My bike seems to have a stutter or stumbles around 3k RPM in any gear, any ideas as to why this might be.

Coyote, I have the same issue. When I first got the bike (used) I tried explaining it to someone almost like "missing". If I hang out right around 3k for more than a few seconds its like its not getting fuel or spark for a number of cycles. It keeps doing it till I move faster and doesn't do it when I motor right past the 3k point . Makes for a rough ride around town when the girl comes along.

That's my guess also. If yo want as few mods as possible, take the snorkel out and try that. If that doesn't do it for you drill, or cut your air box. This won't get rid of it, but will make it less noticeable.

The snorkle is already out so maybe I'll look into cutting air box.

yes all three of my ECM s run real crappy around 3000 rpm. too bad because that is right at 62 miles per hour in top, and 50 mph in 4th. very hard to maintain a legal speed limit with my bike. real smooth around 2400- 2700, and of course just great over 3400 rpm. Bike loves to run over 4000, will do it all day long, just not legal around here.

Don't the XB12s have a flapper type valve in the exhaust system similar to Yamaha EXUP valves.

Could it be that this is hanging up? My R1 has one and if it isn't functioning properly can give some running problems.
