Was riding yesterday and the speedo/odometer died on my XB9S. I rode home and shut off the engine. When I restarted, everything worked ok.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Yeah thats exactly what I'm going through right now. It's the speed sensor. I'm waiting for the buell tech at my Harley dealer to come from sturgis to get it replaced.

How many miles do you have on the bike?

I've heard of those things going bad. I pulled mine at 10,000 miles and gently cleaned it off. I don't know if that will prolong it's life, but since it's still working, indications are favorable.

Thanks guys. I'll have it checked at the next service unless it totally dies.

Just in case, where is the sensor located?

I've got about 2500 on the bike.

I have 8,000 on my 03 XB9R without a problem so far. But i have read that on the earlier models some of the speed sensor could be a problem

Also,from what i understand they have upgraded the part.

Milar - you might want to contact "daves" on this board to get the scoop, and insure your Dealer gets the right upgraded part, otherwise you might be going through all this again in 2,500 miles.

Also, was wondering a couple things:

1.) When you start your bike, do you wait for the red engine light to go off after turning on the ignition key and before hitting the start button?

2.) When you stop your bike to use the kill switch to stop the engine before turning off the key?

3.) How frequently have you changed your oil and did you clean off the magnetic plugs when you did?

4.) What oil do you use?

Milar: It (speedo sensor) is located right next to the two right-hand-side rear isolator bolts. It is a little black oblong thing held to the gearbox with one 3/16 allen screw directly in line with the front sprocket.

Truk: I always wait for the needles to finish sweeping before starting. I don't worry about the check engine light going off first. I hit the kill switch them shut off the key. Oil gets changed every 2500 miles with Mobil-1 15-50 full synthetic.

yes

no. Why is this important?

changed at the 1000 mile service.

Regarding my questions, I am not sure of the impact and it's connection, if any at all, to the problem...but have some thoughts and just testing to see if there is any connections

1.) If I am not mistaken, the manual says to wait for the engine light to go before attempting to start. I assume that is so the fuel injection can adequately prime the engine with gas and thus make starting the bike easier with less chance of having failed attempts and risking fouling things like plugs, etc... I do this on my bike, it starts first time everytime.

2.) If I am not mistaken the manual also says to use the kill switch first then the key so as to not put an additional draw on the electrical system

3.) Manual also says to clean both magnetic drain plugs. Should mean they remain more effective in picking up loose metal shavings

4.) Interested in actual performance of the different oils and how they might impact things

I am not saying that these items have any bearing on the speed sensor problem. I do not know, just brain storming...

Not trying to place blame or guilt trips...just thinking, which for me can be a dangerous and scary thing
