Since I am bikeless right now, I got my thrills this past weekend by taking out a couple of XB9Ss. I rode a new 05 on Friday and a leftover 03 on Saturday. I loved both! Here is my problem. Do I go new or leftover?

I hate the look of the CityX (the color, handguards, headlight grille). I want to stick with the 9 though, and it looks like that is all there is for 05. I did however like the seat on the 05 much better than the 03. Also, it sounds like the belt drive is improved on the 05.

How easy is it to replace or paint the colored pieces? Is the seat / belt enough to make the 05 worth a bit extra? Is there anything else improved on the 05 vs the 03?

Also, will I get a factory warranty if I buy a leftover 03?

I have loved the look of these bikes since they came out, but after riding them, I am SOLD! Now I just have to convince my wife we can afford one.

I bought a used 2003. Changing all of the plastic out is a breeze. Many of the guys on the site are still running their original belt setup from the 2003. Cost of switching over to the 2004+ system is less than $400 for the entire setup. Seatwise, you can always upgrade to a Corbin or other. You don't mention what the price difference is on the two bikes.

I went through that just before xmas and bought the leftover.

Dealer gave me a 2 year warranty (which covers the belt) and I saved over 2k.

There are not a lot of changes between these years.

I got a leftover 2003, and have been very happy with it with one or two small exceptions. The value was unbeatable. Here are a few observations on your concerns.
1. The belt will normally last until the first rear tire change at about 2500 miles. At that point, you merely install the revised 2003 belt and you should be good to go for 10,000 miles or so.Belt cost $160. The cost to upgrade to the 2004 belt is a lot higher as you would need to not only replace the belt, but the sprockets, belt guard, and a few other parts. Many of our members prefer to switch to a Michelin, Pirelli or Metzler sport tire at this time. Actually, I recommend switching over at the 1000 mile service, because the other tires are so much better.
2. The color pieces are very easy to replace. Takes about an hour or so. If you don't like the color you get, you can often find a different color set on eBay, then sell your old ones. Painting requires a special technique because the plastic is flexible. Some members have dyed the plastic successfully.
3. The 05 seat fits right on, probably costs about $250, just guessing.
4. You will get a one year warranty on a 2003 from the date of purchase.
5. You can see that the cost of the belt and the seat are much less than a new model.
6. There are a few other changes, like larger diameter front fork,
but for my money, the leftovers are the best buy around. And perhaps a little easier to sell the idea to the missus. Your mileage may vary.
Many members, myself included, enjoy working with Dave Steuve of Appleton HD, ( known here as daves), to get the parts they need for their bike. Another sponsor, American Sport Bike also has lots of Buell specific aftermarket parts.
Either way you go, you will have a ton of fun.

I am thinking about putting on the black air box and black fly screen on my City X. How much do those costs and do they come with the "Buell" letters and decals?

I'm not too into the X-bodywork either, plus it's just too darn tall. I almost dumped the one at the dealer trying to balance it.

I could have had me a brand new 05'X for quite a bit less than I paid for my 03' 9S.

But even knowing what I know now, I would still buy the 9S. I am extremely happy with it.....no exceptions!

Actually I would want to keep both of them. You know, so I can switch them out depending on what mood I am in.

ther newer year bike has larger front forks i believe, this could be a benifit

I got a leftover.I am really happy.
I guess it all depends on the price differential. I am sure a 2005 has to have a higher used market price than a 2003 even with the same miles ( I am not counting the mechanical improvements).

I guess for around 2.000 dollars difference is better the 03...that is what I did.
