Had a head shake on my 03XB9R which occurred at 60 mph while decelerating and my hands of the bars. It has done this ever since I purchased it used with 1800 miles on it. It now has 4700 miles. Immediately after I got it I re-torqued the head bearings to remove a front end chatter, but the head shake remained. Two days ago I changed the front tire from OEM Dunlop to Michelin Pilot Sport. Not a big fan of this tire, but had it left over from another bike that didn't do well with this tire at all. Though the tire specs are rated the same, it appeared the tire height (17) was actually a bit taller than than Dunlop. I noticed that the head shake went away with the new tire. My guess is that the slight taller profile was just enough to change rake and trail dynamics and do away with he head shake. It is also possible, and perhaps more probable, that the wheel was never balanced correctly from the factory,or got out of balance. I like the handling of the new tire, though probably anything would have been better than what was left of the Dunlop. FYI - It is mismatched with a Dunlop 205 rear that I had put on not to long ago. But I had the front already, so what the heck, figured I would give it a go.... Just thought I would pass this along to see if anyone else had a similar experience with a change of front tire type that did away with Head shake. Have to wait and see how it does with time and wear. |

Truk, I had a similar experience. After retorquing the head bearings twice, still had head shake while slowing from 60 mph or so. When I put new tires on (Pirelli Diablos), head shake disappeared completely. I attributed this to the stock front Dunlop being cupped! |

I've got a 208 on mine and get the same head shake, I'll be looking to replace this with the michelin pilot sport soon. Thanks for the info. |

Honu, Did you have a front end chatter as well as head shake or just head shake. I had both. Torqueing the Head bearings cleared the chatter problem but the head shake at 60 mph with no hands remained. |

I have the same thing, I thought the bearings were starting to loosen up so I went to tighten them and everything was ok. Checked all other parts, found one of the bolts on the front rotor was a little loose but that was all. the tires have 1800 miles on the stock 207's so I might look into a new set. theres a sport bike shop here by me that has the diablo corsa's for $206.00 a pair. |
