Do those of you that have been here for a while remember the girl overseas whose photo was posted here? She was riding the XB with the pink fluffy windscreen, in the dirt. I think she was jumping it, etc... Wish we had a report from her how it handled in the dirt, wear and tear. Anyone know if she had a website? I think that, in addition to the testimony here of Buell owners would easliy stand behind the durablility and reliability of Buell motorcycles.

Speedy,

My brother, neighbor and I just took a 4K mile ride on our XB's and had no trouble, I wouldn't think twice about taking this bike anywhere. With proper maintance this bike will last you a long time. The only thing that may turn you off is the dealers, they are the only problem with Buell, we do have a few great dealerships but its seems like the majority of H-D shops still do not accept the Buell brand which is very sad since it is the best most reliable bike they sell.

Give Dave S a call up in Appleton WI and go take a test ride and maybe you could even get a tour of the factory.

Dave is the man and an extremely great one to deal with, even if you do not buy a bike from him get to know him for all your parts needs.

All I can say is try to forget everything you have heard about Buell in the past because that is exactly what it the problems are the past, the XB in my opinon is the most reliable bike you can get today.

If you do decide on the Buell just remember this you will not be disapointed with your purchase unless YOU abuse it and do not properly maintain it or maintain it incorrectly.

I have 11K on my bike, my brother has 17K on his, my roommate has 12K on his, one of the guys in our local Brag group has 40 or 50K on his (his screen name is kcfirebolt) if I remember right, a few have already put over 12K on thier bikes this year, and another had 28K on his before he put a stroker motor in.

None of us have had any problems except for wore out tires and a few belts (only a problem on the 03 if mishandled and a defective 03 belt that broke after 200 miles that was replaced free of charge).

So buy your buell and treat her like a queen and she will treat you like a king.

One more thing, if anyone tells you that the bike is unreliable, just remember this. They have never owned a Buell and know nothing about them just the gossip they hear.

It is sad that so many people will not except that an american sport bike can be great because it will not do 180 in a straight line.

Do not listen to the negative comments because these bikes are awesome.

Anyone have any doubts about reliability, check out her site with the photo's and see what she puts that 12S through. Check out the tires. Think she taught Buell a thing or two about their own bike?

Computer language translation has a ways to go:

Currently i have an 01R1 I got in Jan 02 brand new and now have 49,000 on it. Also got a 02 GL1800 I got for the Mrs. and me, new in June 02 and now have 22,000 on it. And finally, got a 03 XB9R. I purchased the XB9R used in Feb 05 with 1800 miles on it and no modifications, and now six months later have 7,900.

I say all this to indicate that I ride.

The Buell has been great so far. Nothing major. Couple weeks ago did a 525 mile trip to Deals Gap. Was real pleased with the performance.

When i got the bike I ordered a Service Manual and Parts Manual thru Daves and do a lot of the work myself. Tickles me how simple this little engineering marvel really is.

Would think it important to keep that in mind, as well as no valve inspec/adj, no chain or shaft to deal with "lifetime" belt on the XB12X. Sounds to me like rubber, oil and gas and go....

I have concluded that some (not all)of the reliability issues on the XB have come from engine modifications (exhaust and associated hardware)which may not have been done totally correct. Was one of the reasons I got this one since the engine had not been modified.

Also remember that on a board like this (which is a great asset mind you)you mostly hear all the problems, not all the non-problems. Most people don't log on to advise everyone how great the bike is holding up...

Come to think of it, maybe we ought to start a thread....

PS - i think the XB12X looks to be an outstanding bike...been lusting a bit myself over it

Since Christmas of last year, when I bought my '03 9R I have dumped a small fortune into it. Thing is 99% of that has been tires. There is just too much crap on the SoCal freeways.
The bike had 2000 miles on it when I bought it. It now has 11,000. 9000 miles in 8 months and the problems are as follows:

1) 3200 miles. Broken front isolator. About $50

2) 5800 miles. Lost all the bands off exhaust can. About $20

3) 8500 miles. Broken sidestand pivot bolt. About $8

All the rest has been tires. This is, by far, the most reliable bike I have ever owned. I don't baby it either.

My 03 XB9R has over 50k miles on it and it runs like a champ. I've put 7k on it since I took over ownership in February this year. The only issue I've had is a broken belt at 44k miles.

Bpstacker -

Did you reuse the original exhaust straps when you placed the Race can your bike has in the picture on your profile.

If so, it is my understanding that those straps are only good for one application, and can brake if re-used. So perhaps the total is actually less than what you have shown since these should have been replaced at the time you put on your race can

Yeah, Truk. that was my bad. Needless to say lesson learned. I still check the straps at every fuel stop. Call it better safe than sorry.

I have 18,000 hard miles on my xb12r. Almost all those miles were on southern california mountain roads. I ride a lot in the upper rpm ranges and brake/accelerate hard between corners. My bike has been very reliable. Most of my problems/hassles have been related to my Jardine exhaust (which they have resolved to some degree). The only other problems were the neutral sensor backed out at about 7,000 miles and caused an oil leak. The clutch cable guide broke (because I had bent it to clear a steering damper)-BTW the cost was $2.87. The clutch cable broke at 14,000 miles ($23.00 and no I never lubed it). And I had the belt replaced pro-actively under warranty at about 14,500 due to some cracking of the teeth. The belt wear could be due to numerous wheelies and running on the street like it's an International Raceway-which of course I would vigorously deny ; )

The new belt should effectively eliminate any failures due to hard use and abuse and the new clutch spring which reduces force by 20 percent (it feels like more), will probably eliminate clutch cable failures for the most part.

So there you have it. If my bike had been a 2006 model I would predict no failures because of the above improvements.

I should point out that the clutch cable was replaced under warranty. I just posted the price to show that if I had to pay for it, the price was very reasonable. Something often overlooked by the Rice Rocket guys is that while Japanese bikes are generally very reliable, parts prices are often outrageously priced. Even if a Japanese bike never breaks, the replacement price for body work and other items broken in a fall (and there are lots of parts to break on those bikes) is going to cost you and arm and a leg.
