i have been to Odie's site. Pipe looks good. Can I run the pipe with stock ecm and air cleaner. I know all bikes come lean. Will this pipe lean out my bike even more. Most aftermarket pipes do if design for performance. I am looking to add pipe, TFI, air cleaner in steps due to funds. Second question. Is it deep sounding like the drummer? Thanks for all you help.

Very deep sound (I like it alot). If you have a XB12 then you pretty much have to use the stock ECM because the OPS pipe retains the exhaust valve. I am currently setting my 12R up to run a Special OPS, Stock ECM, TFI, K&N, De-snorkled and cut or drilled airbox. I'll let you know how it goes.

you guys should check out the Stone Mountain and Special O.P.S. sponsor sections. Deadman from SM said they got better dyno results with snorkel and airbox intact. i believe Rageonthedl had better results with snorkel in too although he is running different pipe/mods. still waiting on recommended starting point for the TFI from Deadman.

i've been all over the map and still feel its off. currently at 4, 3:30, 4, 8:25. surging is down and pops almost vanished but i'm still dialing in. ive fiddled with that thing so much I cant see the tick marks anymore in some places : (

by the way, i've gone back to a stock inner airbox and will be putting the snorkel back in too as a test. need to schedule dyno time. when i first got the pipe i ran it without snorkel and a K&N, ran just fine. plugs looked fine too.

oh, and the O.P.S. sounds sick! very meaty tone, not loud at cruise. if you search there a quite a few threads on the O.P.S., I posted some sound clips somewhere too comparing against stock.

Typeone: Let me know how your dyno goes with the snorkel in. I would like to know before I yank mine and cut the air box. I would love to see those dyno's posted.

Almost all the 3%ers run the Special O.P.S. pipe. Everyone is pumped about the pipe. Sounds wicked and throaty (is that a word?). Most bang for the buck. I only run a drummer 'cause I got it second hand at a rock bottom price. You can get 1 right or left exit or dual outlet. You can also run stock ECM if you want. You won't be disappointed. If you don't like for any reason he will give your pipe back, no questions.

I love mine. You can run it stock but I recommend the race ECM

The only time the bike will run a little lean is when it's in open loop below 3500rpm.
The race ECM does a real good job of compensating no matter what pipe you run, after it goes into closed loop, after 3500rpm. I've not run a stock ECM, so I can't say if it runs lean at all.
I have the very first Special O.P.S. pipe on my bike now, and it's great. There is a better design now.
Be warned though, it's pretty loud.
I have an ad in the classifieds now for a never run Special O.P.S. pipe with a TFI, for trade for a Buell Race can if any one is interested.

My special ops pipe sounds sweet. I even had a couple of local rides on Ducks' tell me that one of the things they like best about my bike is the deep sound of the exhaust. I've had te Buell race pipe and I think the ops pipe a bit louder but with a deeper tone. We have alot of XB's in the area with different pipes and "all" sound good. For the money and "quality" its one of the best aftermarket parts I've put on my bike. Some of time when I pass one of the big "4" bikes with my under powered XB they act like it isn't stock because of the sound. I'm trying to get into some WERA racing as soon as I'm able and I'll have the ops pipe on that bike too unless I get a good deal on a buddies RC thats already set up. Its alot of fun thanks odie keep up the good work.

I have a sound clip of my special ops pipe on the link above.

I have put about 5,000 miles on my pipe and i am loving it. It does get very loud on long distance trips. so wear ear protection.

Glitch,

If I understand you correctly it's the race ECM that improves the low-end and mid-range power, more so than the pipe. I hope I'm not misunderstand your statement. I'm looking for a pipe for my City Cross that improves the low-end and mid-range "hit", more than the top end. If the race ECM is more the reason, then would any of the aftermarket pipes (D&D, Drummer, Buell race can, Special OPS) do the job?

Wambo, opposite.
The race ECM takes away from the bottom and puts it on top.
It basically gives a more aggressive spark advance, and more gas up top.
Take a look in the knowledge vault for some dyno charts, as well as the pipe's websites to get a feel for what to look for.

Low midrange - Special O.P.S. and Drummer
Midrange Upper - D&D
Upper - Buell Race Can

Hope this helps.

By the way nice, stable you have there.

Glitch,

Thanks for the clarification! It's all a lifetime learning process. Thanks for the compliment on my rides. The VStrom is the commuter (14,800miles in 15 months), the GSXR is the middle-aged crisis bike and the Buell is just for constant grins!!

No problem, glad I could help.
middle-aged crisis bike
That's a good one.
Ann thinks I'm in a constant state of mid-life crisis. She's seen A LOT of bikes come and go over the years.
This one's a keeper though.
I'm lookin' into building a Super Moto for the mid-life crisis I feel coming on for this winter

Glitch-
Doctor Jon certainly endorses your plan to cure this winter's mid-life crisis with some Super Moto Medicine. I might prescribe a dose of the new KTM 950 SuperMoto.
A fellow who lives nearby imported one directly, ( they won't be officially here till spring, so I'm told).
Anyway, it was a very amusing ride to say the least. The bicycle weighs 416 lb. without fuel, and has about 98 horse ponies, with lots of power anywhere in the range: tops out at 8000rpm.
The engine is incredibly smooth, like an Aprilia. Sort of like a Ulysses, except lighter, faster, smoother.
Of course it does look like it came from outer space, but hey, you can't have everything:-)sm

Don't tempt me!
One reason I building one, is to keep me busy, another is to keep costs down, and the other main reason is I love to tinker. A friend of mine made one out of a XR650 that is just plain ol' fun to ride.

One big plus to working with Odie, is the man goes above and beyond. We don't really know each other that well, but I consider him a true friend. Trusting, and trust worthy.

Odie is the man, his pipes are awesome!
Just a litle story about the Ops pipe.
I pulled up behind an Electra glide at a red light and there was a sporty parked on the side of the road at a coffee shop or something. He kept looking at the sporty and looking over to me trying to figure out what was making the rumble, what was funny was every time I opened the throttle he would look over at the sporty and give me this funny look like Hey! there's nobody on that bike, why is it running?
You had to be there...
in short, you will NOT be disappointed with an Ops pipe.
Ken
