Rd350

Firebolt Report: 1500 miles.

No brake clicking, no extrordinary fuel pump noise, no oil leaks. No melted fairings, not even a well worn ass-groove in my seat yet!

Fuel Injection rocks! I took my firebolt to Mt Evans (14,000+ feet) with nary a cough, and it was 50 degrees up there. Running at about 80mph on the highway, I've been getting 59-63 mpg! Low Fuel light comes on with 1.1 gallons left in the tank (consistantly at 1.1).

Longest single ride about 300 miles through the Rockies, comfy but a little more weight on my wrists than my Sporty. (easily cured by Gel Padded gloves). Right leg gets a bit warm on hot days (ceramic coated exhaust is in my future).
Neutral is a bit tough to find, which I attribute to an unworn tranny (my Sporty started out like that too).

Other than that, the only thing worth mentioning is a scratched muffler! Darn parking lot speed bumps!

I would recommend buying one! (maybe two to keep each other company in that cold, dark garage of yours)

Two Wheels Up?

Has anyone out there put their XB up on a jack yet? Is there a "recommended" procedure/device in the Service Manual?

I have a real-live motorcycle jack, but I don't think putting it under the muffler is a good idea. I hope I don't have to buy some HD branded jack for $350 bucks so I can change a tire or belt!

No Blake I am not running up hear says. I have two friends that bought them. And they have had the problems that I put down. I also live where it is very hot during the summer. Might have something to do with it.
I want to believe that Buell finally got it right with the Firebolt. So far the two Buells that I have owned have had problems. Even the new Blast that was suppost to be the great fix for Buell has problems. Here is a list of the problems on the Blast: spiting oil out of the airbox, airbox warped from heat, broken front motor mount, drive seal backed out and off, front rotor warped, passing signal stopped working, rocker box seals leaked, oil leaking out of the gaskets on the primary and cam sides...
So...As much as I want to love Buell and buy a firebolt I want to make sure that I don't have a third bike that sits at the dealer for repairs....
$11,000.00 is a lot for bike that you can't ride

Harleybritt,

I think what you're referring to is Zero Resistance...and they're (Buell) meaning the airbox flow itself, not the air filter, which in the stock Firebolt is still just a cheap coffee filter-style. Talking to a guy running a S2 dragger at Milan the other day, he told me that just taking the air filter out of his dealer's 'bolt increased their time down the strip by .3 seconds, so in my eyes the K&N performance filter is definitely worth $60 plus a cleaning kit.

RD350...sounds to me like you need to reroute your breather and use a catch can...be a little easier on that front brake, get those steel rocker box gaskets, and find a better mechanic! For the most part there's nothing there that can't be easily fixed by an owner.

RD the passing signal is do to water corrosion. Mine ceased to function as well. I took the assembly apart and cleaned the contacts and boom it works again

Chainsaw,

Buell is confident that the muffler is strong enough to support the bike. The service manual shows 2 spots under the muffler as jacking points. That'd be the areas where the fancy extruded brackets are.

Next question: Will the aftermarket mufflers be kosher for XB liftage - or does it not matter 'cause you're lifting the bracket? Haven't looked at one myself, so...

Thanks Sparky!

Got to go get that manual! (local dealer told me August)

Bad news, just picked up a nail in the rear tire of the XB. Looks like I rode to work with about 16 psi in that tire (what a lucky idiot). Being the cheap SOB that I am, I bought a radial tire plug kit and fixed it on the bike. I understand that isn't the best thing to do, but if it keeps holding air, I'll be happy.

RD350

The XB engines have a one way reed valve between the Crankcase and the cam cavity which helps to draw oil away from the top end quicker and apparently has reduced, if not completely eliminated, the puking out the breather/pvc valves.

Firebolt_reed_valve

The other issues you mentioned definetly give me pause if I was considering getting a 9R or a 9S.

Jose,

What do you think I have to do to put in a reed value from the XB? Or can I? Looks like taking the whole motor apart from the picture.. Would be nice to stop the oil going into the air box.

Does the new XB engines have a PCV vent on top and do they put the breather line back into the airbox like all stock Buells?

Thanks for the link to the new slip-on muffler (see above).

I wanna know when the American aftermarket is ging to get off their butt and build some exhausts for these things... I'm tired of looking at one already in production overseas, with the exchange rate and shipping it makes it difficult to justify the added expense.

Thanks for letting me vent (err... not vent with a stock muffler).

Rd

I don't know how you could do that without access to a nice machine shop and having to split the cases and taking the motor completely apart.

It might be easier to order a set of firebolt cases and plug the rear cylinder and the two rear cam holes.

The XB's do have the PCV valves, one on top of each head.

The way to keep the oil from getting into the airbox is to get that hose away from the airbox. Check the breather section of the Knowledge Vault for more than you ever want to know about this subject.

I find it AMAZING that the improvements made on the XB engine (the reed valve, the new shifting mechanism, the top end components) have not found their way to the 2003 Blasts. But they have never changed the STUPID footpeg attachment design on the Blast yet, so Buell is being consistent in not improving the bike since it was introduced (other than the new pulley due to the recall)

RD,
On your breather oil problem... Your engine should NOT be blowing oil out of the breather. Try leaving your oil level between the full and low marks; only measure when engine is hot and just shut down. Also try running a good synthetic, they seem to resist misting and vaporization better than the conventional oils. If the problem continues, your engine deserves a compression and leakdown test. You may have poor ring seal resulting in excessive blow-by.

Blake, I wouldn't have guessed that poor ring sealing would make oil come out of the air filter...how are the two related?

leaked compression (exhaust gasses) pressurize the crankcase. Oil/mist/vapor takes path of least resistance...puking onto your leg, or the hugger.
