I own a 2004 Xb12r with a factory installed race kit and have about 6000 miles on it. About 6 months ago I have had problems with the bike keeping a steady idle and the occasional misfire. Sometimes the bike will even stall. The problem occurs when the bike is either hot or cold but it has to sit for about an hour to act up. What happens, specifically, is it will have a rough idle that will fluctuate from 1100 to 600 rpms. When the idle drops down around 600 rpm the bike will stall or stay running and misfire until I just get on the bike and ride it till the problem goes away. The other problem I have with the bike is really intermittent and may have nothing to do with the first problem. What will happen is the bike will just completely drop a cyl at any time and I will lose all power(It also sounds just like a blast, ha ha). The bike is still covered under the factor warranty, and has been in and out of the dealer for about three months. In fact it is in the shop right now. So far they have replaced a spark plug wire and the idle speed adjustment cable that apparently had been laying on the cyl head and had burnt a hole though it. After the dealer replaced these parts I have not had a problem with the bike stalling, but i still have issues with the bike having a rough idle and misfiring. Anybody out there with the same/similar problems? If so,what did you or your servicing dealer do to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I'm having the same problem right now. The dealer reset the tps twice. It's going back in to the shop next week. My bike is also fouling the spark plugs and has some pre ignition problems. As soon as I find out the problem I'll post it.

This was posted by "Izzinya" who is an HD Tech, on another thread,

"XB12 Driveability Diagnostics

(from the buell network)

Purpose
The XB12R/S Initial Care Program has identified some driveability
concerns on a small population of motorcycles during
the PDI. The symptom most often reported has been a stumble
off idle and/or poor idle characteristics. To properly
address these concerns and to ensure that our customers
are delivered the most satisfying product, we have developed
the following procedure to aid the technician in resolving
these complaints.
Motorcycles Affected
2004 XB12R/S motorcycles that exhibit driveability concerns
after the PDI test ride outlined in the PDI manual."

So I am guessing it there is some kind of procedure or fix out there. At the very least, Buell is aware of this problem. Shane, ( Izzinya ) any comment?

excuse my newbieness, but PDI?!? - I did a cursory search here for it but still am not sure.

My '04 12R occasionally has problems "waking up and getting going" in the morning - I thought maybe just more coffee would do it

or, really, that this was normal after sitting a while - once warmed up and ridden it seems to be ok. I ride it mostly every day to work, so it isn't like it just sits around.

Any more help would be great - or, in my case, is this just normal warm-up issues? I've made one idle adjustment after it spent a lot of time stumbling around at idle at all times of riding, but now it is back and fluctuates from around 500 (or cuts off) and 1100 RPM.
Thanks in advance.

I'm having the same issues, guessing it has to do with the race ECM. Besides idling problems and start up until it is warm, mine also hangs up around 2000 rpm when it gets warmed up. Also, even though it is warm, when I stop and shut it off for awhile and then start it up again it starts all over again, as if it was cold. Other than hanging up, it runs great warm, until I shut it off and try to restart it.

sounds to me like an engine temp sensor

that would explane the eratic idle

the missfire

and the coughing

pdi is dealer speak for setting the bike up for sale

pre delivery inspection

if the tech/dealership is good

that should be fixed before it leaves the shop

ill have to look at the "recomended"

fix but i believe its a tps zero and af value reset

ill look tomorrow

Izzinya

ps the temp sensor in most cases WILL NOT throw a code

Here are some updates. Sorry it took so long but i just got the bike back last week. I am told that these parts got replaced:
-Throttle position sensor
-both fuel injectors
-oxygen sensor

The bad part, I am still having problems with the bike. It does not stall any more, but still runs rough, also the the bike is pinging now
I am going to take the bike back into the dealer next week if i hear anything i will post

A couple of days ago i inspected the spark plugs and the frt. is fouled but the back plug has a reddish brown color on the porcelain around the electrode.

Also, just putting some thoughts together and reading some of the posts, I am curious if the bike may have a vacuum leak. that would explain the pinging and may contribute to a rough idle. further more, it may explain why it only does it on start up when the oxygen sensor is not warm enough to start switching, and the ECM cannot compensate for the un-metered air.

Just an idea, any thoughts?

ps. this site is awesome, I love checking out all the pics of customized buells and reading all the testimonials. especially the ones about the "speed parts"
