioned above. it started whining today along with the knock, definitely worse than yesterday. ugh. its in my dealers hands now...

According to AE HD-Buell, the lower-end on mine is toast. It remains to be seen whether or not it's warranteed.

Final diagnosis for my knock... loose crank nut, no damage to splines or anything else (whew) and also found a busted tooth on the outter front pulley. damn. they torqued the nut down to the new spec and have ordered a new front pulley for it.

shes down for another 3-4 days : (

Hmm, makes me wonder, I'm getting a knocking from the case. Sounds more left side then right and goes away with throttle...does this sound familiar to anyone?

Well, I have some good new and some bad news.

THE BAD:
Details are sketchy since I wasn't speaking with the mechanic himself; but from what I gathered over the phone, both pistons & cylinder heads, the crankshaft, the sproket(s)?, the oil pump, and several other random items all require replacement.

THE GOOD:
The factory is COVERING THE WHOLE PROCESS: PARTS AND LABOR! How sweet it is! I only have to pay a $100 service fee.

Thank you Michael at American Eagle H-D Buell in Corinth, Texas for all of your help! He even said it would be ready by the first of next week?!?!

Now it's time to start shopping for an extended warranty.

: )

Mesa, take it to the dealership and see what they say. But it sounds like you're experiencing the same symptoms I did. Sucks.

The cause?

It has to be from me wringing its neck every chance I get on the street and for every minute I'm on the track.

That doesn't quite add up. We've seen plenty of other XBs get thrashed on a daily basis on the street and the track while seeing more mileage than your bike has and yet those bikes didn't all need the whole top end replaced. If wringing the bike's neck caused top end failure every 10k miles we would have seen it many times before.

THE BAD: that sucks, man. ugh. but good to know they went through everything. i hope i do not hear a THING from my motor when i finally get her back. i had to ride for HOURS with my knock to get back home.

THE GOOD: that freekin' rocks !

The cause?

i'm wondering if its from wringing its neck on the track with a loose crank nut, not the daily (street or track) abuse before-hand. especially difficult to hear that issue arising if you're out focused on good, smooth lines and lap times with a noisy bike. i was on a mellow ride when mine came fully loose and didnt notice until we stopped for gas. then it was all i could hear.

But agree with Dago that over time that nut must work its way slightly loose... especially if you flog it every chance you get. certainly doesn't mean all XBs will have the issue though.

Spike, I hope for the sake of every XB12 owner out there that you are correct. But to contrast using a counter point of view, I can't help but think if I would have always kept the bike below 4000rpm the problem would have never presented itself.

You're probably right, Typeone. The XB was by no means shut down and carted off the moment I hear the noise.

Next week, I'll speak in depth with the mechanic working on the bike in an attempt to get a better idea of what precisely caused all of this destruction.

dago, thats the same thing that happended to my xb12r. the whole top end was replaced under warranty...never did find a cause, i dont ride on the track, and have yet to hit the rev limiter...what really sucked, was another 1000k break in period, which i completed 2 weeks later...good luck

It'd mean I'd be fixin' to do it for the fourth time.
Are the nines that much more sturdy than the twelves?

Oh man...I forgot about that damned break in period. When was yours manufactured, reducati? Mine's June 03.

Glitch, I've thought about your question recently as well. Although it seems at times you could be right, all I'll venture to say at the moment is that your 9 has lasted a heck of a lot longer than my 12 (and Reducati's, and Typeone's, and Mesafirebolt's, and Norcalbuell's, and ...???).

Thanks, Keith! You're not going to believe this, but she has slept all the way through the past two nights. She's been an absolute dream.

I hope that we can all get to the bottom of what's going on with some of these 1203 motors at the ~10-13k mile mark. Surely the factory must know something. Perhaps it's preventable by replacing a simple part?

my xb12 built in july of 2003 has 16,000 miles. i have run whole tanks of fuel through it above 4000 rpm. i followed a one liter ninja at 130 mph for 40 minutes once, and pretty regularly bounce off the rev limiter. engine seems pretty tough.. i hope they get yours ironed out and back on the road soon. dean
